Every so often there is a transaction between 2 teams where one GM fleeces the other for seemingly a salary dump, roster flexibility, or just a favor to the player to get them more playing time. For me, this situation is exemplified perfectly in the deal that sent Maurice Harkless to the Portland Trail Blazers via Orlando last year for a heavily protected 2nd round pick that is unlikely to even be conveyed.

Straight up, that was a steal for Portland. Harkless started a number of Portland’s games last season in the 2nd half & in the playoffs, and has proven to be a very effective player for Terry Stots as a 3/4 combo in 23-28mpg. His 3pt shot was sketchy last year, but continually improved as the season progressed. Last night against the Jazz Harkless put his range on full display.. canning three 3’s in just 24 minutes of action, while also providing some nice weak-side and man to man defense.

I’m cringing at this deal since Orlando invested $15million dollars (1yr deal though) this offseason in Jeff Green, who is somewhat similar with less upside. Harkless could have potentially provided better athleticism, range, and defensive versatility for a coach in Frank Vogel that loves defensive length. His timetable for his prime mirrors Orlando’s really well too.. since he’s just in his early 20’s. Harkless is listed at 6’9 w/ a 7’2 wingspan & great agility.

Any other examples come to mind where a franchise just threw away a young talent for nothing & the other team immediately saw a return?

Lakers bought Jordan clarkson from the Wizards for 1 million$.

On the flip side, lakers released Kent bazemore who is now doing good things in Atlanta.

Not my team, but Philadelphia just sort of threw Nikola vucevic into the deal to get Andrew bynum. People remember them giving up igoudala but Vucevic was almost an afterthought at the time.

    • Austin Rivers has proven to be pretty serviceable
    • the Brandon Jennings/Knight trade could’ve been done withouth Khris Middleton
    • Eric Bledsoe for Jared Dudley was terrible
    • Blazers traded 2 2nd round picks to Cleveland in order to draft Allan Crabbe
    • The Raptors got Norman Powell + a protected ’17 1st for Greivis Vasquez

The Eric Bledsoe trade also included j.j redick and i would say that trade tuurned out well in the clippers favour in fact as bledsoe hasnt had a full healthy season while j.j has been amazing playing off of cp3 and blake

Spurs and Raptors both offered him a contract but he declined/didn’t want to be a 3rd string guard.

Traded Isaiah Thomas to Boston for Marcus Thornton and the Cavs 2016 first round draft pick. That trade will haunt me until the day that I die !

Detroit traded Arron Afflalo to Denver for the right to draft the immortal Vernon Macklin. Vernon freaking Macklin…  One of Dumars’ worst moves (along with giving Middleton to the Bucks for the honour of acquiring Brandon Jennings). I guess that’s two.

I guess my choices were trades that kept giving rather than straight players for players as such…

Clippers:Baron Davies and a pick for Mo williams. Why is this deal a bad move the pick would turn out to be Kyrie Irving…Imagine CP3 mentoring Kyrie he might have been able to a more well rounded PG..

OKC:James harden trade the only thing that salvaged it is Steven Adams otherwise they got nothing for him(The MVP candidate version of James that is)

Brooklyn: Gerrald wallace for Memhet okafor,Shawne williams and a pick which turned into Damian Lillard…. That is pretty up there also..

All of the Nets Celtics trades for K.G and Paul pierce…So Many picks its not funny if Boston does this right things will look really bad pretty quickly…Still should have taken Dunn over Brown though.

Lakers fleecing the hornets for Kobe though has to be  righ near the top…

The Victor oladipo+ sabonis for Ibaka move I will wait until the season before I call this a win though…

Id have to bring up the time Bryan Colangelo passed up buying a early 2nd round pick to acquire DeAndre Jordan.  I think the asking price was $1 mil and he basically laughed at the idea of drafting this unpolished kid on the NBA TV  behind the scenes draft edition.

You remember too well my friend. It was two second round picks and $1 mill. A high price for a 2nd round pick but I would’ve done it without hesitation as I was pretty high on DeAndre as he reminded me of a young Dwight Howard before all those injuries.

Instead of looking at mistakes my team made, I’m gonna look on a steal they got. Raptors traded Delfino and Ukic for Amir and Weems. Amir was under utilized until then and then became the starter for Toronto and the backbone of the team. Plus, Sonny Weems had some nice years with the Raps.

I remember the Clippers gave away Z-Bo to Memphis in a salary dump with him coming off a 20-10 year.

If I remember right, it was for Quentin Richardson the summer he got traded like 5 times in a 2 month span

Shelvin Mack for a second round pick proved to be a pretty good steal for the Jazz. Nobody was expecting Mack to do what he did in Utah though. His statline was 12/4/5 and brought some much needed experience to Utah.
