In 2013 Bill Simmons let out a big "WOOOAHH!" when Anthony Bennett was selected first overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Three years later Bennett is essentially out of the NBA playing for the Toronto Raptors NBADL team. This 2013 draft class was considered fairly weak. At one point Alex Len and Nerlens Noel were considered to be the top pick by the Cavaliers.

Three years later the 76er’s have already spoiled who the first pick in this years draft will be, Ben Simmons. This too is considered a weaker draft, but only in depth.

I can’t help but think that this year we will see another "WOOOAHH!" moment early in the draft/lottery. The biggest wildcard to me is the Phoenix Suns with two lottery picks with the #4 and the #13. This morning we got news that they are positioning themselves to try to land Gordon Hayward. But, if they keep their picks I could defintely see them beefing up their questionable front line with the often injuried Alex Len, an aging Tyson Chandler, and Jon Leuer.

I would love a surprise pick at #13 Thon Maker.

I have Sacramento as my surprise pick team, but have them taking Baldwin, not Murray.

but Toronto at 9 is a likely spot to hear it.  From Rafael Araujo to Bruno Caboclo – that team has a long history of making you say – what the …. Who ?

I thought of them too because he has played close to their the past couple years of high school and he would fair well in relief of JV

I think Cat Barber is no doubt a first rounder. I had him at 20 until the pacers got Teague. Looking at Clippers (25), Phoenix (28), and San Antonio (29). He actually brings a lot of the same things Tony Parker brings (quickness, effecient use of the three pointer, can get to his spot whenever he likes) so I think Pop would love him.

Other surprise picks: I have Malcolm Brogdon going 22 to Charlotte. Troy Williams going to the Spurs at 29. Wayne Selden going in the low 30’s. Probabaly a couple others that I don’t realize are surprises.

The woah moment may come as early as the second or third pick. I remember when Tristan Thompson was drafted 4th it was a shock because he was being mocked at the end of the lottery and there weren’t any reports of his stock rising. All it takes is for one of the top two picks to not go the way we expect them too or for the Celtics or Suns to pick someone we don’t expect them to. Deyonta Davis reminds me a lot of Thompson.

thats a good point, and if Davis has half the motor of Thompson he is worth it 5-10 range.I would’nt tkae him above Chriss if I had the option

None of the guards make any sense whatsoever. Bender’s workout with them was apparently terrible. Do they take Chriss, or go off the board complete.

This is why I don’t understand Ainge playing hardball with Colangelo. Just take Noel for No. 3 and be happy, you’re not getting anyone better there.

Are you sure Noel is available for just the 3rd pick?

Colangelo has been (stupidly) running his mouth for months about how we are looking to trade Noel or Okafor and the rumor has always been one of them for No. 3. I also don’t know what else they could give us. Bradley is too much, so that won’t happen. It doesn’t make sense to give us the pick in the 20s, since we have two already.

Noel is a nice player, but really nothing special. He really hasn’t improved at all since coming out of Kentucky. He hasn’t put on weight. I’m more than happy to unclog the big jam and trade him for No. 3.

Other Sixers fans think he is like a top 5 player in the NBA or something. It’s amazing.

Suns with the  double WHOA HM, Maker at 13th, and Venky Jois at 28th.

In reality they’ll take Chriss at 4th, it’s quite the whoa, kid wasn’t on any mock in late march…

We shouldn’t be that surprised, many players have a  legit 10 to 20 spots range, from late lotto to early 2nd rounders depending on who’s drafting, an early 20’s could very well end late 30’s.

    + 4 teams have 40% of the 1st rounders(Celts-Suns-Sixers and nuggets)…10 teams without a 1st rounder.

Venky is a real possibility to get drafted.

The NBA champs of the last 4 or 5 years all had Aussie role players that put up huge numbers at small schools. Scouts are noticing…especially because they are all on bargain contracts.

Hes been working out in front of a lot of teams so definitely dont snooze on Venky. Maybe not only the Suns, but possibly the Raptors or Kings too.

He can really ball, play defense and is athletic. Perfect on a cheap rookie deal.

Plus he can double up as a team doctor.
