OllstarParticipantUthoff averaged 2.6 BPG this past season for Iowa. At first glance people will think he must be a good defender. If you dig a little deeper you will see a lot of these blocks come when his opponent blows by him off the dribble. Uthoff may not be the most gifted athlete but natural ability only takes you so far. In a league full of the best athletes in the world often times it is effort that is the deciding factor on who wins and who loses.
Uthoff needs to improve his initial effort on defensive possesions but his experience chasing defenders from the perimeter should fit nicely in todays NBA.
I like Uthoff and think he can become a serviceable pro but not everyone will agree with that opinion. Uthoff offensively is very gifted. He can shoot to the NBA 3 and drive like an NBA SF. Ironically, I think that it will be his defense that keeps him in the league.
Would be interested to hear what others think about Uthoff in terms of strengths and weaknesses and where he might get drafted.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantLate second rounder at best. Hes thin, not a great ball-handler and struggles to beat defenders off the dribble. His shot-blocking will not translate to the next level and he doesn’t have great lateral quickness. NBA teams are much more interested in wing players that can keep their man in front of them initially than guys who can block shots once they get beat. Unless he significantly improves his ability to make plays off the dribble and gets stronger he will basically be relegated to being a spot up shooter at the next level, and I don’t think he shoots it well enough to carve out a role in that capacity.

OllstarParticipantI agree with a lot of that. I think his athleticism is a little underrated, him getting blown by on the perimeter was less his lack of lateral quickness and more about his laziness before his man got the ball. And his shooting IS good enough to be a stretch 4 in the league. A lot of his shots in college were beyond the NBA 3 point line and he still shot 38%, that’s not elite but good enough.

nill650Participantsome his lack of speed will hurt him in the league but I don’t believe it is as bad as commonly reported. one of the best perimiter defensive players in college basketball will figure out a way to at least break the rotation in a smallball lineup in a couple seasons. mid-late 2nd rounder…but could also be one of those late first sleepers.
Not all of his skillset will translate if he asked to play the 4 in a traditional line up though so unless a team wanting to have options going small really likes him he could fall to late 2nd . since there alot of bigs in this draft with better length and speed, despite not many having the 2 -way skill set of Uthoff.
I think he has the ability to be a Roberson type player in the league and he has better offensive skills than Andre. Take that with a grain of shake

MopgrassParticipantUthoff- outstanding footwork, very ambidextrous. Will switch hands and directions multiple times seemlessly. Super mobile. Way under weight, but has long arms, and wide shoulders. Could eventually add a lot of muscle to his frame as a PF. Rumored to also play SF in the NBA. No way. Known as a defender: led the nation in blocked jumpers (64) and blocked 3’s (16). Good looking shot and his early season percentages reflect that, but his overall stats fell off in the second half of the season.
Frankly, he’s one of the most versatile PF’s in the draft and the only reason I think he might miss the 1st round is because PF is the most abundant position in the draft.
