Hype MachineFirst time I heard of Simmons was at the U17 FIBA World Championships in 2012. He was a nice player but definitely not a future lottery pick at the time. Dante Exum was the star of the team…although Simmons was one of the youngest guys on the squad and had a couple of nice games.
When he came to America he grew another couple inches which put him in that 6’10" range. Thats also when he started really impressing at camps etc.
His Sophomore year he really made himself known, and then when he was totally dominant with D’Angelo Russell as a Junior and naturally he became the obvious #1 pick.
So hes really been in contention for the #1 pick of the 2016 draft for over 3 years now.

BasterdInABasketParticipantHe was a head taller than everybody else on the court and dunking every play. And look at that jumper! Didn’t miss one that whole video so must not be broken! Lol

Butter13ParticipantI’m not sure what’s so surprising. He’s a foot taller than everyone else his age, can handle the ball, has good quickness and speed, and can attack the basket at will.
Not all the much of a shock that a guy with those skills, who also grew to 6’9/6’10, ended up being the top pick in the NBA Draft.
