ChrispyParticipantOk, we are all familiar with the ‘Is he a HOF player or not’ argument. Yao Ming being the current example. That got me thinking, ‘What about is he a superstar?’ as an argument. These days, suppossed superstars are forced down our throats by advertising, endorsements and other interested parties. That said, here are a few guys I can think of who have, depending on your view, superstar attached to their respective names. Let me know what you think about each and why. Include whether or not they are or may become one in the future. I am curious to see if the money put into the branding of player has any effect, market etc. Feel free to be bold, be brash, or not give a sh!t. Just curious!
John Wall… Superstar or no?
Kyrie Irving…Superstar or no?
Boogie Cousins…Superstar or no?
Klay Thompson…Superstar or no?
anyone else?

The Scare Crow RisesParticipantAsk your mother or father, sister or brother, son or daughter, who any of those guys are…
If they say yes and can describe something about them than yes that guy is star or superstar if you will…
I would say those guys you mentioned are NBA Superstars, but the average person doesn’t know who they are, making them a non Superstar to the general public…
Dont know if that makes any sense, buy hey, i tried to explain how most people I know measure these sorts of things…
Sorta like comics and games, everybody and their mom knows Batman and Super Mario, making them Superstars of a different from of Entertainment, show a picture of an NBA player to your wife and ask for their name, if she knows who he is, you may have married a "THOT"…

Hype MachineI’d say half the All-Star team is "Superstars", and the other half are "Stars".
Then you’ve got "Megastar" category, and that can really only be 1 or 2 guys at a time. Jordan, Kobe, Delly, Lebron etc.

Hype MachineSeriously, if anyone wants to read the best article all year…check this one out.
Its funnier than Bill Simmons and more analytical than Zach Lowe.
Its by Warren Yiu and is titled "Does Delly Deserve all that hate". Google it.
Long read but full of absolute gold.

CU.LIONSParticipantthe word Super Stars are thrown out there too much IMO. Not everyone in the HOF is a SS. Many were just stars.
On that note J Wall, Kyrie, K Thompson, D Cousins all have Super star potential (because they are still young) But are still only stars. a TRUE Super Star can carry a team. None of those players can at his current time.

juves4783Participantif boogie wasn’t such a head case, i’d put him in the realm of super star. you can’t deny he’s probably the best center in the league by a large margin. i think the gm has made questionable moves that has prevented cousins from having a good supporting cast and being more of a contender. they’ve struck out on the draft with fredette, stauskas and mclemore and then just as they recovered by moving that horrible jason thompson contract, they add belinelli for $6M/year and kostas for $7M/year for 3+ years. these are for bench players…

NBAjunkie81ParticipantGlobal Level……. SO by definition there can Only be a handful in each Era……. It’s a player who captures the imagination of fans…… A person who "moves the needle" w/ the Average sports fan & brings those fans to the sport by the Million…… & they Win NBA Championships or come Very close…….. but it’s player who is at his peek & relevant in Every way……
So Jordan, Bird, Magic, Wilt, Russell, Hakeem & Shaq are examples of retired Superstars….. Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Allen Iverson…… are a few other examples of Huge Stars but just a bit below the Very Top "Super" Stars like Jordan & Kobe…….
……. Current players in that category would be: Kobe, Tim Duncan & Dwayne Wade who are older but still active…….. Next, would be Lebron, Durant & Steph Curry…… Kawhi Leonard is Very close….. It would appear the Unibrow is on that track but we’ll see…..
By definition there can only be 2 or 3 guys at that level where their fame & the team reaches the very highest levels of the sport…….
