valentine10x champions of the Prestigious Albert Schweizer U18 Basketball Tournament – The United States, have been eliminated at the hands of Greece without a medal.
As there is no FIBA sanctioned U18 World Championship, the biannual event is considered the biggest U18 event on the calendar.
This represents a disappointing tournament considering the quality of the US team, winning only 1 from 4 games.
France, Serbia, Italy, Germany and Australia all remain in the hunt to win the tournament.
Thoughts?

he_gets_bucketsParticipantThe US team is hardly littered with NBA talent.. from what I can see there isn’t a single top 25 recruit on the team.

hoopscopParticipantThere is not a single top 300 player on this squad. Actually it is not an USA selection because it is a private thing with no ties to USA Basketball whatsoever. It is a tournament that absolutely has no rationale to be called unofficial World Championships. Watch the real Worlds, this year the U17 in Spain or the euro U18 this year.

European BasketballerParticipantRegardless of what USA basketball thinks, this tournament was always considered the Under-18 world championship.
The only reason FIBA does not connect with it, is because they cannot afford to pay for 4 world youth tournaments.
So Turkish federation pays for the Under-16, FIBA pays for the Under-17, German federation pays for the Under-18, and FIBA pays for the Under-19.
And the only reason USA does not care about this tournament is because they don’t count it in the FIBA rankings. Otherwise, USA would be there with everything they had.
Also, this is THE most heavily scouted tournament of all by NBA scouts. And for about 25 years or so, USA considered this the most important of all youth FIBA tournaments (at that time it was counted in rankings – so imagine that).
So stop pretending like this is a meaningless tournament. It is a hugely important tournament for every country, except USA, which just ignores it because they can get away with doing so, because losing won’t affect their FIBA rankings.
