ExumInfernoParticipantHarrell attacked a referee in the D-League. He seemed like a good pick by the Rockets but now it looks like he is a bust due to his actions.
Houston should waive him.

Winning_TimeParticipantI’m not saying he should have pushed the ref, but players historically don’t get punished as much as they should. This is just sort of something I would readily accept an apology for idk, if I was the ref I think I could talk it out with him…
That being said, Houston should probabaly waive him (to have this viewed as nontolerable behavior), that’s probably appropriate punishment on top of the suspension. But I don’t plan on holding this against him in the future and I bet a lot of organizations won’t either

Hype MachineI love Exum Infernos posts….he never holds any punches or keeps his opinion in check because he’s afraid it might offend someone.
To be honest….he pushed him on his ass pretty hard. I’ve not really seen anything like that in Basketball. I’d say 1 full season minimum…and if the Referee sustained any injuries, whether physical or psychological, I’d make it 2.

OhCanada-ParticipantSeriously guys? Come on! I thought he assaulted the ref. The game ended and the opposing player sqaured up talked some and shoved Harrell first. Harrell gathered himself and as soon as he gathered himself the referee draped him up so he instinctively pushed him. It was a reaction not an assault or decision a real time reaction. Obviously an example has to be made that referees cannot be shoved like this or else there will be consequences but to ban a player, waive a player or suspend him for a year or two for a reaction after being shoved first is ridiculous.
Remember if Harrell shoves a D-League player with that force he moves three feet and shoves back a referee falls on his arse and fly’s 8 feet lol. Harrell is a high character guy he doesn’t go around assaulting refs. Suspend him for the remainder of the season and act like it never happened. It’s a contact sport the refs get paid.

juves4783Participantwell said. calling that an assault is ridiculous. if harrell wanted to assault that ref, the ref would be in the hospital. just lost control of his emotions and the ref was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

The Scare Crow RisesParticipantClearly not the end of the world for Harrell but this could delay his debut in the NBA, he wasn’t getting called up this year anyway so I dont see the big deal…
I would be surprised if the rest of the NBA world even cares by next week…

Mr. HookShotParticipantAfter looking at the video this sounds a lot worse than it actually is. Who is the guy who pushed him in the first place?

warson24"Harrell attacked a referee"???? You should first watch the video… Harrell attecked D-leaguer Cooke Jr. (also not praiseworthy), the referee was just the first person between the two guys. Harrell not attacked the referee, he shoved him for sure, but my grandmother could be there, and Harrell would’ve been shoved her, that’s a big difference. Harrell not that type of a person, he should be punished and should have some conversations ahead of him. But better not to twist things like that.
and Rockets should waive him? why? He didn’t played box match with fans like Artest/Jermaine nor stifled his coach like Spree. and oops they also didn’t got waived. That was a mistake, his only by the time, so he deserves another chance.0 - Posted on: Tue, 03/29/2016 - 11:24pm #1050367

CynthiaParticipantThe action classifies as physical assault, therefore it is a criminal activity. I’m not saying he should necessarily receive legal punishment (unless the ref was injured) but he should definitely receive a hefty punishment from the league.
The ref was obviously a victim of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, however that’s not how the law works. If Harrell did this in front of Police outside of a basketball court he would now be in jail, simple as that.
I’m not sure he should be banned for several years as the OP suggested, but definitely more than only a 5 game suspension. I’d suggest at least a half year suspension, starting with the rest of this year and then half of next year.

CynthiaParticipantI didn’t say he should be arrested, just giving an example that it should warrant more than just a 5 game suspension, it isn’t a minor offense.

OhCanada-ParticipantBut what you forgot is Basketball is literally a physical sport. Physical altercations are going to happen when grown men compete in a physical sport. Referees are going to be responsible for breaking up the situation and should understand there is a risk associated. This was not an assault because they were on a court and not inner city streets. Now if he walked up to the referee and shoved him after a bad call it would warrant a hefty suspension and could warrant an assault depending on the extents of the injuries and or nature of the assault. In this situation it’s water under the bridge faults were made men are men so move on. I’m sure the ref and him have already spoken and have an understanding of what happened.

Magic JordanParticipantCircumstances don’t matter. How is shoving him after a bad call or shoving him on "accident" any different? They aren’t. With this logic people would walk around all the time punching others in the face and throwing up a defense that, "hey this guy was in my way. I was really just punching air". Completely illogical.

Knicks44Participanteveryone is so sensitive about stuff now. He should get a few games suspension but everyone just calls everything an assault and wants to take everything to the court. I hate how things are changing. It was just an emotional reaction, he wasn’t trying to hurt the ref, he was just responding to being pushed by another player. People are becoming so soft

Memphis MadnessParticipantWhat more punishment does he need?
The guy is in the D LEAGUE!
Alcatraz would be a step up.
