They usually give rhe ROY based on stats. Right now Karl Towns is the obvious leader averaging 16 and 10 with great efficiency.

I can see Jahlil making a push for it in the second half of the season. He’s been a lot more efficient but hasn’t been rebounding well.

I don’t see Porzingis winning it, he may be the best prospect of them all (though to me Towns is better) and the most popular player, but 14 & 8 on 42.5% from the field rarely gets you the award. There is basically no argument for giving the award to him over Towns. Sure he plays on a better team, but that should help his efficiency and it hasn’t.

Towns. Because he’s by far the best rookie.

I dont see why you even made this post. There are only like, 2 peopl that could even come close to it right now, unless Okafor make a huge push in the last half of the season. It will come down to Porzingis, or Towns, and right now, Towns is NOT playing like a rookie. He is playing like he has had experience in this league for a long time now. So I personally think that its not even that hard of a contest.

    Towns will win

Oh boy… this is gonna be fun having you around.

It’s almost always a 2 man race. That’s why we have these forums here, to talk about who we think will win and why

Towns is playing GREAT ball right now and so is Porzingis. Okafor is also playing on another level. Then we also have guys heating up right now like Mudiay and Russel will likely start getting more playing time. Heck, even Lyles is starting to play better, though he likely won’t be ROY. What my point is is that the race is always gonna be close near the end. You could make an argument for a lot of rookies. That’s the reason he made this. It’s always close unless there are tons of injuries like last year when Wiggins was basically the only one eligible to win ROY.

On to my choice. I’d say Towns is the ROY right now, but Porzingis definitely could win it, as well as Okafor. Those are the top 3 in my opinion.

I don’t think that anything could change the fact that Towns will win. I think that if you think that Porzingis could win it, then you are a Knicks fan. Cuz they are the only kind of people that will vote for him. everybody knows that Towns is the better rookie, and it will stay that way until the end of the season at least…  The only way that he doesnt win it. is if he gets injured.

I’m not trying to offend you in any way, but it’s not as one sided as you think. There’s a huge New York fanbase so that alone could win it for Porzingis. Anyways, the whole ROY race isn’t one sided there are others that could win it. Towns is likely but there are others.

Like almost every season, there’s 2-3 guys like Porzingis, Okafor, and Towns that could take the ROY. I see Towns taking this season. Just great rookie numbers from game one of the season to today.

Like everyone else, I think Towns is the clear choice. Besides his scoring (efficent scoring at that) and rebounding, he is also playing good defense (which gives him a big edge over Okafor). I could see Porzingis winning but for that to happen:

    1. The Knicks need to make the playoffs

    2. His 3 point shooting needs to be closer to what he has done recently than his season average. He has shot 41.7% from three the last 5 games. I doubt he can keep that up, but if he could shoot around 38% from three from here on, it will help. Keep in mind early in the season he was abysmal from 3 (amazing how good he was when that part of his game was not working), so he probably will shoot better from 3 from here than what his current average is.

    3. He will need to keep playing good defense

    4. If his rebounding increased, that would help him

     Towns.  I guess.

Porzingas or Okafor more likely to make the All Star team this year if, like, 5 or 6 Eastern Conference forwards/centers sprain their ankles or get the flu.

Solid top 3 though.  How often do you get 3 really good big men in one draft?

Porzingas has a better shot at winning the Rising Stars game MVP.  More of a flashy guy than Okafor or Towns.

Although the season is just over half over.  Still time for any of these three to take the ROY award.  Or, we could get a tie.  The Knicks MIGHT need to make the playoffs for Porzingas to get the award.

Never underestimate the power of a playoff run. The Knicks are 2 games out of the 8 seed in the East (which is actually a +.500 spot this year).

Kristaps playing for a winner could always bump increase his odds over guys like KAT and Okafor putting up better stats for bottom dwellers. He’s coming on too. In Jan he’s averaging 15.9 ppg which is more than Towns’ Jan production (15.5ppg in Jan) and just 1.6 points below Okafor (17.5 ppg in Jan).

Towns is still the favorite, but if Kristaps continues to improve his stats, and is playing ball in the beginning of May, I think he’d beat both of them out.

Dark horse, and unlikely to win but don’t be shocked to start hearing his named mentioned; Devin Booker. He’s only averaging 9.5 ppg but this month he’s averaging nearly 17 ppg since he’s gotten more playing time and moved intot the starting rotation since Bledsoe. If he can keep close to that pace to finish out the season, you’ll have to consider him, especially with his lights out 3 point shooting. I’m a UK fan and he was my favorite player last season, so I’m really thrilled to see him play so well in his rookie season as the youngest player in the NBA. I thought he would sorta struggle like most rookies do in year one, but he’s looking like he can be a future all-star. He plays really hard and doesn’t back down despite players coming after his because he’s a fresh faced teenager.

Co-winners, Towns and Porzingis, the easy option for the NBA.

If the Knicks make the playoffs, maybe Porzingis gets the edge over Towns there.

Okafor and others, no chance.  Unless they suddenly become superstars.

Towns is the obvious pick….which is fine, because its obvious for a reason, but where is the fun in the easy guess….

I am going to base my thoughts on predictions for the 2nd half of the season and go with somewhat of a darkhorse despite the recognition he has gotten lately with his play.  Myles Turner is opening some eyes right now and I think his playing time and role will continue to grow if hiscurrent level of  play keeps up.  I keep thinking his gaudy FG% will come back down to earth and I continue to be wrong.  He still has some things to learn with team defense and his assists numbers are low…..but this kid is 19, and this is really the first 10 games or so that he’s really gotten any burn do to his early season finger fracture……if he had been getting this amount of burn all year I believe he would be firmly in the convo with Towns, Porzingas and Okafor….and if those guys hit the dreaded rookie wall like many do in the 2nd half…..Turner may just get back into that convo anyway being that he isn’t worn down from playing the first half.  Just a thought.

Okafor has consistently filled up the stats column this season so far but at the moment KAT seems to be getting better and better so I’d make him favourite IMO.

Porz has done what we hoped his first year upside would be so he’d be in my top 3 too with the two guys above.

year even though his coach seems to not want him to play very much…. Okafor is the 4th leading scorer at the Center position in the entire NBA & the crzy thing is, he’s doing it on only about 15 shots per game…. He’s also a much better defender, rebounder & foul shooter than advertised…..

Kat is just so solid everywhere but the T-Wolves are free falling again…. So I agree w/ the guy above, w/ the Knicks in the middle of a run for the playoffs, & b/c Porzingus #’s are just about the same as KAT’s & the Oak Tree…..

I’d have to say Porzingus wins R.O.Y.

& b/c Porzingus #’s are just about the same as KAT’s

      ——————————————————————————–

KAT is averaging 2.6 more points per game and 2 rebounds more per game. His PER is 4 points higher (22.5 to 18.5). His FG% is way better (53.9% to 42.6%), his true shooting is much better too (59.1% to 52.2%) and that takes into accound that Porzingis shoots more threes. Porzingis has a .1 block advantage on KAT and that’s it, I wouldn’t really say their #s are about the same.

Don’t get me wrong, with a really strong second half to the year, and if the Knicks make the playoff, KP might get serious ROY consideration. But right now his numbers aren’t around the same.

Porzingis is a better defender than Towns, not that any of you noticed. He’s been a better defender from day 1, back when Porzingis was laughed at as in no way ready to be a starting PF in the NBA.

Porzingis is way longer, and is even quicker laterally and in space than Towns.

Porzingis’ superior D shows up in the advanced stats, and if Towns was as good of a defender as KP is, Minny would be a lot closer to the playoff conversation than they are.
