As an Arizona native I’m disappointed on how this kids career has been delt with so far. I’m close with many people in the Arizona high school basketball community and none have said a positive thing about this guys father who happened to jump back into his life at a convenient time. Glad to see he recently enrolled at Sierra Canyon School in the greater Los Angeles area since I do live in LA and now can go watch him live but am bummed he won’t be representing his home town as a high school player. Thoughts?

I’m not sure who you have spoken to but I live here and coach high school basketball. His father has not been at any point disconnected from his son. In fact the oppposite is true. He is extremely involved in his son’s life. Not only Marvin but the other children as well. His wife is usually with him with I see them. So that part is not true.

While some may not agree with the many moves he is making with his son (I for one don’t understand them) it is not for us to understand. At the end of the day it is his son and his family. Would I make some of the decisions he has made? Probably not. At Corona he was playing with Alex Barcelo and 2 other D1 guards. They played a national schedule and had won 4 straight state titles. But he being the father made a different decision based upon what he felt was best.

I have interacted with dad a few times and whenever I see them they are all very respectful folks. But I have learned 1 thing in coaching. When it comes to a parent and their child…a parent’s thought process is different and not representative of how they are in all other situations. Dad is to the point and ABOUT HIS CHILD. His concern is his child and his family. Again; I’m not justifying dad’s actions but I will tell you that he is no different than most other parents of children who play sports today. His child just happens to be the best player in his class and has options and leverage that most do not.

So in short I would be careful not to label dad a bad guy because he seems to be making shrewd moves that are centered around his son and his family. He is clear when he’s made moves. He will always seek to put his son first over whatever others perceive to be the decision that should be made. And again…he’s no different than most other parents.

Most parents are holding their kids back…transferring schools 2-3 times in a high school career…all in the name of their child getting what THEY want out of the deal. Again he’s just in a position of leverage because he’s special. And boy is he special as a player. What a mature player to watch play. Calm, poised, skilled, long..unselfish.

I know I was all over the place on that but….there’s my take.

In the case of the phenom, Marvin Bagley III; there’s nothing to worry about.. He’s got it made, he’s an anomaly.. Like a better, left-handed version of Chris Webber that can play SF, and he’s going to be incredibly savvy vs double-teams when he’s finally ready to enter the league.. You really just need to plug shooters, defenders, a pg, and a bigman around him and he can make a whole lot of different stuff happen, from all over the court…

HS basketball is no more than an exhibition for a player like that – he’s dominant vs much older competition.. He’s already proven his point. He’s got a substantial resume already as an amatuer player, Team USA member and obviously very well known on the AAU circut,. His talent is no smoke and mirrors show.. Good luck to whoever’s gotta try and dethrone him from that top spot in 2018.. or the #1 pick in 2019, that’s going to be quite the task..

Playing next to Cody Riley(who’s also a lefty) he’ll be able to do whatever he wants, he can play big or small, and there’s plenty of room for him to face up… I know Bagley put up big #’s vs Riley in a game last season, but Riley hit the gamewinner. They have a few top-50 and top-100 players on Sierra Canyon too.

I’m just an outsider but I’ve been aware of his story for some time, I recall reading a while back he’s been in-contact with Karl Towns father, for some mentoring/guidance. I read Marvin had a 4.0 GPA at Corona, he interviews well for someone that age too.

Obviously his father was getting paid at Hillcrest, but it got some bad pub and they kiboshed it instead of letting that linger, so it’s not that bad in my eyes. Marvin’s so good at basketball, wherever he chooses to play in college is going to get massive publicity/traffic/$$ over it, he’ll garner plenty of national tv attention – So I can’t really blame his dad for trying to squeeze some $$ out of the situation while he still can..
