CavsDawgParticipantSources: LeBron says he’ll stay
Comment Email Print Share
By Chris Broussard
ESPN The Magazine
ArchiveThe Cleveland Cavaliers got some bad news followed by some potentially terrific news on Sunday. In a last-ditch effort to recruit Trevor Ariza away from the Houston Rockets, LeBron James told Ariza he would remain with the Cavaliers past 2010, according to a person close to Ariza.
Even that wasn’t enough to get Ariza, who verbally committed to join the Rockets last Thursday, to change his mind and go to Cleveland.
James
JamesBut the Cavaliers will gladly settle for the consolation prize; if indeed James’ statement to Ariza was more than an empty sales pitch.
“Trevor asked LeBron if he would be in Cleveland after next season,” the source said. “And LeBron said, ‘I’ll be there. Of course, I’ll be there.'”
James could not be reached for comment on Monday.
James’ conversation with Ariza was part of the Cavaliers’ attempt to make the free agent swingman the next Hedo Turkoglu, who backed out of his promise last week to join Portland and instead accepted a deal with Toronto.
Cavs general manager Danny Ferry and head coach Mike Brown flew to Los Angeles and met with Ariza on Sunday, according to several sources with knowledge of the situation.
Ariza
ArizaAriza, who had accepted a five-year, $33.5 million offer from the Rockets last Thursday, also received telephone calls from James and Shaquille O’Neal. When James told Ariza he’d be a Cavalier past next season, Ariza was less than convinced.
“He thought it was just a recruiting tool,” the source said. “LeBron definitely said it, but until he signs the contract it doesn’t mean much.”
The Cavaliers did not ask James or O’Neal to call Ariza, but as he did with Ron Artest, James took it upon himself to reach out. James’ future in Cleveland has been an issue with potential signees.
Artest, whom the Cavaliers had interest in before he agreed to terms with the Lakers, was concerned about signing a multiyear deal with Cleveland because of James’ ability to leave in 2010. And even O’Neal, who was traded to the Cavs less than two weeks ago, tried to find out about James’ long-term plans with the club during trade talks.
Even so, according to sources, a flattered Ariza strongly considered reneging on his agreement with the Rockets and heading for Cleveland, which made him the same offer as Houston last week. In the end, however, he decided to keep his word to the Rockets.
“He’s a very loyal person,” the source said. “[Rockets coach] Rick Adelman had lunch with him for three straight days last week and that meant a lot to him.”
Ariza presumably will sign with the Rockets on Wednesday, the first day free agents are allowed to sign contracts. But until then, other teams can recruit him, and he can change his mind.
Though Ferry and Brown left Los Angeles Sunday night thinking their mission had failed, the Cavaliers spoke with Ariza’s representatives one last time Monday afternoon, only to be told that he still planned to be a Rocket.
Sources say several factors led to Ariza’s decision. First, his toddler son lives in Los Angeles with his mother and Ariza liked that Houston was a much shorter flight than Cleveland. Second, Adelman promised him the Rockets would feature him offensively while the Cavaliers refused to guarantee him a starting job. Instead, the Cavs told him he’d be given a legitimate chance to compete for the spot against last year’s starter, Delonte West.
“He wanted to be sure he’d start,” the source said. “That was a big hang-up.”
While an about-face is still possible, the Cavaliers, who met with Channing Frye in Cleveland on Monday, aren’t holding their breath.
“As far as we’re concerned, he’s going to Houston,” a team executive said. “We’ve moved on.”
The Cavaliers, of course, are hoping James doesn’t do the same thing a year from now.

this is for all the dumb asses who talk about Lebron leaving Cleveland, sorry but there’s no hope for the Knicks to be even close to winning shit soon so you might as well keep overpaying the crappy players

aarondsonixfanParticipantThere we go all you new york fans.. LeBron staying in Cleveland
0 - Posted on: Mon, 07/06/2009 - 10:20pm #177585

Mr. BasketballParticipantthat does not mean anything! first of all, the fact that ariza is not a cav may change the answer as well. players can say whatever they want but u can’t believe anything until it happens. if he really was going to definitely stay, why didn’t he sign an extension yet? elton brand told baron davis (his good friend) that he would re-up with the clippers but he did not. u can’t believe anything until happens, this means nothing and ESPN is just trying to create buzz.

Knicksboy34Participant… I heard this last night all i could say is LOL.
YOU THINK IF ARIZA BELIVED HIM….HE WOULD PLAYING IN HOUSTON RIGHT NOW?
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 5:15am #177626
CavsDawgParticipanthaha thats funny, i got one idiot who says “losing out on trevor ariza could sway lebron to leave”, and another one saying “if Ariza would’ve believed him, do you think he would’ve went to Houston?”
umm lets think, guaranteed starting job in Houston where a guy gets to be the #1 or 2 at lowest, offensive focus on the team with McGrady and Yao hurt and Artest gone, or go to Cleveland where he’ll be just another role player…
Sure playing next to Lebron is nice and maybe if he didn’t get his ring this year, he would be okay with that, but Ariza already got his ring now he wants to put up the stats for his next big pay day.
Knicks fans will try and tell themselves anything to believe their only hope at shit is a guy signing their in FA, but the problem is, he’s not going there, they just refuse to accept it.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 5:19am #177630

Knicksboy34ParticipantNo…your a unrealistic Cleveland fan…
Lebron James is not signing a extentsion and no FA’S wanna go there…the last fa “splash” you guys had was Larry Hughes.
The Knicks are the biggest Basketball City on the Atlantic Coast. I’m telling you he will opt out…im not sure he will be a Knick but he will opt out.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 5:27am #177634
CavsDawgParticipanthe’ll opt and and re-sign, YOU’RE right.
and the last FA splash we had was larry hughes, you’re right, that was the last time Cleveland had money to actually spend.
who was New Yorks last FA splash? who was New Jersey’s last FA splash while we’re at it?
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 5:32am #177640

Knicksboy34ParticipantYea but even before adding Larry Hughes…the biggest addition to your team was….Shawn Kemp is 98….Cleveland Cavs were terrible in the 90’s and 00’s they are not a attractive team to go to. Sorry.
The Nets adding Vince Carter? Jason Kidd? They are a big Trade team.
The Knicks when we were good added Allan Houston, Latrell Spreewell, Marcus Camby Etc. Big names come to NY…Known Fact.
If we had 3-4 more million…we would have added J-Kidd this year.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 5:37am #177643

OldSkoolBasketballParticipantLebron probably say that to get Ariza to Cleveland which didn’t work. He could always change his mind.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 5:37am #177596

gatorheelsParticipantNOBODY has a clue what LeBron is going to do. He wont make up his mind till after the season. Haha u lame duck Cavs fans….u r going to trust Trevor Ariza, who chose Houston over your Cavs hahah what a joke. This means absolutely nothing…get over it. LeBron could stay in Cleveland, but he could go to New York just as easy. King James isnt even close to making up his mind yet. Cleveland better get some better free agents cuz their supporting cast is a bunch of SCRUBS.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 5:57am #177649
CavsDawgParticipanthahahaha you say Cleveland isn’t an attractive city to go to, then your argument for New York is Allan Houston, Latrell Spreewell, Marcus Camby….
Allan Houston signed in 1996, Latrell Spreewell was traded in 1998, marcus Camby was traded in 1998
in case you forgot, that was 11 years ago….
and I love the Spreewell argument, traded to new York because no other team wanted to take on a guy WHO CHOKED THEIR COACH!
New York Signed 1 guy 13 years ago and thats your argument for big name players coming to New York? but i’ll give you this, they traded for the head aches Steve Francis and Stephon Marbury…
I’m just curious though, how do you expect New York to lure Lebron? here, come play with nobody? literally nobody, there’s only what, Jordan Hill and Toney Douglass are the only guaranteed contracts for the 2010 season. But you know, the amazing Eddie Curry isn’t going to let his player option go, he’s not worth anywhere near 11 million so you know he’s going to pick up the player option!
as of now, this would be the starting line-up if you signed Lebron next off-season…
pg – toney douglass
sg – jared jeffries
sf – Lebron james
pf – Jordan Hill
C – Eddie Curryyeah i’m pretty sure that starting line-up will really sway Lebron out of Cleveland.
its funny that the hopes of your team rely on signing somebody in a league where there’s almost no such thing as a legit free agent signing. Free Agency in the NBA is all about mid level players getting big contracts, a la Larry Hughes or Ben Gordon more recently.
Shaq is like the only legit free agent who signed elsewhere in the NBA in the last 20 years or so.
essentially, New York is relying on something to happen that has happened once in the last 20 years or so, where a huge name player changed teams.
NBA teams are built through draft and trades, signing big stars off the FA market is, well, rare.
but it’s the New York ego where they think New York is the golden destination for everybody, and it’s going to be funny when next off-season, when they end up giving a max contract to somebody not worth it. New Yorks only legit chance is a sign and trade for Chris Bosh, Lebron and Wade aren’t going there.
New York and New Jersey are going to be screwed by Bird Rights, it’s all about the money and Lebron himself wants to be the richest he can be. He’s on a team that has ownership in one of the richest countries in the world, a country that really expands Lebrons global reach. On top of that, he wants to be a 30 million dollar player like Michael, who is the only player so far to make 30 million in 1 season. If Lebron leaves Cleveland, he’ll lose his bird rights and never make 30 million in a season.
p.s. Lebron is bigger than the city, he could play in Vancouver, wear a Yankee hat and everybody in New York will love him
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 6:10am #177652

gatorheelsParticipantCavsDawg…please stop being so biased
You forgot about David Lee is more than likely going to remain a Knick. You also left out Wilson Chandler, Gallinari, & Almond. Hell Nate Robinson may still be a Knick.
The Knicks need a PG, they will sign a good one in the 2010 free agent market if they dont sign one this year. Not to mention they may get Chris Bosh also.
That supporting cast is way better than Cleveland….that is a fact
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 6:11am #177653

Knicksboy34ParticipantBut your saying hes gonna stay in Cleveland? You ask people in the NBA…NY or Cleveland? they will go NY.
If NY had the money…most FA would try to go there. LBJ can never earn 30 mil because…the rules dont allow it. The most a team can offer a player is about 18-19 mil. He could come to NY (the biggest Basketball Market on the Atlantic coast) and win a title.
Cleveland adds a #3 option (Mo Williams) and a old 350 pound big man who can run or defend the Pick and Roll.
NY will have around 45-50 mil cap space so if LBJ comes to NY…someone else will join him

gatorheelsParticipantHaha yeah LeBron didnt even tell Ariza he was staying in Cleveland. No wonder Ariza went to Houston hahaha. Shaq was a good pickup but compared to what the other teams in the league have added once again Clevleand just isn’t doing enough through trades & free agency to win a championship. LeBron is gone.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 7:11am #177683
Stanford hoopsParticipantso wait wait..do any of us know what lebron said to ariza besides the chris guy whos reporting it?…so how can we just as easily dismiss him saying it…the only people who seem to dissmiss it are people who dont want him to stay in cleveland..unless ya’ll were actually there..if ya’ll were my mistake…is it me or is it that some people believe the espn reports unless it either doesnt benifit there team or they dont like it..lol
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 9:17am #177790

Knicksboy34Participant2015 – $27,296,390 (year 6) (year 13 of his career, 31 years old) not 30 mil….
thats not 30 mil. And I never make things up! Dont be a Loser man. Im not gonna argue with a man who’s team never won a NBA championship. A fan who’s team sign and trades for guys like Darius Miles and Ricky Davis.
Lebron is not staying in Cleveland…think about it? Why deny to everyone that you said your staying in Cleveland? Because he is not.
Your a idiotic Cleveland fan who need to find the 2011 1st round prospects because you will be picking high after Lebron Leaves.
Also, Why would Lebron Opt out to make the same money? Idiot.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 9:18am #177789
CavsDawgParticipantthis is why you’re stupid, Lebron can’t earn 30 million in a year? the rules don’t allow it?
you making more shit up? you can’t talk about things you don’t understand buttercup and when you try to say “rules don’t allow it”, you just make yourself look like a bigger idiot.
here i’ll help out a bit for ya… Bird rights allow the team to give player 10.5% increase each year, as opposed to 8. a Max contract for a player of 6 years experience is 9 million or 25% of the cap, whichever is greater. in 2010, the cap is expected to be at 64.6 million
2009 – $15,779,912
2010 – $16,568,907(105% of previous contract)(year 1)
2011 – $18,308,642(year 2)
2012 – $20,231,049 (year 3)
2013 – $22,355,309 (year 4)
2014 – $24,702,616 (year 5)
2015 – $27,296,390 (year 6) (year 13 of his career, 31 years old)my numbers are a little off actually, that only adds up to 129 million, his actual contract would be 133 million
however like Kobe’s option, there’ll be a catch in this 6th year, he could opt out like kobe could’ve and re-sign a new max deal, and with a player over 10 years in the league, a max deal is 35% of what the cap space could be.
I could take this further if you want but if you notice the increments of increasing salary, you’ll see that 30 million in a season is easily obtainable.
i’ll leave you to do the math to see that reaching 30 million in a season for losing bird rights is likely impossible unless somebody signs him to a max deal when he’s like 36.
so don’t sit here and act like you know the rules of the league
actually, now that I think about it, looking at their track record, New York would be dumb enough to give a 36 year old Lebron James a max contract….
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 9:24am #177792
CavsDawgParticipantno shit thats not 30 million, but do you think he’s going to retire at 31? nope, he’d opt out when he was 30 and sign another max or finish the current and sign another max….
He’d be at 30 million by 32 years old at the latest….
you’ll make yourself believe anything, won’t you?
you really have limited knowledge of this game and how everything actually works, don’t you?
and then you make fun the Darius Miles and Ricky Davis? you really want to compare stupid moves track records between Cleveland and New York and how costly those mistakes ended up being?
didn’t your team trade for guys like Steve Francis, Stephon Marbury, Cuttino Mobley to name a few, there’s plenty others….
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 9:31am #177796
CavsDawgParticipantoh and you’re not going to argue with a fan of a team who never won a championship? thats funny, i wasn’t aware that knowledge of a fan was based on how many championships his team won…..
you’ll have to explain to me how that works, how you have more basketball knowledge than me because your team won a championship….. despite your championship coming in 1973, before you were even a thought in your daddies mind
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 9:31am #177797

Knicksboy34ParticipantUm….no he wont opt out for a deal when he can make 27 mil on the last deal? WHO DOES THAT?
YOUR A FOOL….IM SORRY PLEASE. STOP TALKING. Let’s see…..
He could make 27 mil in Cleveland…why stay there and rot for the rest of his career…let him.
or
go to NY and Brooklyn (my hometown) and make 20-24 mil and make a boatload of endorsement and promotional money in the NBA’s Biggest Market on the East Coast?
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 10:22am #177828
Stanford hoopsParticipantlol..yall are funny..yall each make good points…lebron used to be able to make more there with endorsments but ever since the asian company bought the cavs that has changed ( espn has a big write up on that)..personally i would rather go to ny instead of cleveland. but history has shown us that the home team has the advantage..neither one of ya’ll have any players that star players are figting to play with so that point is pretty moot….both of ya’ll will have alot of free money next season..off the top of my head im thinking the cavs will have more cuz of shaq comming off the books and the knicks having curry, lee,al harringtons contract and im guessing they will try to resign wilson chandler and he will command a nice pay day (but i think thats not till 2011)..but what ya’ll both need to worry about is miami ( if wade stays) because thats more attractive then either of yall…nice market and a player there to help…as long as he doesnt go anywhere where the team can challenge the lakers im happy
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 10:24am #177829

Knicksboy34ParticipantJosh…tell me if you agree or disagree
The only way Lebron Stays in Cleveland is if he feels he is too Emotionally Connected to Cleveland.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 10:45am #177837

gatorheelsParticipantPersonally I think the only way LeBron stays in Cleveland is because of emotions. If I was a pro in the nba I would want to play for my home state/city. Then again I would really consider going to a city that presents a better opportunity to win and has a bigger market. It is a toss up. Playing on the biggest stage in MSG in front of those stars in New York may just be to attractive for LeBron to pass up. I actually would love to play in Miami too if Wade stays. Miami is a lot of fun…palm trees, the beach, nice weather, sexy ladies everywhere. It will be entertaining to see where the King ends up. I wouldn’t be shocked if LeBron joined Wade if Miami had the finances to pull that off.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 10:45am #177838
Stanford hoopsParticipanthey stays if they get some players around him…i think its harder then people think to get him out of there..not just because its the team hes played for for awhile but the fact that hes actually from there….to be honest the more i think about it the more id like for him to go to ny so they could be more relavent….its pretty much a up hill battle for every team more then it is for cleveland but its not impossible like getting kobe from l.a
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 11:10am #177874
CavsDawgParticipantwhy would lebron out of of 27 million? the same reason him and Wade and Bosh are going to opt out of their 2010 year to become FAs, because it’s about the extra money that they’re going to get in the long run….
it’s the same reason they signed the shorter contract than Carmello did, you opt out of the final year and when you re-sign, you’re going to actually make more money…..
i’m arguing with a 16 year old who doesn’t even understand how the NBA salary cap works…. I can only explain it so well kid, the rest of the research is on you man.
if he opts out of the 27 million, he’ll end up making more than the 27 million the next season because he was able to sign a bigger contract.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 11:27am #177897
CavsDawgParticipantjosh, NY has more money to spend than Cleveland, but thats because they’ve emptied the cupboard in hopes to bring in big names in 2010.
The problem is, they’re going to absolutely suck this year, even with D’Antoni, the Knicks will be one of the worst teams in the league next year because there just isn’t talent, you can say Cleveland outside of Lebron has no talent, but Cleveland has Lebron so they’re contenders, NY will end up with one of the worst records in basketball.
NY is hoping they can lure a FA next off-season, they’re hoping that they can pull off a sign and trade to bring in one of the big names, but don’t expect Cleveland or Miami to help out at all if they manage to get Wade or Lebron. Anyways, Wade, Lebron and Bosh would be leaving 30 million on the table in their next deals, they can all sign 133 million dollar contracts with their own team or 101 million dollar contracts with another team, and for a year shorter, when you take that extra year into account, they’d be leaving over 10 million on the table over a 6 year span if they left their team.
NY is hoping a miracle happens, and while some 16 year olds think that miracle will happen, us older people who actually have a concept of money, and have seen how the league works, realize that money talks in the end.
The future of New York Knicks basketball relies on a miracle signing in 2010, but their more than likely going to get a solid player but not Bosh, Lebron or Wade, but they’re going to overpay for that player and they’re going to continue to be a doormat for teams in the east. it’s hard for them to accept that the team they root for sucks so instead of them building a team, they’re going to hope somebody falls for the flashy lights of the city and goes to a team thats going to be weak.
But it’s not only that they hope they’re going to get 1 superstar, but they expect to get 2, which is unlikely. See here’s what they don’t understand, even if they do sign Lebron away from Cleveland, he’s going to be surrounded by nobody. they’re afraid to commit to any contract longer than 2010 and it’s going to bite them in the ass in the end, they’re not going to have David Lee because they’re not going to be able to re-sign him and then sign two max contracts.
here’s the point i’m getting at, even with the money to spend, what they can put around Lebron James next off-season is worse than what Cleveland will have in place to put around Lebron.
Like I stated, they have 2 guaranteed contracts in 2010 right now and 2 player options that will likely get picked up. they’re relying on two miracles, not just 1.
It’s funny, Cleveland is doing what’s in their power to get players around Lebron to form a championship level team, New York is doing everything in their power to have as little salary as possible in 2010 so they can put Lebron on an essentially an expansion team….
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 11:28am #177899

Knicksboy34ParticipantYour not making sense…..name one player who ever opted out a 27 million dollar deal?
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 11:30am #177901
bluedevils12Participanti dont believe this even for a minute. Lebron was simply recruting ariza. i really dont see bron staying with that team. i think whether bron wins or loses thisseason he will get out of cleveland and go 2 a bigger market.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 11:33am #177905
CavsDawgParticipantgod you’re dumb, if he opts out of 27 million, the deal he’ll re-sign will be worth more than 27 million for that year….
it makes sense, you’re just dumb, i’ve said the same thing numerous times and you have yet to figure that out….. it’s like talking to a wall

CavsDawgParticipanti sound like a homer? haha, i’m the homer for being a Cavs fan, but you’re the realist for being a Knicks fan? the city that people expect Lebron to go to if he doesn’t re-sign in Cleveland?
really dude?
there’s a chance he opts out and goes elsewhere, but odds on favorite are that he stays in Cleveland
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 11:38am #177911

Knicksboy34ParticipantNo your Dumb…noone opts out of 27 Millions……you mind is thick.
You know what? I dont even want Lebron James to come to NY anymore….pointless. You Cleveland Fans need to get this through your head : 8 years- No Titles. He will not go back to Cleveland where no FA’s want to go to. Even if he does not go to NY, he will go to a team where he will be the front runner to win a title.
It’s not all about about money for James. He will leave Cleveland because you have no attractions (even D-wade said it today) and you cannot trade for a Superstar anymore. Shaq will be a shell of himself and Mo Williams is terrible he is not even a #3 option in my eyes….get over your self.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 11:43am #177916

Knicksboy34ParticipantAnd…How is he gonna opt out of a deal and then pay him more? When has that ever happened?
Oh you opt out of 25 mill….no we can pay you 30? Come on….im not that dumb now….

CavsDawgParticipantDUDE, I’M GOING TO SAY THIS 1 LAST TIME. IF HE OPTS OUT OF THE 27 MILLION DOLLAR FINAL YEAR. THE FIRST YEAR OF THE RE-SIGNED CONTRACT WILL BE EQUAL TO OR GREATER THAN WHAT HE’D OPT OUT OF WHEN HE SIGNS THE NEXT MAX DEAL.
AGAIN, IT’S LIKE TALKING TO A WALL. you’re absolutely retarded, you have 0 credibility and you’ve proven it today. you have no knowledge of how the salary cap works yet you continue to talk like you have knowledge of how the situation will go down.
your dumb ass keeps thinking that if he opts out of 27 million that he’ll be making less, that is completely not true, it’s actually the opposite yet you don’t seem to get it.
Lebron James will stay in Cleveland, and will be a 30 million dollar a season player. Unlike you thought, you can make 30 million in a season and there aren’t rules against making 30 million a year.
do me a favor kid, you don’t understand shit about basketball, so you may want to pay attention a little harder in school

CavsDawgParticipantoh and you want to talk about odds of Lebron leaving?
Vegas has payoff for Lebron staying in Cleveland at -175, then him going to the knicks is +300, him going to the nets is +400, and him going to detroit is +700.
so its actually really good odds, by the guys in Vegas(and you know sports is their business and if they really thought Lebron would leave Cleveland, his odds to leave wouldn’t be so high because the payoff is higher) who know sports better than some little pipsqueak Knicks fans who think the world revolves around New York

gatorheelsParticipantlol I got a good laugh over all this. I don’t think LeBron really cares about the money as much as you think. He just wants to win a championship. He has a better chance of doing that in New York. Cavs Dawg you just underestimate the talent that the Knicks currently have. Cleveland doesn’t have a better supporting cast than the Knicks.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 11:56am #177932

gatorheelsParticipantWow that is interesting stuff. Yep Vegas knows what they are doing. I didn’t know the odds. If he goes to the Knicks though it wouldn’t be a huge upset or shock. I wonder why they don’t have odds for him going to Miami since he told his friends that was his first choice ha.

Stanford hoopsParticipantthe current talent the knicks have is pretty bad..i think you over estimate them..with that current line up plus lebron they will struggle still mostly against any team with a legit big man or pg…what peopel arent understanding is it woul have to be a team close to a championship and right now the cavs are alot closer then ny..now things canchange depending on which team gets a second fiddle star but it has to be a player with other role players that will be able to match up with the magic and the celtics and right now the current cavs team and current knicks team dont have that..ya’ll both just better hope miami doesnt resign wade and then wade gets in lebrons ear about comming to miami
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 12:09pm #177947
CavsDawgParticipantCleveland doesn’t have a better supporting cast than the Knicks? outside of David Lee, who do the knicks really have?
i assume you look at the scoring column and judge players? which you know, is totally the best way to judge players…../sarcasm.
Except in Cleveland, they play 2 way basketball, something Lebron James actually enjoys playing. New York plays a form of street ball, run and gun style which has proven to not win titles, unlike the 2 way basketball which has actually been proven to win in this league, see Detroit in their prime, San Antonio….
and thats irrelevant, what do they have in that off-season right now? nothing, they have Douglas, Hill, Jeffries and Curry under contract for 2010 and thats it.
first of all, if they re-sign Lee that means they’re not going to be able to bring in 2 max contracts in 2010 because Lee’s contract will be too big. and there’s no guarantee that Robinson will be there, there’s no guarantee for Chandler or Gallinari….
they’re afraid to spend money on anybody, which is going to hurt them in the long run.
Lebron enjoys playing with Mo and Delonte who will both be under contract in 2010, he has taken JJ Hickson underneath his wing who will be here.
The signs just don’t add up for him leaving Cleveland, between the money, the city-sized house he built here, the penthouse he’s putting his mother into, the family ties he has here, not to mention the numerous times he’s said he loves playing in Cleveland, it just doesn’t add up. On top of that, he has so much “player control” with the organization. He’s essentially an assistant GM and an assistant coach on top of being the premier player….

Knicksboy34ParticipantOK Caws Dawg.
Cleveland wants to keep Lebron James? Really? Let’s see how they did that. In the Midseason, they added to good players next to LBJ. You could have got Richard Jefferson, Josh Howard, Ron Artest, Tracy McGrady etc. You keep Wally and got nothing. You win 66 games and almost got swept by Orlando : A team with a PG who been on like 4-6 teams (Alston) a guy who couldnt get burn in GS (Pietrus), A SF who could not defend or drive (Lewis) a PF who can slash (Hedo) and a C with 1 or 2 post up moves and shoots free throw like Wilt (Howard)
Ok, So you lose…at least there’s FA and the Draft right?
WRONG! You go to the draft with the 30th pick. You have the chance to add players like Mills, Budinger, Sam Young, Blair etc and you take…a high upside player? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? THAT DUDE WAS ON RUBIO’S BACKUP TEAM!!!!!
Then you add Shaq….a man who is over the hill who can give you 15-7 but cannot run nor defend the Pick and Roll? You add Shaq to a PG in Mo Williams who got eaten up by Rafer Alston (again, a player who got traded like 3-5 times) Good Job.
Now, Artest, Odom, Ariza and Hedo are on the market….you add NOTHING! Noone wants to go to Cleveland and Ariza says Lebron is staying in Cleveland.
Lebron denied it the morning after……. you can give him 100 million dollars but Cleveland cannot attract FA and will not get any one to come there…….
Im Done, say whatever you want.

CavsDawgParticipantoh by the way, Ric Bucher was just on ESPN saying that he believed full well Lebron James hinted or outright told Ariza he was going to be in Cleveland after 2010.
makes sense, Ariza’s camp has nothing to gain or lose by saying Lebron said he’s staying in Cleveland but Lebrons camp has something to lose by the hand being tipped early. He’s not saying publicly he’s staying or going because at the end of the day, this is a business and in business you never tip your hand till it’s official.

CavsDawgParticipantwe could’ve gotten Richard jefferson? really, their GM came out and said 2 teams inquired about Jefferson at the trade deadline, one team wanted wanted Milwaukee to throw in picks to take the contract off their hands and the other, he didn’t want to trade inside the division…..(Cleveland and Milwaukee are in the same difference, what a coincidence….)
we could’ve gotten Josh Howard? really, what team did he get traded to? I didn’t realize it was a 3 way phone call between Ferry, Cuban and you….
we could’ve gotten ron artest? see Howard, but replace Cuban with Morey..
we could’ve gotten McGrady? I didn’t realize he was traded, but I did realize he got hurt and didn’t play the playoffs, just like every year….. yeah, Danny Ferry didn’t trade for a guy who got hurt, what an idiot…
draft day? yeah because rookies always make impacts on playoff teams…./sarcasm. what did our draft have to do with anything, 30th picks always make immediate impacts…./sarcasm again.
Shaq can’t defend? i agree he can’t guard the pick and roll but Shaq can’t defend? thats funny….
and Artest? dude’s options were between Cleveland and LA, and it’s been no secret that Artest has always had a love affair with LA, not to mention they just won a title, he picked a title winner over a title contender, happens often.
Ariza? the kid got his ring and wanted to be a starter and a star, not just a role player. he has been in Kobe’s shadow, why would he turn around and go to Lebrons shadow, he has a chance to be the #1 option in Houston, he’d be the 4th option in Cleveland.
hedo? I didn’t realize we had like 11 million dollars to spend…
Odom? he’ll sign for more than the MLE….
and then Ariza’s camp says Lebron said he’s staying, Lebrons camp(NOT LEBRON) denied it the next morning…. like i stated, Ariza had nothing to gain or lose by saying it but Lebron’s camp wanted to keep the staying/going thing alive because in a business, you never tip your hand early.
anything else you think is right?

gatorheelsParticipantCavsDawg you make some good points but you have to admit though that Cleveland just hasn’t given LeBron near enough help. Also I am probably wrong but I thought Gallinari & Chandler will still be under contract in the 2010-2011 season. Also Lee may not get paid near what people are thinking so it is possible for the Knicks to re-sign him and still get two pretty big stars. I am not saying the Knicks have an all-star supporting cast I just think they are better than Cleveland.

Knicksboy34ParticipantCavs Dawg do u think Cleveland is winning a title this year with that roster?
Do u think adding Shaq pushes them over the Edge? A man who cannot run or DEFEND THE PICK AND ROLL?
Mo Williams who got his pride ripped from him by RAFER ALSTON?
Are they Winning a title?
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 12:34pm #177971
Stanford hoopsParticipanti think cleveland has done a pretty good job with getting ok talent around him each year they add something and they get better..all it will really take is one more player because the role players they have are really good role players…reguardless if he stays or go to ny though he has zero chance to win a title anytime soon and possible in the future with how good and young or primed portland and the lakers are….i just see others teams that have better peices then what ny or cleveland can have unless they add a amare or bosh…even if they add a boozer or joe johnson or the other free agents i still cant see them overtaking these other teams
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 12:47pm #177979

gatorheelsParticipantPG- ??? Douglas
SG-Chandler/Douglas/Almond
SF-LeBron/Gallinari
PF- Bosh/Hill
C- Lee/Hill/Milicic/CurryThat would be some serious talent surrounding LeBron (even if they didn’t get Bosh they still could add some other good free agents) Not to mention whoever they add through the 2010 draft. Obviously they have to find a PG. New York will have enough talent around LeBron to seriously contend for a title. Plus Nate Robinson may even still be a Knick. Those players sure look a lot better than West, Gibson, Mo, Varejao, & Big Z.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/07/2009 - 12:52pm #177989
Stanford hoopsParticipantwow how much money do you think the knicks would have..check out the pay roll…you still have currys contract and al harringtons contract is nothing to sneeze at either..nate is gonna command a rasie and lee is gonna get near 10mill a year…sorry that will only work on nba 2k unless i added up something wrong…..new yorks players do have better stats but that has alot to do with dantonis offense…i dont know lebron but im guessing hes smart enough to not be too hapy with a team that just wants to run and good and not play defense which we all know dantonis teams dont do…someone made a very good point..his way is not gonna win you a championship ..the only title it will get you is the nba’s team scoring title…they scored points last year but couldnt stop a ymca team which is another reason they sucked

Knicksboy34ParticipantDont even put them in LBJ in there…CawsDawg will get angry and will give you 1000 foolish reasons why LBJ wont come to NY ( im putting Joe Johnson and Chris Bosh instead)

Stanford hoopsParticipantknicks..though that line up is flashy it not nearly a title contending team..is weak downlow also..howard would love to play against that team …and there no offense down low..yes hill might be a ok player in a coupel of years but in a year im not buying him being that significant of a player..why does everyone keep forgetting al harrington..lol..is he a free agent after this year?

dejuiceboxParticipantAll right, lets get to the point
if you can play in the pits of Cleveland or the best city in the world (NYC) where are you going to play? Add in the fact that NY will have a bigger stage, a better team and its obvious to where Bron will be in 2010
Why waste your time rotting in the pits of Cleveland when you can go to NYC
who will cleveland have by then? mo williams is about it
knicks have chandler, hill, probably lee, douglas
and he will be able to win championships, something he wont do this year or ever if he decides to waste his basketball life away in cleveland0 - Posted on: Wed, 07/08/2009 - 4:09am #178282
jcjParticipantI’m neither a Knicks or Cavs fan but I am interested to see where Lebron decides to go. I don’t think his statement to Ariza can be taken seriously – its a recruiting ploy on his part. If he was really serious about staying in Cleveland, he’d have declared that in public and not to someone he’s just trying to get. I don’t think Cavs fans can trust that Lebron will stay until he actually signs a contract, or at the very least, declares it publicly.
