So I’m just getting home from work and I’m watching the recording of the game and a little into the 1st I hear this and had to rewind.

Bill Walton (known to be one random mothef$&@& when announcing and had been reaching Duke Vital levels of annoying all through the Maui invitational) started a rant on that could pretty be summed up by him declaring he would ignore the ncaa and play Cheick Diallo now and ask for forgiveness later…like the saying. He asks his broadcast partner who obviously likes his job if he would do the same and says it “would end badly”

Bill then proceeds to start going in on this dude and asking him if he even has the will to live life on the edge or the wild side and to cross the line but doubts that he has ever had to “live” that experience. His partner just replied with “well…I’ve been sitting next to you for 3 straight days bud”

A foul is called on Thomas Bryant and Walton quickly goes back to the game and asks his partner how many fouls Bryant and Zimmerman have. After his partner tells him Walton says “Oh my god!…………back to Footlocker where you belong” followed by 10 seconds of silence.

Broadcast partner: “Who gave you that joke? (As in who over the headset told him to say it) The footlocker joke…who gave that to you?”

    Bill Walton: huh?

BP: You’re saying that was a Bill Walton original joke?

Bill Walton: Who said it was a joke…

    BP: Easy fella….

They get back into the game for a few seconds.

BP: not sure what that was about

    Bill Walton: who cares?!?

BP: It would be kind of interesting to know.(in a whiny voice)

Yeah that’s probably an incredibly lame story but I thought it was funny while watching it.

The broadcast partner was Jon Sciambi. I was watching the St. John’s game earlier and noticed his distaste of Walton. To his defense Walton was calling all the players by a wrong name, and went on a rant about solar energy during the game…. Bill to say the least is a bit out there…

after 2 straight minutes off odd exchanges between them Sciambi said, "The people in the booth want me to ask you what you think of the upcoming championship game."

He stressed the "people in the booth" making it clear he wanted nothing to do with Bill’s commentary.

Really can’t stand Bill Walton as a commentator. Would be great if he had his own podcast that wasn’t strictly basketball related, but when it comes to broadcasting live games, I just don’t think his brand of humor and his style fits. Very agrivating when a good game is going on and the commentators are bickering between each other or going off on rants about completely unrelated subjects for multiple minutes at a time- get back to the game anaylsis like what you are paid to do!

I used to look forward to hearing walton call games just for the entertainment value but he is just getting too out there right now. He has basically just become a characiture of himself as an announcer and is clearly more interested in making himself the star of the show instead of just calling the action on the floor. I understand you have to give someone like walton a little more leeway than most, but he is taking that leeway as an excuse to basically just say whatever the hell he wants on the air and insult whoever he feels like. ESPN either needs to reel him in or take him off the air, which would be a shame because I really do enjoy the entertainment value he provides. This is just uncomfortable to watch though.

We need more Bill Walton’s in the world than Dick Cheaney’s. Commentating I enjoy it, he is entertaining and puts things in perspective big picture wise and always breaks down the psychology of the moment very well.

I really can’t stand the guy.  I heard the whole exchange that you were refering to also and it was pretty ridiculous to say the least.  He’s an unprofessional douche lord IMO.  The only cool thing he said was "Maui Wowie", which is an awesome strand.
