One of the most interesting thing’s I’ll be paying attention to during the pre season is Portland’s front-court rotations.

Currently, the Blazers have 5 big men (strictly PF’s or Centers) that either need or are expecting good minutes next season: Mason Plumlee, Ed Davis, Myers Leonard, Noah Vonleh, and the caveman Chris Kaman. I could even see Al-Farouq getting some minutes at the 4 in small ball lineups as well… further complicating matters. It wouldn’t surprise me if Kaman is dealt sometime before the trade deadline, but nonetheless he won’t be happy rotting away on the bench behind younger, less proven players until that day comes.

So… who starts in Portland’s front-court? It seems inevitable that Meyers Leonard starts due to his strong 2nd half (and playoffs) with his ability to stretch the floor at a high %. If that’s the case, does Ed Davis start next to him? Plumlee?

Unless Vonleh blows everyone away during pre-season action I don’t see him starting out of the gate unless unless there’s an injury. But I would be surprised if he doesn’t see 20+ minutes of action as a back up.

So who do you all think should start and get the lion’s share of the minutes in Portland’s front-court?

I think Lillard’s game lends itself to an uptempo style where he can outchuck other teams rather than try to outdefend them in the halfcourt. Maybe I’m 180 degrees wrong on that, but I’d think Mason running up and down the court plays to his strengths as well, and that’s a good guy to just send out there and grab Lillard’s rebounds, and beat other centers up and down the court.

And with Leonard spacing the floor, Plumlee is a great young big guy to play a super-garbage man role.

I didn’t follow the Nets closely, but I’m guessing that Plumlee played very well with Thadeus Young. The same dynamics would probably succeed with Leonard in Portland.

Like T-Rex stated, it would seem practical to give Meyers the start seeing his growth late in the season along with familiarity with the system; Plummlee could be a perfect fit along side an outside shooting frontcourt partner. With that being said, I fully expect Vonleh to grow immensely and play with confidence. Ed Davis will do what Ed Davis does.. run the floor, contest shots and rebound on the offensive glass..

I expect all four to play between 18-30 mins a game. I think Leonard and plumlee will be the opening night starters. However, I like vonlehs potential more than Leonard and think he will move into a starting role at some point in the season.

I think Plumlee will the most productive, but Davis and Leonard have proven themselves as well, and should see similar PT and Davis should have comparable production. Vonleh has the most upside, but I expect him to play the least of the four this year, unless he magically finds his confidence.

Lillard isn’t a true floor general, but he does excel in the P&R, and luckily for him, Davis, Plumlee and Leonard were all strong in the P&R last year.

    Plumlee: 61.1 FG%, 1.06 ppp

    Davis: 61.4 FG%, 1.09 ppp

    Leonard: 53.4 FG%, 1.32 ppp (lots of P&P for 3s)

Go with Mason and Myers.  That looks like a tough inside combo.  This looks like a trap game that can ruin a road trip.

Lillard with those bigs should work.

Noah is probably improving.  Ed Davis is average. Should be a good backup but plays better as a starter. Alas, he is a backup.

Once they realized that Aldridge was leaving I liked that Portland became very proactive & came up with a plan before Aldridge officially left… If I was a Portland fan I would be very happy that my franchise was Acting rather then reacting….

I really liked the Vonleh & Henderson for Batum trade… Vonleh is just a HUGE kid w/ a great skills set, Henderson is SO under appreciated…. He’s very talented & explosive & I luv that he can either back up Lillard or play with him as a combo guard & Allen Crabbe looked Great in the summer league – a lot of scouts & talent experts really liked Crabbe in the Draft a couple years ago – Jeff Goodman of espn really like Crabbe & I agree w/ him, at 6′ 6” he’s got good size… So I like that back court rotation…

I really like Vonleh but I would continue to allow him to develop off the bench…. Leonard & Plumlee are young – I would start that young nucleus, race up & down the court, push the pace, make it fun for the players & it’s great for the fans when you have a core of young hungry guys w/ potential – I know Portland won;t win their division but I think fans will be pleasantly surprised….
