    Streetball used to be hot.

Rucker Park Entertainers league…And-1 mixtapes…Nba Street Video Games…The Professor…Rafer Alston…Above the Rim…And of course all the killer shoes like Reebok Blacktops

Now…the NBA doesn’t want anything to do with endorsing Streetball in any way.

    Why is this?

Is the NBA trying to squash the Hoodrat perception people had of ballers like the Jailblazers and Gilbert Arenas?

    If so…is it working?

You brought up Gilbert Arenas, who as a basketball player, had a great story.  Underrated, overlooked he came into the league a 0 and made it top the top.  Gilbert Arenas also brought four guns to his job and left a thinly veiled threat that he was going to kill a teammate.  Now, nobody says "hibachi" or cares remotely about Gilbert Arenas.

If you own a business that makes billions of dollars, you want your employees to exhibit a certain amount of decorum.  My assumption would be that the NBA finds the decorum off streetball to be detrimental to their bottom line.

There was an interesting article on espn.com about a year ago on the death of streetball and playground ball in general. For some reason I can’t upload the link but if you google "espn.com playground basketball" it comes right up.

Streetball is alive and well. In fact streetball is played in more parks around the globe than ever before. It’s the self-indulgent, uncompetitive, And1 charade of streetball that has died out. Good riddance I say. Ball handling and dunking are fun things to watch but the obession over these abilities is like only watching Home-Run derbies instead of baseball. It’s an exhibition, an individual contest that is reminiscent of an untelevised one-time olympic sport. Or something that would air on ESPN Ocho.

Basketball is a game that requires more than just world class athleticism and ball handling. (Not to say that streetballers possessed such a title. Do I think the best And1 dunker is a better athlete than Eric Bledsoe? The answer is no). Basketball is a game that involves a strong knowledge and all-around feel for the game.

The incredible feat of Rafer Alston making the league is something that I would like to see more of. Not only because I love seeing committed ballers realize their dream but because it’s a win everytime attention is brought to real organized ball instead of the busking-for-tip performances that were popular in the early 2000s. Just my opinion.

A-Dog messed around and got more than a triple-double. He almost became Assistant Attorney General of the United States.

Before the family bidness pulled him back in.

He might know. That dude is so gangsta ...

Meanwhile, my cousin used to be absolutely convinced that, if allowed to compete, the Harlem Globetrotters would win the NBA title "without sweating". Not even sure where or how he had ever seen them play, actually, however he was totally certain they would "dominate everybody". I’d try to explain the huge difference in level of competition to him, and he’d just start yelling at me. Shouting, "BUT THEY NEVER LOSE!!"

I was like, are you kidding me? I mean, personally, I’ve only seen a few short clips, but don’t they sometimes use a trampoline?

Globetrotters do lose, though very rarely. They have over 20,000 wins as opposed to only around 400 losses. But they’re a circus act not a real basketball team, they would get crushed even by the 76ers.

However when they started out back in the late 20s and early 30s they were a little more serious. They played the Boston Celtics a few times and unofficially won, the Celtics forfeit twice to avoid losing to a non-NBA team.

In 1935 they were tied with the Celtics 32-32 and with two minutes left the Celtics quit the game to avoid officially losing, although quitting is considered a loss…

Then in 1938 they rematched, the game was tied 36-36 but because the Celtics had to "catch a train" they forfeit this game as well.

In 1939 however the Celtics finally finished their game, and they got dominated by the Globetrotters 37-24.

This was pretty much the only time the Globetrotters ever played an actual NBA team, since then they have played minor league teams and these days they mostly just whip-up on the Washington Generals which is a team that pretty much travels with them to play them, and the Generals lose 98% of the time.

WTF? the NBA didn’t exist until 1949…and the Celtics were founded in 1946 during the first season of the BAA

Correct, they were called the Original Celtics. They have three championships in the EBL & ABL and are in the basketball Hall of Fame. I mistakenly thought they were linked to the Boston Celtics before the NBA began but after further research they are not.

Streetball is still flourishing all over the world.

I know in my city in Australia the local government is finally investing in full-size, well-maintained public use courts and they are packed out every weekend and most week nights.

Now, I think there are a few reasons streetball has less impact on the NBA these days.

    1) Better scouting: Kids with talent and potential are being scouted more extensively at younger ages, so players developing their skills on some unknown playground then making the leap to college and wowing people just isn’t as likely – those kids would be identified and start to receive proper coaching.

    2) AAU leagues: Kids are spending their summers playing AAU ball instead of working on their games against grown men because it’s better for their knees (allegedly) and you have a better chance of getting scholarship offers if you have a dope highlight reel from AAU ball than just being a guy working on his skills off the radar in a public playground.

    3) European influence: Gone are the days when coaches just ran endless isolations, the League in the last 5 years has started to covet dead-eye shooters, guys who can play within a system and solid fundamentals, not crazy handles and amazing isolation moves – you don’t get a great jump shot playing streetball all the time, because the wind typically makes it difficult to shoot with a high arc resulting in flat shots from a lot of streetballers.

Finally, the reason streetball in the sense of And1 mixtape etc isn’t as popular anymore is due to the availability of endless highlight reels of players at all levels on Youtube.

Why pay for something you can see for free online?

    Just my thoughts.

I dont know about you, but the whole cleaning the NBA and its image has definitely contributed. The changing of the clothes for players on the sidelines, the agressive punishments for players being on the court, the fallout after the Malice at the Palace has certainly added to the "purification" of the game. But most importantly, the best players of the past 10 years or so are decidedly team oriented. Lebron James plays team ball. Steph Curry plays team ball. Tim Duncan plays team ball.. Kobe…. ehhhhh. But in the 90’s to early 2000’s everyone wanted to be like Mike or AI. The role models for players growing up are more team oriented. That, and the skills teaching and international competion at every age group has necessitated that you need to do more than run, jump and cross over to be successful. Shooting is the most valued comodity in the NBA, especially with increasing statistical analysis, so skill trumps break down ability.

There’s a difference between streetball and just playing pick up with your friends in the summer. But as some people said,if it can help the NBA to get rid of selfish, arrogant 1 on 1 players, then it’s a good thing.
