Now we here
The Highlanders will be joining the Atlantic Sun in all sports for the 2015-16 academic year, two people with knowledge of the situation confirmed to USA TODAY Sports.
NJIT will replace Northern Kentucky, which is moving to the Horizon League. The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because the move has not been made public. NJIT is expected to make the official announcement on Friday. The news caps a monumental men’s basketball season for the Newark, N.J.-based school, which included a win at Michigan (and wins against Duquesne and Yale), plans for new facilities and a CIT semifinal run.
The Highlanders finished the season 21-12. They were Division I’s lone Independent, which made scheduling a headache and the chance to play in a postseason tournament a rarity. The school has finally found a home, and while it will be a challenge geographically, NJIT athletic director Lenny Kaplan has been lobbying for years for any league to open its arms to NJIT, which made the transition to Division I in 2006.
The Atlantic Sun’s other seven members include Florida Gulf Coast, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, North Florida, Stetson and South Carolina-Upstate.
