Toronto Raptors D-League Team and Future of the D-League

The Toronto Raptors should be getting a D-League team this year and have been working hard to build this team. It seems like a great organized effort to create a farm team to allow prospect assets to grow and progress in the franchise without sacrificing valuable minutes and team performance. Not to mention the roster space it opens up.
The Raptors having a D-League is great. It is hard to create a D-League team that plays as a team and functions efficiently with everyone trying to showcase their skills. Toronto has an easy path especially considering all the Canadian players that are fringe NBA talents.
At Toronto’s pre-draft workout Myck Kabongo and Sim Bhullar were spotted two talented Canadians that are still working to get a solid NBA role. Guys I could see fitting this team are Kevin Pangos, Melvin Ejim, Khem Birch, Kris Joseph, Brady Heslip and other Canadians looking to showcase their talents closer to NBA management.
Its not only about luring in and developing talent. Its about finding players willing to participate in a structured order. These guys should understand Deandre Daniels, Lucas Nogiera, and Bruno Caboclo have earned the right to be showcased having the Raptors invest assets on them and Toronto’s 1st round pick this year will likely follow suit.
Instead of drafting BPA or highest potential available to match the NBA team they can work towards building and maintaining the farm team with high reward players and being confident they will develop correctly under the managements watch.
I know Houston is using a similar format in developing a farm team and has been extremely successful. San Antonio and OKC has also had success. This must not only be a Texas thing as Golden State has had McAdoo developing well. Who are we other teams doing this and is this the future of the NBA. Every team should have a farm team I believe that is the reason the D-League is so sloppy. There is no structure.

I think Toronto is an excellent candidate for a D-League team.
As you said, they have plenty of fringe NBA players like Kabongo and Bhullar who would be best served developing under their watchful eye should they need a player like that.
Also, with young guys like Nogiera and Caboclo, having a chance to work together and grow close to the team is an ideal situation.
I think the problem with the D-League is that players still take up roster spots in the NBA even if they are assigned to the D-League as far as I know.
So James Young had to be on the Celtics roster even though he spent bulk time in the D-League.
I feel like guys should be able to sign players or draft picks to D-League contracts that allows for them to be called up, but don’t cost teams a roster spot while they develop.
Instead of having to draft and stash you could draft and develop within the D-League.

  Good points about players taking up a roster spot on their parent team. However I wonder what issues would need to be resolved? Such as would James Young get paid based on what number he was drafted like rookies are now? Or would he be paid what other d-league players are? Also if you pay them based on where they were drafted does placing them in the d-league for the year take a year off their contract?

Or, if you have a guy on your D League team that is unsigned by the main NBA club then he is technically a free agent. Witness Hassan Whiteside who was on the Grizzlies’ D League team at the beginning of the year.
