    What are Play Type Statistics?

Most of the statistical data that is tracked in basketball is based on the end result of plays. Was it a made basket or a miss? Was it assisted? Where did the shot come from on the court? Who grabbed the rebound?

Play Type Statistics go beyond the play-by-play section of the box score and break down what happened on each play to produce the end result. Synergy Sports catalogs all of the action that takes place in each play of each game to provide a comprehensive look at how players and teams execute on offense and defense.

How often does a team run pick-and-roll? How successful is a particular player when posting up on the left block? Who runs the most isolation plays? Which team generates the most offense in transition? These are the types of questions that can be answered with Play Type Statistics.

All of the above is from NBA.com’s description, from here on is my view:

This is awesome! The step that is still only available to those who subscribe to Synergy is the video eye test. Nonetheless, these statistics are fantastic for those who want to know just how players score or defend in certain situations. I know a lot of people here have been loving the Player Tracking stats, which are also fantastic, this is just another excellent way to educate the basketball fanatic. Definitely worth checking out.

One thing you will notice is the "Points Per Possession" versus the actual points. What Synergy does is they rate by "PPP" and give a percentage in accordance to the rest of the league. They also give a "Score Frequency", "Foul Frequency", "Turnover Frequency". The video evidence is really important in terms of scouting as well, plus one being able to get into a situation may indeed outweigh just how efficiently he performs when doing so. I do notice it leaves out a few things Synergy uses as well, like the short, mid and long range shooting percentages, which I think you can find in Player Tracking. Nonetheless, an absolutely fantastic research tool for learning how players do what they do.
