Mark Cuban Wants NBA to Move Texas Teams to Eastern Conference

Changing the conference structure only because the East is weaker makes no sense. However, there are some geographical ‘inconsistencies’ in the conference structure indeed. However, looking at the map it looks really hard to divide the team in two conferences and six divisions that make sense. After the Sonics left Seattle for Oklahoma City they still remained in the Northwest, despite them being a lot closer to the Southwest. The majority of teams is geographically speaking still in ‘the East’. Minnesota is in the west despite being close to Milwaukee and Detroit. I tried to come up with a better format for dividing the teams, but I simply couldn’t. Any suggestions? So re-dividing the teams based on location, not on quality, makes sense to me.

A far more drastic option could be to balance conferences better, adding more teams (two) in the West (Seattle, Albuquerque, Las Vegas, Tucson, Kansas City), movign Memphis over to the East and dropping the divisions. Instead, you could set up 4 divisions per conference, making 4 divisions for 16 teams per conference.

I think there’s no need for switching of teams. NBA just need to have 16 top teams in the Playoffs, regardless of conferences. This way the maybe 9 and 10th team in the West would make it. These teams deserve it better more often than like the 7/8 of the East. This would make the playoffs more exciting for sure, good matchups and avoid sweeps!

 With all this talk of imbalance between conferences and divisions, Tom Ziller of SBNation posted an interesting proposal to which he thinks could eliminate some of the imbalance.

Am I missing something here, because last time I checked, Memphis is further east than all those other four teams in that division.  So if they follow through with Cuban’s idea, shouldn’t they just switch the whole divisions over, or is it because Cleveland needs to stay in the east?

Just based off geography, either Chicago or Milwaukee would slide over while Memphis goes east.  There could be case made for New Orleans switching over.  This is of course disregarding the idea of divisions.

Competitive balance is a funny thing because there is no telling what would happen in a few years.  What if in five years the top teams in the NBA are Philadelphia, Cleveland, New Orleans, and Washington because they seem to have some of the highest ceilings (with obviously some bust potential as well)?  Then the east will be a lot stronger than the west.

Therefore I’d say if there is going to be a switch, it should make sense geographically.  Not saying that this doesn’t make any geographical sense, just not completely.  Maybe they should just give home court advantage to whichever conference holds the best inter-conference record.  I am actually a fan of Mr. Hook Shot’s idea, but that maybe because I am from Seattle and really want my team back.
