AdamJCallejaParticipantKelly Oubre didn’t get in till 8 min left in the first half, didn’t shoot and had a turn over. Then he didn’t even play in the 2nd Half. It’s way too early to know and it’s only the first game if the season but I know he’s better than Brennan Greene, more athletic, better defender and can shoot just as well as Greene. Is this a little glimpse of his season?

ph90702Bill Self doesn’t mess around. He throws down harsh punishments as soon as a problem arises.

Chilbert arenasParticipantFirst game and hopefully message was recieved, but I’ve been saying that Oubre has terrible body language even when he’s on the floor and needs to be hummbled if he’s really going to be a top 5 pick like people are predicting.

Lotto StudParticipantIf I’m not mistaken, there was a Mickey Ds post about him being very selfish in that game as well.

GBeeParticipantoubre’s not as good of a shooter as greene. oubre might have the reputation as a shooter to some who didnt watch him in HS, but he’s more of a streak shooter with questionable shot selection.
KU has a strange mix of players on the wing. they have great athleticism and size on the wing, but the skill level is lacking. selden’s probably the most well-rounded of the bunch, but even he doesn’t do anything particularly well offensively. svi is probably the most skilled, but he’s 17 y/o and plays like it. he looks timid and not playing with confidence. devonte graham was the best player on the team tonight. he played with great energy and aggressiveness on both ends. if you want to point to one player who took minutes away from oubre, look at graham, not greene. oubre deserves more than 4 minutes a game, but he’s gonna have to earn them by finding his niche, that’ll probably start by him playing smart and keeping his energy level high on defense.

MopgrassParticipantIt seemed like a lot of big prospects who didn’t get enough play tonight. Self also didn’t give many minutes to Cliff Alexander.
I know he was streaky and likely thinks he’s better than he is… he drives, can’t get around people, and tosses it up. Still, if he stays in the doghouse, some NBA team will draft him at a discount (Zach LaVine style).

Big_C_KUParticipantHorrible effort on defense the 4 minutes he was in. His effort in practice has apparently been horrible too. Wants to settle for corner jumpers and show little attempt on defense.
He’ll get it figured out or he won’t see time. Self isn’t going to play him just because he’s a top draft prospect. He’s going to play those who help him win. Self will bring Oubre along slowly if he has to.
On Cliff I believe Self is just trying to wait a little longer and make sure he’s truly ready to play a full game and stay out of foul trouble. Similar to Embiid last year.

OhCanada-ParticipantThey really like Brennan in Kansas. He is a high character guy who loves the competition on KU with NBA role player upside. His jumpshot is smooth as silk and he should plau an important role for Kansas this year.
I would rather play a humble Brennan Greene then a cocky Kelly Oubre. Although this is just game 1 and maybe Oubre earns the playing time. Either way its Self’s job to prepare these young men to become professional basketball players whether that be in the NBA, the D-League, or overseas.

HitsterParticipantGood on Coach Self making these guys earn their minutes, he has had a lot of guys returning from a good team over the last few years so he sticks to his proven guys and says to his highly recruited freshmen prove to me you deserve minutes and a starting role.
A lot lesser prospects than Oubre and Alexander arrive at the NBA having been the alpha dog on all their teams so when they aren’t in the NBA it comes as a shock to them or the guys think they have a sense of entitlement.
Coach Self is clearly nipping this in the bud and with his coaching record I would not argue with his methods.

JoeWolf1Self is using Cliff as bench energy. He’s been incredibly effective in that role, and has been a key part in many KU runs, in both exhibitions and their first regular season game.
