AderitoParticipantMonta Ellis was on local Dallas sports radio this week and hinted that despite having a player option to become an unrestricted free agent this sumer, the dynamic shooting guard could stick around for a full one more year and exercise his $16 million option for 2015-2016.
‘This is business, but at the same time, I’m going to look at everything with my family. I’ll sit down with my wife, my kids, and we’ll go from there. I’m a Dallas Maverick for the next two years and hopefully throughout the rest of my career and we won’t have to have those types of talks. We’ll just talk about year after year and see what we have to do.”
That’s significant on a few levels. First, it makes sense since if he opts out this year, he’s under the old media deal and a lower cap and if he hits free agency in 2016, well… chaching!
Second, it means the Mavericks could hold this core of Dirk Nowitzki, Chandler Parsons, and Ellis together. Even with Tyson Chandler hitting free agency this summer, it still provides them with an established sense of continuity and a real chance to build on whatever they accomplished this season.
It means the Mavericks will have cap room, but won’t have to reinvent themselves the way they did this year. They took the best parts of last season and built this team, and now they can hopefully take a formula that works and go forward with it, with cap space to reconfigure their team if they need it.
Of course, this is October. Everyone says such things in October but if he opt in this will allow the mavs pursue at least two of the next season top free agents (Marc Gasol, Rajon Rondo, DeAndre Jordan and Goran Dragic are the primary targets). What the community think about what Ellis said?

ChewyParticipantbut it’s not a ridiculous claim. They had pushed San Antonio to the limit last year and played the Champs better than anyone else.
I’ll be interested in seeing how much they need to pay to keep Chandler. He is getting old, but he still is a 7 foot rim protector, which is what you need next to Dirk.

HitsterParticipantMonta will only be 29 next summer so he could look for a longer deal but might feel it is better to take the guaranteed offer for another year and then look at FA options in 2016. His value should not really drop in a year if he stays injury free and in good form.
The Mavs have cap room next summer plus there is the Dirk player option in 2016 when he will be 38 years old, so maybe Monta wants to wait until then to see how things shape up. He’s had a good NBA career and got good pay days so doesn’t need to chase the mega contracts.

SmooveKRYPTParticipantIt would be smart on his part. He only signed a 3 year deal when he went to Dallas, so he’d have to opt in that year in order to have full bird rights in the summer of ’16, plus the expected salary cap jump would be perfect timing.

OhCanada-ParticipantSomething alot of people forget about Ellis is that he wants to achieve greatness. In his prime at Goldenstate Ellis believed he was the greatest in the league. He wants a championship and nothing less.
