The NFL might get away with a system built around parity, but the NBA has always been built around superstars, dynasties, and great (big market) teams.

LeBron is doing a pretty good job carrying the league now, maybe not as well as Magic or Jordan but he is pretty good.

But, what happens when LeBron retires?

Can Kevin Durant and Anthony Davis carry the league?

Do they have the transcendent personalities to carry the league?  Can guys in OKC and New Orleans carry the league?  Or, new kids like Jabari Parker and Andrew Wiggins who are in Milwaukee or Minnesota?

The league has been carried by only a handful of players.  Since the merger, basically just Dr. J, Bird, Magic, and MJ then Shaq, Kobe, and LeBron.  That’s seven guys basically in forty years.

There have been other greats since then, but how many tickets did Kareem sell?  How many shoes did Patrick Ewing sell?

The best NBA advertising guys are Charles Barkley, Shaq, and MJ.  I liked Dr. J’s Crown Royal ads too.

On the other hand, James Harden and Anthony Davis had THE CREEPIEST TV ad in history.

The NBA needs GREAT, exciting players with good personalities, along with great teams in the big media markets (NYC, LA, and Chicago) as well as competitive teams in Boston.

Are Durant, Davis, and the new kids up to the challenge?

By the time LeBron’s reign is over his son will be ready. Top ranked player in his class. Nickname: Simba.

In all seriousness, LeBron has the body and physical ability to have a very very long career. His final numbers are going to be unreal!

Seattle, I think you are right. Jordan carried the league probably longer than any guy has carried any other league before. LeBron is the most well known and marketable athlete out there right now.

I think Durant is the best all-around scorer ever, and Anthony Davis might be the next guy in that Kareem-Duncan line. I don’t see the global marketing icons there though.

If LeBron CAN’T carry the league for another decade then the league might have to find someone new.

If Rose comes back healthy he’s a very popular figure who could carry the league along with KD, Davis.

I also think if Cousins taps his potential on court and starts winning he has the personality to carry the league.

Have you seen Rose in an interview?  He absolutely does not have the personality.

I think you’re overstating the importance of being good in interviews. Rose’s game is exciting and that’s what makes him popular. Plus, he’s in a big market and people like that he’s humble.

If Rose had never gone down with injury he’d be right there with Durant as the heir the league and if he stays healthy from now on there’s no reason he won’t be again.

I guess you’re looking for something of a TV personality. I thought it was going to be Dwight Howard until he didn’t improve beyond a point, lobbied to get his coach fired, and his "fun" persona didn’t carry through L.A.

Kevin Garnett is soft spoken, but a leader and Anthony Davis’s eyebrows are iconic enough. Kyrie did a pretty fun commercial as that old man. Judging from two commercials, Dante Exum looks like he could do really well in front of a camera. Now he just has to play extremely well. Ok, not easy.

I don’t understand the term of ”carrying the leagye”?

I mean whoever will be the best player of the next generation he will ‘carry’ the NBA.

but it’s not like if there isn’t the next alltime top10 great with big personality the NBA will be gone.

I mean as great as Lebron is, and as important for the league he is even without  him the NBA would be there, much worse but still the same league.

A rookie can carry the league within 1 to 2 years…easily!

None of the guys aside from Lebron and KD can be the face of the league that are currently playing.

However if Thon Maker (just an example) came into the league as both the best player, and was ultra marketable, they could realistically be the next big thing with 12 – 24 months.

Thats all it took Shaq, MJ, Lebron and Magic.

They don’t need to. Look at the talent in the league and how young some of it still is, here is a list of guys over the next 5-7 years will still be competing at a high level and keeping the thing interesting.

    Charlotte – Stephenson
    Chicago – Rose
Cleveland – James, Love and Irving
Detroit – Drummond and Monroe (once he finds a good fit)
    Golden State – Curry
    Houston – Harden and Howard
    Indiana – George
Clippers – Griffin and Paul (maybe Jordan as well)
    Memphis – Gasol
    Miami – Bosh
    Milwaukee – Parker and Antetokoumpo
Minnestoa – Wiggins and LaVine (crazy potential)
    New Orleans – Davis
    New York – Anthony
    Oklahoma – Durant and Westbrook
    Portland – Lillard and Aldridge
    San Antonio – Leonard
    Sacramento – Cousins
    Washington – Wall

Anyone of these guys can make the league an exciting place. There is no reason that Durant or Davis needs to carry the league, for all we know one of these guys may turn into a dominant force a have a dynasty run like Bryant or Duncan if the right players join them.

Add Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker as the next faces of the NBA, mostly because they just generate so much hype. I don’t thinkthere was much hype and publicity surrounding two rookie prospects since Oden/Durant or Lebron. I mean, they sold out a SUMMER LEAGUE game earlier this year. There is an evident buzzz when these players step in on the court, and now they just have to prove their talents this coming season.

If Embiid can stay healthy and realize his full potential, he belongs in this category as well. That dude just seems to have a ton of personality- check out his Twitter.

agree. Embiid has every bit as good if not better physical atrributes Davis has, his at least per minute production was something close to AD before the injury too…

and the way he improves on every single aspect even on his jumpshot (can’t judge too much from it but youtube clip was just sick) and the newest measurements of 7foot1 height 7’6winspan and still improving 265lbs frame..

he has everything simply everything to be there… I mean what he lacks that you are sure he won’t develop? They say now he even tries shoot some threes in practices, even his playmaking seemed promising watching him in Kansas.

It’s tough for ONE GUY to carry the league.  George Mikan did it.  Maybe, Wilt.  Dr. J carried TWO leagues, then Jordan carried it basically by himself for a few years.  LeBron is doing a heck of a job now — better than any other athlete in any other sport.

I would love to see a BIG THREE like MJ, Bird, and Magic.

We have a BIG TWO in LeBron and Durant.  Hopefully Anthony Davis can get there.  Then we have three different generations of players basically (since that Kobe-Duncan-Dirk-KG era).

D Rose can be that guy IF the Bulls make some more runs.  I don’t think he even has to get back to MVP form.  He probably needs a title though or even just a Finals appearance.

The league LOVES comebacks.  ESPECIALLY in Chicago.  D Rose could possibly have the second greatest comeback in NBA history.

That would be IDEAL.  For Rose to get back to prominence and to lead a dominant Bulls team.  Then we can afford to wait on the "next" guys like Davis, Jabari, Wiggins, and guys from the next couple of drafts.

The league also needs a new personal rivalry.  Wiggins and Parker could be GREAT.  Especially if they turn around two small market middling franchises.

A wildcard here would be Carmelo Anthony.  He’s not a guy who can carry a league for a decade at a time.  But what about ONE or TWO years?  Or for a few months at a time?  Like the next PRIME Bernard King?

The league could really use a dominant Carmelo on a solid Knicks team.  The NBA is more fun to watch when the Knicks are good (like the Bulls, too).

If all those things fall into place, then you don’t have to rely on the Lakers.  Watching the end of Kobe might be enough.  The Clippers being good (and very marketable) helps too with Blake Griffin being my FAVORITE current NBA marketer/advertising spokesman.  Now, they can’t be TERRIBLE, but the league has survived some down Lakers years like the Nineties during the Bulls run and the past few years in the Heat’s Big Three Era.

The league has a great TOP GUY and a great SECOND GUY.  We still might be looking for the third guy for a BIG THREE, but we might not settle that until the 2016 Olympics.

Wiggins has a great setup to be the next GUY.

A ROY duel with Jabari Parker.

Teaming with Ricky Rubio which could make Minnesota the Human Highlight Factory (can I trademark that?).  Pistol Pete and Dr. J only played in a few exhibition games together.  Hopefully, we see the second coming of that but for a decade instead of a week.

The 2015 Dunk Contest is his to lose.  If he wins that would be a really great setup.  Dr. J, Jordan, and Kobe ALL have dunk titles.

Then in 2016 you can have Wiggins leading Team Canada.  OR, Wiggins flips sides and joins a potentially all-time classic USA Team.

The T Wolves have already sold out their home games.  Wiggins-Rubio 2014 should also be a heck of a road draw.  The T Wolves are actually my top team to go see next season.  Home opener and season opener for the Grizzlies.  Gotta see those guys.

Andrew Wiggins can already sell tickets.  He will also sell some jerseys and could be a HUGE shoe contract guy if things fall into place.

I can see Wiggins selling more road tickets this season than KG and Love ever did COMBINED.

I can definitely see Wiggins and Parker having a similar battle to what Chris Paul/Deron Williams had a few years back. Neither was ever the best player in the league, and of course, now it’s clear Chris Paul is better, but at the time there was a heated discussion about this.

I think your boy Bennett will have a break out season in Minny. I don’t know if any of those 3 players will ever carry the league.

      Wiggins has a shot.

I for one think Great teams are what Carry the league …and the promise of great teams in the future.

For example look at how loaded with young talent that timberwolves roster is right now.same could be said for orlando and your raptors.

Those three teams can have success as fast as pheonix did.

LeBron and Jabari could be a good divisional rivarly too.  Then you have a Jabari Parker-Carmelo Anthony showdown.

Out West, I would like to see Wiggins vs. Durant and Wiggins vs. Kobe.

When the Cavs, T Wolves, and Bucks can sell tickets you are in pretty good shape.

When was the last time a fan has said, man, I wanna go watch the Bucks?  Ever?  They now have Jabari Parker to go with the Greek Freak.

Team rivarly wise, I think everything is set up for LeBron vs. Durant Round 2.  Also, Westbrook vs. Kyrie Irving and Love vs. Ibaka.

As far as the 2015 draft goes, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Lakers or Celtics get a top 3 pick.  Maybe BOTH teams get top 3 picks.

I watch the game because I like the game not because of who is playing necessarily, I will however pay to see good teams, and the great players make good teams just as quick as good players without great players that are great teams.

I am probably in the minority on most nights, but who knows,I mean how many people who watch games on tv and never go to the games, would go if it were not so damn expensive for anything besides a seat so far away the players look like bugs on a windshield?

When I lived in the city, I would go to alot of games even the cheap ones just to go.

By the way I belive that despite his gifts offensively jabari parker is’nt half the athlete lebron is,and could never guard him.

I would be surprised if jabari parker is ever in the conversation as a legit rival of Lebron James.

I would give antetokumpo a better shot at that slim chance from the same roster.

anyway to each their own, but the league is never really carried by any one player imo.

athleticly gifted players with consistant highlight reel dunks carry the media, and the kids…

and the fairweather sports fans that watch the playoffs and not much else. or the hometown homers that pretend to understand the game.

Lebron is carring the Cavaliers not the Nba

anyway to each their own, but the league is never really carried by any one player imo.

athleticly gifted players with consistant highlight reel dunks carry the media, and the kids…

and the fairweather sports fans that watch the playoffs and not much else. or the hometown homers that pretend to understand the game.

Lebron is carring the Cavaliers not the Nba

Well, the NBA is better than baseball. Baseball has Cabrera but I don’t think he has sold anything. Mike Trout is a beast. Puig is interesting. But, not on the level of a LeBron.  The NBA has better second tier superstars too.  MLB basically has Derek Jeter  and that’s it.

The NFL is supposedly really popular, but how many guys CARRY that league?  Peyton Manning?  Brady and Rogers.  No HUGE running backs (unless you are a fantasy junky).

Funny, but the ONLY sport now with a Big Three is basically golf with Rory, Phil, and Tiger Woods.

You could even say that the NBA’s superstars have been carrying pro sports basically since the Big Three of Bird, Magic, and Jordan.

If I were the league I wouldn’t try to overexpose Anthony Davis, Wiggins, and Parker.  I would just see what happens.  BUT, I would "SUGGEST" to Andrew Wiggins that he compete in the 2015 Dunk Contest.

Should be a great year for the NBA story wise.  LeBron going back to Cleveland, and it also sets up the LeBron-Wiggins storylines.

Then you have comeback stories on two of the big teams — Rose on Chicago and Kobe in LA.  Also, Phil Jackson’s first full season in the Knicks organization.  Maybe the Celtics can do something with Rondo this year.  Then again, the C’s story could be Marcus Smart.

It seems like the 1992-1993 season where you had MJ going for a 3Peat, Charles Barkely going to the Suns after his Dream Team breakout, Shaq’s rookie year along with Zo’s rookie season joining LJ in Charlotte.  The Knicks and even the Nets were pretty good.

Curry and Harden will be the next guys getting the big publicity. They each have a nice look to them, they haven’t had any off court situations, both give good interview and are very good players. Davis and Durant need to get out of their small markets. Once they do, they will get even more exposure than they already have (and yes Durant has tons of exposure and huge Nike deal and everything, but it could be bigger).
