  um, joe dumars isnt president anymore? they hired stan van gundy.. and hes been there for like 5 months… detroit has andre drummond so i cant really say their future is dull either. monroe is a good fit next to him too..

Hopefully once the dust settles he’ll realise that a near-max offer is better than a qualifying offer, because at the moment he won’t get any better offers. SVG is known as a coach that can get the best out of his bigs so I think it would be in his interest to resign. A 3 big rotation is sustainable minutes-wise as long as one of them comes off the bench (should be Josh Smith IMO due to his versatility).
JordanC20, which bad decisions are you suggesting SVG has made (besides a slight overpay for Meeks)? Personally I like all the additions and subtractions the Pistons have made this off season and their future is definitely brighter now than it was 6 months ago.

Monroe is just in a really bad situation in Detroit. They have really bad contracts with Smith and Jennings, and Monroe is forced to play out-of-position at PF. He isn’t a good fit defensively next to Drummond and Smith kills floor spacing.
Detroit made a good move to hire SVG, but their roster still is somewhat dysfunctional. It is a shame they could lose Monroe simply due to horrible roster management.

Wow I’m literally offended…if that offer seriously isn’t good enough to convince him to stay in Detroit then I’d rather not have him if he isn’t fully committed here. It’s even more frustrating to hear this as a fan of the Pistons because all of his tweets up to this point have been pretty much all said he wants to remain a Piston and now this comes out. Let him sign for a qualifying offer then and we’ll see how much less he makes next summer.

    It makes no sense for him to leave if he isn’t happy or doesn’t feel he fits the team. He will probably get a 4 year 48 million dollar deal if he leaves, so it isn’t like he would be leaving a ton of money on the table if he left

      i actually agree. if i were his manager and was looking out for his career and not just the amount of money he makes, i’d review stan van gundy and what kind of system does he run and see if my client will enjoy playing in that system and his value will be maximized.
      looking at stan van gundy, he has shown to favor 2 shots more than anything, near the cup in the painted area and outside with the three. one would think that monroe would be ideal with his ability to score inside as well as pass the ball. what doesnt work out though is he and drummond being field in the court at the same time. i mean, SVG had 2 good bigmen in howard and gortat at the same time but he still wouldnt put them on the court together for long stretches.
      with that being said, i’d be iffy as well since despite having the big contract, my client could end up being the marcin gortat of the pistons. if and when drummond’s offensive game comes around, he would be the primary big due to his abilities on both ends of the court. so id actualy advise my client that playing opportunity might be better elsewhere.
      theres also the fact that if he signs that one year qualifying offer and joins next years unrestricted free agent pool, he could get better offers. a ton of teams will have cap space and would love to add a prime big man. Marc Gasol would figure to be the top target but only one team will get him and he has said he would like to remain with the grizzlies. that would leave teams such as New York, San Antonio, Dallas, etc to give him a solid offer and be more featured in their system as a center.
      if anything, i would try to get monroe a 1 year deal worth 8 mill or something for the following season so that he can enter free agency next year as unrestricted. of course, that would be extremly hard since all the leverage would be with the pistons management. it isnt however, unprecedented. David Lee got a simillar deal when he was with the knicks. however that situation was different since the knicks wanted to be players the following off-season which had lebron, bosh, and the rest going as free agents.
      best case scenario now if i were the pistons is to actually see what the current trade value he has and start to look forward past monroe. either involve him in a sign and trade this off-season or sign him to the qualifying and deal him mid-season. too bad this had to drag out since there would have been more leverage early in the off-season. maybe could have dealt him to chicago for mirotic’s rights and lets say mike dunleavy before gasol chose to sign with them.obviously, what happened worked out much better for the bulls.

Oh and Jennings isn’t a bad contract he’s only 24 and has 2 years left at 8 million a year so really if you somehow unload Smith there’s alot of flexibility there.

Well if Greg Monroe is determined not to be a Pistons then he needs a team to sign him to a poison pill offer sheet or he needs to leave the NBA. Stan Van Gundy seems pretty intent on keeping Monroe so even a poison pill offer sheet might not be enough. I’m surprised that more players in this situation don’t just take the qualifying offer so that they can be unrestricted free agents the following season.

The guy simply doesn’t like the direction the team is going. He doesn’t like having to play with Smith and Jennings, both guys who really like to chuck up threes. He also may prefer to play center, which is only going to happen when Drummond is on the bench.
However because its pretty much the end of the free agency period, there is no one else who is both interested and has the money to make a bid. There might be teams who will pay below this amount, but it is almost certain that the Pistons will match. We could be looking at an Eric Gordon situation.
Thus the best option for Detroit would be to pull of a sign-and-trade. But in my eyes, there isn’t quite an obvious move to make. They certainly won’t be getting the same kind of value back.

He’s a good second third option on a good team but he needs a very specific group of players around him to be successfull due to his lack of a jumpshot and shot blocking. He’d need to go to a team with a stretch 4 that can block shots (Chris Bosh, Serge Ibaka) So Yeah let’s see who pays him that kind of money next year.

  Monroe shots around 80% of his shots inside (at 53%) and around 10% from midrange (at around 43%). He definite has a jumpshot, he just needs to improve his range. I do not think a 3pt shot is a must for a big.
