    The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have hired Ettore Messina as an assistant coach. A four-time Euroleague Champion and a two-time Euroleague Coach of the Year, Messina brings over 25 years of coaching experience to the bench.

    They have just extended Gregg Popovich’s contract but I do wonder are they quietly bringing in a possible long term replacement. Messina has been linked with a number of NBA jobs and is a very highly regarded coach, Poppovich has talked about doing another 4 or 5 years but is now 65 years old so the Spurs could be planning longer term.

    It gives them a seamless transition if Poppovich oversees the rebuilding of the post Tim Duncan era and then maybe decides to move upstairs alongside Ric Burford.
