MattHoopsParticipantIt is looking like, and I hope it does, that the D-League will eventually become a full-fledged minor league system. Do you think they will increase the rounds in the draft?
This is what I am thinking:
1. 13 Players on main roster in the NBA
2. Teams could have some sort of "40 man roster" like in MLB. (Maybe an 18 man roster?)
3. 5 other players are under player control..They can be called up at any time and another player can be sent down.
4. Other players on D-League teams are free agents, which means they can sign with any team. However, for that player to be called up to a team, they have to be put on 18 man roster. They also are not under a league contract.
5. League will have some of options policy.. Players with 0-2 years of experience can be sent up and down as much as possible. However, if a player has more than 2 years of experience in the NBA or D-League, they have the option to sign with another team.
6. Increase NBA draft to 3 rounds..

IhateusernamesParticipantGood idea except for the 3rd rd of the draft. Really only need 1rd honestly. Make everyone else free agents. Would actually make the players more valuable.
Can you imagine the teams that would’ve been scrambling to get Cleanthony Early, or GRob III?

MattHoopsParticipantThe no 2nd round actually sounds like a good idea.

MattP31Participant1.I only like that idea if you have a seperate injured reserve. For example the Sixers spent all of last year with Nerlens Noel and Jason Richardson out for the year and Arnett Moultrie missed a large chunk. A 13 man roster wouldn’t work injury wise. I like the 15 man roster with the 3 inactives on the main roster being eligible to play in the DLeague
2.With the 15 man roster, create an extra 3 man DLeague hold on each team. These guys are in addition to the 15 guys on the main roster. To create teams from hoarding and allow players some ability to have control, make it like baseball where they can only be sent up and down between the 15 man and the extra 3 for 2 years before they need to clear waivers(MLB allows 3 years but deeper rosters)
3.Pretty much agree but in my proposal they get up to 6 spots. The more guys under a team control the easier it is to work an NBA teams systems in
Everything else I agree with

RUN TMCParticipantI agree that the d-league needs a lot of improvement and making it a true farm system would be a step in the right direction. Every team has a d-league affiliate. 18 man rosters with 13 one way contracts and 5 two way contracts that can be called up at anytime thru the season. One way deals can only play in the d-league on rehab stints for a limited amount of time(3 games at a time?). All other players on the d-league roster would be NBA free agents, eligible for 10 days come January. 2nd rounders would be able to develop in the system of the team that drafted them and maybe a few years to prove what they are capable of doing.
