According to Rick Bonnell Gordon Hayward has signed a “major offer sheet” with the Hornets.

I know alot of people will question the major money here. But Hornets are starting to build on having a valid team presence.

From last year’s draft to now alone they’ve added: Big Al, Zeller, Vonleh, PJ, & Hayward.

(Ridnour, Neal, & CDR were also added in that timespan as reserve players.)

Next step will be for MJ to straighten PJ out!

From what I’ve heard Utah will match any offer(I wonder with what number that “major offer” comes)… so don’t be too quick to add him to Hornets’ roster …

Not sure why teams bother with RFA’s – their team always matches

A reported four year $63 million max offer. That’s a HUGE offer, now the question is will the Jazz match? I think they don’t have a choice and have the cap room to do so.

Woj is reporting that the offer is indeed max(63 million for 4 years). Lets see if Utah was bluffing and trying to scare teams away or they really meant it when they said they’d match any offer.

Also, I wonder if this backfired on the Jazz – i.e. if teams didn’t know they are willing to match “any offer”, they might have offered less, but having that information might have pushed the Hornets for a desperate max offer knowing that this would be the only chance they have to make the Jazz not match.

Screwing over Stockton and Malone, taking Al Jefferson, trying to steal Hayward or at least forcing Utah to give him max money.  Michael Jordan will never be allowed in Utah again.

He even bought a house in Park City, Utah. He must think he owns the state of Utah.

I like the deal for Charlotte. 16, 5, and 5 from a wing who is only 24 is solid. I put his value at only 12 mil a year but as a RFA you got to pay more to get him. Fits well with roster as shooter in backcourt with Walker and opposite on the wing from MKG. That fact ups his worth a little more for Charlotte as well. Overpayed by a mil or 2 a year but not a bad deal imo. A lineup of Walker-Hayward-MKG-Zeller-Jefferson will challenge for top 4 in East.

Now if I’m Utah I match. You would sign him for 4 years keeping a strong young nucleus together and you really don’t even need to worry about needing some of the money Hayward would be getting for another 3 years when Burke becomes a FA. By then you’ll have better feel for roster and Hayward’s contract would be easy to move if need be then. Don’t let a young productive asset go even if it is a little higher priced than you feel the value should be.

Hayward gets a lot of props for being on a short list of players to go 15/5/5 or better last year. However, he did it with huge minutes and low offensive efficiency on a horrible team. He was given the opportunity to be "the man" and could not live up to it. He is simply not a #1 option and may not even be a #2 option. $16M seems like a lot of cash for a #2 or #3. And before you start thinking I’m just a hater, go through previous posts I’ve done in favor of Hayward. I have been one of his biggest advocates. I just think $16M seems crazy for who he has been through four years.

Still, I think the Jazz match. They have a ton of cap space and Gordon seems pretty rooted in the community. I’d be shocked if they let him just walk. Expect a match or a sign and trade.

Marvin Williams might come over as well.

So Utah could lose two guys to MJ.

It’s an overpay now but: 1) there are no chances Charlotte can bring in better free agents, it’s a small market and that’s the most they can get. 2) There’s no reason to keep cap space if you’re never going to sign anyone just because you’re afraid you might overpay him. Would you rather have one overpaid guy or cap space you’re never going to use? 3) Hayward is a RFA and the best shot they have is to overpay him (they’re still unlikely to sign him, because Utah will probably match the offer). 4) teams have realized the cap will go up in each of the next seasons and there might be a huge jump in 2017 when the new national tv deal will be signed (rumors are tv rights fee might more than double), so even if they overpay someone now, that contract may not be all that big in 2 or 3 years.

I think Utah will end up matching the offer, because it’s not like they’re getting better players in the free agent market and they have a lot of cap space they have to use somehow. I doubt they’re that ecstatic about it though, they will find themselves with some $27-28 million per committed between him and Favors for the next few years, with Kanter and Burks’ contracts expiring next year. They don’t have to keep them, but they invested so much in that core, letting Jefferson and Millsap walk and now I’m not sure they are all that high on them, at least to the point to believe they have so much upside as a team to committ a large portion of their cap to keep that group intact. At least they got Exum this year.

I thought GTFOH.  I agreed with the guy that said he had the chance to be the man and wasnt ready but that also has a lot to do with timing and being in the right system. Coach Corbin had his struggles. Now I based on his production , potential and skills he’s easilt worth $12 to $13 mil. So paying him $3  mill a year more isnt that much in terms of NBA contracts. Who could you have got for that extra $3mill if your the Hornets? Maybe a vet opresence or lower tier  specialist. Also I’m sure the contract will have incentives he has to reach to get the full max figure. If he meets these targets all that does is validate the contract really.

    Nice move Charlotte IMO

The Jazz should feel stupid. They offered him $12 million. He wanted $13 million. They wouldn’t budge. Now he goes out in free-agency and gets $16 million. Why not just up his offer $1 million? I’m not a GM, but that doesn’t make sense.

Of course this is an overpayment by $3-5 million per season, but the Hornets are clearly giving him an offer they think Utah won’t match.

He’s going to make the Hornets A LOT better right away. MJ is quietly putting together a solid team that will be competing in the playoffs as a mid seed.

The Jazz did the right thing by the books. Hayward was not worth it at the time and frankly did not have a good year either so should not be getting more than 10 million a year. External factors which came out, like the projected rapidly expanding salary cap, is driving the price up of everyone this year.

So new sources say the offer includes:
    – Year 4 player option
    – 15% trade kick option

This sucks for whoever signs him. It makes Hayward pretty much untradable if he doesn’t turn out to be deserving of that contract. The 4th year option is a huge advantage on Hayward’s side, too – in general if he lives up to this price tag, he can pretty much decide to leave after 3 years as unrestricted free agent, if he doesn’t – he simply opts in for year 4 and collects his 17 mil paycheck while the team has to suffer the huge salary load.

One thing is for sure – this is one hell of an agent he has. If I were a guy up and coming athlete without an agent I’d definitely would give this guy a look.

The Jazz ad Hornets could also work out a sign and trade. The Hornets could possibly get Marvin Williams in the deal as well. The only sign and trade offer I would accept for Hayward and Williams is this:

Hornets receive: Gordon Hayward, Marvin Williams. Jazz receive Kidd Gilchrist, C. Zeller, G. Neal, and B. Haywood.

But I don’t think the Hornets are willing to give up on Kidd Gilchist, and Zeller. Its possible that they will since they just drafted Hairston and Vonleh, and still have the developing Henderson. I also think the Hornets like Neal and would like to keep him as a backup to Walker.

So in the end I think Utah will try the sign and trade route, but then quickly realize that the Hornets won’t accept and just match the offer. Yeah its for almost 16 mil a year so overpay bigtime, but Utah has to match. They can’t lose a young player that has been that productive, especially since they are in such a small market. Hayward has exceeded mine and practically everyone else expectations, so it’s time he be rewarded. This deal might be major overpay (and yes, Utah should have just upped their 12 million offer last year and avoided this altogether), and that might mean the Jazz loose Kanter or Burks. But Kanter’s defense isn’t that good, and I think Utah will be looking for a better talent alongside Favors downlow this coming draft or trade deadline. (both are possible especially with the bigman talent that is available in the 2015 draft (Okafor, Towns, Porzingis, Shawn Long…etc) They just drafted Exum, and he could essentially replace Burks if they lose him, and be the better player in the future. So Utah is not at a loss if they lose Burks or Kanter because they match the Hayward deal.
