SwatLakeCityParticipantNow that the draft is over, and I’ve had a chance to rave about my favorite teams picks, take a look at who other teams selected, and try and decide why such player was their pick, I’ve finally had time to look back at my mock and count up my points. In the end I scored 97, not bad. My highest ever, I think. But I think I should have scored 102 instead. And here’s why:
The second round. I had 5 picks all in the second round that were one to three picks away from being correct! Nick Johnson, Markel Brown, Alessandro Gentile, Alec Brown, and Nikola Jokic. Yet because of the second round scoring system I had to award myself one measley point just for being 1-3 picks off. I think most people will agree with me that the second round is hard to mock. Its mostly a crap shot, and a very, very, very, lucky guess that a player goes right where you mocked them in the second round. I only had one pick that was exactly correct, Nemanja Dangubic at 54 to the Sixers. I admit that was a lucky pick, and I’m glad I got 3 points for that but that was the only one I had correct in the second round.
Like I said the second round is basically a crap shot and its very lucky if a player goes exactly where I had him mocked to go. But if a player or even more 5 players go 1 to 3 picks where I thought they would go, it is also extremely lucky. And I should be awarded more points for being that lucky. But instead I only get one measley point for being 1-3 picks off because its the second round? I have no problem with only awarded myself one point for picks that were 4 to 5 or 6-10 picks off, but 1-3 picks off? That is extremely close in a very hard to mock second round.
Maybe I shouldn’t be awarded 3 points for being 1-3 picks off, but only 1 point? I think I should be awarded 2 points for being that close especially in the second round. Yeah, I admit it doesn’t really matter and didn’t make much of a difference in my case. But I am not the best mocker on this site. There are a lot of other people on this site that are better at the mock draft contest than I am. I’m sure they had a lot more picks in the second round that were also 1-3 picks off. But they too have to award themselves one measley point for being seo dang close and still very lucky. They should get more points for their incredible lucky picks in the second round that are one to three picks off.
Okay yes, I admit there is some skill that goes into the second round. But I know the five picks that I had just 1 to 3 picks off had a lot of thought go into them. I had a reason for putting each of those 5 players where I did. Yeah there was some luck in that they actually did go about where I thought they would, but there was also some skill. And I should be awarded more points for that skill.
And yeah the early second round is a lot like the first round in that a lot of the same skill and thought process has to go into the early second round too, just like the first round. Most players that go in the early second round probably should have gone in the first round. But I think the early second round is only 10 picks long. (okay that might be wrong but whatever) And all the players that I was one to three picks off on went after the early second round. They were mid to late secound round picks.
What do you guys think? Should this site change the point system in the second round of the mock draft contest?

GrandmamaParticipantI agree I don’t like the scoring in the 2nd round, but to write 7 paragraphs about it is quite childish. It’s a contest with no prize, who really cares?

ChoppyParticipantThis was the first year I put in a mock draft. I have no idea what my score is and probably won’t even count up my score (too much effort). I will admit though, that when I looked at the scoring system I thought that 3pts for a correct pick in the 2nd round wasn’t very much when you take into account the difficulty in mocking second round picks (trades, draft’n’stash etc). But I guess that they don’t want to swing the results based on the second round and I can appreciate that. All in all, it’s just a bit of fun and I don’t worry too much about it.
Congrats on your best mock result to date!

Mr. HookShotParticipantOne thing is to give points for (both rounds actually) when a player goes to the team you predicted; lot of teams exchange their draft picks, so player X may wound up at the team you thought he would be instead 4 or 5 spots higher or lower

OhCanada-ParticipantI should get like 10 points for being the only person with Bruno Cabolco in my mock.

r377ParticipantIn the second round I reckon they should have 2 points within 3 picks and 1.5 points within 5 picks.
Keep the 3 points for exact pick and 1 point for within 10 picks.

SwatLakeCityParticipantI don’t really care in the end about who wins. And in the end it is just a contest. But its fun to do a mock draft, and to see how you actually did. And this is my highest score yet, so that went into this post. I don’t care if the point system for the second round does actually change. I just thought it would be interesting, and yes I want the change to happen, but if it doesn’t, oh well, I still got my highest score yet.
