Every year the Mavs go after big name free agents, and every year they end up with a second tier guys. In this case I could see them possibly landing Gasol, who’s still a very good player, but no way will Melo be going to Dallas.

Pau would be a decent fit for Dallas alongside Dirk but I doubt Melo goes there as they would not be able to attract another top FA until 2015 by which time Dirk would be 37. But no doubt Mark Cuban will be doing the hard sell.

Every year there is a underrated FA signing that ends up paying blockbuster dividends to the team that signs the player. A healthy Pau Gasol to the Mavs would be that signing. Offensively it would work very well with Dirk and VC freeing up space, and Gasol is actually not a BAD defender.

Like Monta Ellis from the past year’s FA Class, no one thought he’d do as well as he did with Dallas

I would rather 2 quality players @ $10 mill per year than to take Melo the "superstar" cancer. Dallas won with Dirk, Chandler an aging Kidd and other role players. They have a solid team that pushed SA Spurs in the playoffs, they just need an additional one or two "team-first" veterans not the superstar cancer.

Gasol and/or deng. Gortat, Evan Turner, Hawes, Ariza etc

Dallas added Calderon and Monta last year for aprox $15 million combined a year which in my mind was to tide them over to the end of the Dirk era and they really rebuild from then. They only have $27 million on the cap for next season so if we assume they retain Dirk at somewhere between $12 and $15 million a year and maybe Marion at about $5 million a year they will have room to chase a couple of quality FA’s if they don’t try to get a max level player.
