One of my friends compared him to Austin Rivers the other day, which got on my nerves although I did understand where he was coming from. Sure they were both considered combo gueards coming into the league known for their abilities to attack the basket and score. But here’s reasons of how Exum can actually be productive in the league and not be another Austin Rivers.

    1. Show that he can be a Combo Guard and not a TWEENER. There’s a huge difference and Rivers still hasn’t a developed a true position yet. Exum on the other hand, is believed to be capable to play either guard position at this point, not that he’s a tweener, just that he can bring the ball up the court and he can be the off guard coming off of screens and scoring if he lands on a team that already has a franchise PG.

    2. Exum has a better body for the NBA than Rivers. Exum is 6’6 which is the same height as MCW and even a decent height for a SG. Rivers is 6’4 which is a weird height for the NBA although there have been some pretty good non PG’s at the height who have been pretty good in recent years such as Bradley Beal. Rivers also had to gain a lot of weight prior to coming into the league

    3. Athleticism has always been a huge factor in the NBA. Although Rivers did have a great college career and is still a pretty good athlete, elite athleticism has always been one of his lacks. Exum has more of the natural athleticism that it takes to be an elite NBA prospect.

dude, rivers is a sg.  people in the pelicans’ office were holucinating when they thought he could be a pg.  he never played it in high school (brett comer) or at duke (tyler thornton).

combo guard is a polite way of calling a guard a tweener.  usually, based on size and a level of uncertainty about their capability to run an nba offense.

better body?  rivers measure 6’5" in shoes at the combine 203 lbs 6.2% body fat.  exum 6’6" 196.3 lbs 6.4% body fat.  not sure how that is soooo much better…and there are successful 6’4" pgs in the nba like john wall.  they do exist…

athleticism?  rivers did a 37.5" max vert at the combine, exum 34.5".  exum blew away everyone in the sprints and agility, but you make it out like rivers isn’t a good athlete.

i swear people don’t do their homework when they make a post…

Exum is getting weird praises from all over.  I think he may be the biggest enigma in recent history.  I was just recently talking to a guy that said "Although I never seen Exum play, he’s a better athlete, driver, passer, and defensive player than Jabari Parker"  I was just lost for words…

All I can say is this…  Rivers floater did not translate well to the NBA so he can’t finish well…  I know having a shot is major, but if you can’t shoot or finish then it’s hard to stay on the court…

Exum looks faster and more agile than Austin Rivers.

Rivers was an undersized guard who didn’t have the atheleticism to finish above the rim and didn’t have the jump shot to make him legitimate outside threat. He was basically a bigger version of Sebastian Telfair, someone who had sick handle, but couldn’t score over NBA frontcourt defenses and couldn’t scare defenders to cover the arc like Lillard does.

Exum’s jumpshot apparently has a ways to go before he can be considered a great shooter. He needs to work on that. But unlike Rivers, Exum is easily an above average athlete- not an elite athlete- but well above average.

Lastly, Exum has the perfect size of an NBA 2 guard. Close to 6’6 with solid length.

So I guess you could say Exum is a very rich man’s Austin Rivers…. and that sounds like a great NBA player.

I’m not sure if any of you guys remember a player by the name of Andrew Gaze but he is pretty much Mr Basketball in Australia.

He closely followed the development of both Irving & Exum. I read in a local article in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago that he believes Exum is at the same level if not further advanced than Irving at this stage.

That’s no proof that Exum will succeed but Gaze’s opinion is very respected in Australia and it would lead me to believe that Exum will not be a bust and from pick 4 onwards will be worth the risk.

Everyone has been saying he is like/similar to a Austin Rivers but i think he is more like a Alec Burks/MCW to be honest. Exum has good vision and passing ability. He didn’t go to college as everyone knows but showed scouts in U19’s World Champs and the Nike Hoops Summit (vs best U.S freshman coming out this draft) what he can do. Comparsins to Penny Hardaway are not far off, just wait and see!!
