Of these two talented SG’s, who do you believe is the better current and long term prospect? Klay Thompson turned 24 years old this year, and Brad Beal turned 20 last June.

    Season Overview:

    K. Thompson (2013-2014) – 18.4PPG, 3.1RPG, 2.2APG, 44.4FG%, 79.5FT%, 41.7% 3PT
    Bradley Beal (2013-2014) – 17.1PPG, 3.7RPG, 3.3APG, 41.9FG%, 78.5FT%, 40.2% 3PT

    Individual Season Highlights:

    K. Thompson
*38 points on season opener versus LAL
*Scored Double figures 48/49 games to start season
*8 Threes versus SAC on Dec. 1st
*Scored 20+ Points 34 games during regular season

    Bradley Beal
*37 points against stingy MEM on Feb 11th
*5 or more assists 21 games during regular season
    *Just 1.8 Turnovers per game
*20.5PPG/4.5RPG/4.25APG split during his 1st playoff series versus CHI

I would go with Beal although I really like Klay’s intensity on defense

Both are going to be outstanding players for a long time in this league.  I’ll go with Beal since he has the edge in athleticism.  He also plays with Wall who is more of a facilitator than Steph Curry who will take more shots away from Klay.  Slight edge to Beal.

I think this brings up the better point… We know both of these guys are good, but which combo can be better? The GS backcourt can go off on any given night and score in bunches, but the Washington backcourt seems more consistent and plays off of each other better – like a better give and take than GS’s shot happy duo.

Give me Beal. He is better in pretty much every other area except for his shooting ability and quite frankly, I think that is closer than it might appear. Beal is a heck of a rebounder for a 6’3" gaurd. He’s stronger, more athletic and a better overall defender. Klay is a really terrific shooter and pretty good scorer overall and he does bust his butt on D but I just don’t think he has the lateral quickness to be an above average defender.

Hmm. Tough to say. On one hand, I would say Klay Thompson has about 3 inches on Beal allowing him to get his shot off easier, however, Beal is 4 years younger than Klay. They both have uncanny three point shooting. One thing I would definitely say is that the Wizards were not nearly televised as much as they should have been this year. I would have liked to see Beal more.

Both tremendous players but I still think that Klay Thompson has a lot of growing to do, and has a really high ceiling so I’ll take him. But I like Beal too

Tough argument, but I will just go with their ceilings and I think Beal can be the better overall player down the road.

I would say Klay hands down.  He is by far the superior player now and shows tons of defensive potential based on his increased aggresiveness on that end of the floor.  Beal has more potential from an athleticism stand point, but besides that I would take Klay without hesitation.  Also considering shooting is both of their "calling cards" I take Klay because his level of shooting is much better than Beals and there is no reason to believe that will change.

I wasn’t a believer in Beal coming out, but Washington is the perfect fit for him. Give me Beal, he has an edginess and a mean streak that I just don’t see with Klay, who has a tendency to disappear every other game. Beal might have off-games shooting but he’s 20, and the aggressiveness never leaves.

This outta be interesting to see how thier careers play out. Both a similar players.Elite shooters in thier young careers. Beal is younger but Klay has size and length, both are playing with star PG’s and some solid vets. Both can surprise you with thier atheletesism. I wanna say Beal because he’s only 20 and his injuries slowed him down a bit. He was avg 20 ppg pre injury this year

Offensively I think Beal is more proactive than Klay, and more willing to make plays and get his own shot. Klay needs a bad closeout, a mismatch, or a hotstreak to get his own shot. Having said that, Klay is a slightly better shooter, with better size (6’7 vs 6’5) and a better defender. I also think that Klay’s shooting stats have been inflated slightly due to the awesome spacing provided by Curry, a luxury not afforded to Bradley Beal.

Beal has more star potential, and more of a star mentality, but Klay is technically a better player at this point. Long-term, as a GM, building a franchise, however, I’d take Beal.

he can post up way better than beal ever can and at 6’7", he can take on most two guards down low. Thompson’s defense is also better. everything else seems on par tho.

Great thread, which reminds me, how did OKC not get one of these two for Harden? I know they were both young and promising players, but I can’t imagine Harden wouldn’t have been an upgrade to both of them. The Thunder would be in much better shape than having a glorified bench warmer who can’t beat out whats left of Caron Butler and Derek Fisher for PT.

OKC tried to get Beal for Harden but the wizards owner didnt want to pay Harden and Wall max deals while the wiz GM liked Beals’s upside as well. I would take Beal all day, in just his second year and 4 years younger a better playmaker, rebounder, and man to man defender. Klay and Beal are in perfect situations and you really wont be feeling bad if you had either on your team. If the Wiz can hold off the Bulls they should easily get to the conference finals and at 20 that experience is invaluable and will propel him and Wall above Klay and the greatest shooter ever in about 2 years.

I can understand the Wiz hesitating on Beal, he had just been picked, and I like his upside.

I like Thompson too, but he’s more one dimensional, and Harden would have definitely been an upgrade.

Right now Thompson going forward Beal all day. I think he will be a reliable 20ppg plus player for a good 10 years. I also think he creates his own shot and offence for others alot bettet than Thompson and is deceptively athletic. Thompson has a bit more mature game as far as intangibles and little things that their arent stats for but he also has much more in game experience then Beal playing against men.

I don’t see the intangibles or little things with Thompson. Not that he’s a headcase, just, he’s never done something that for me sets him apart in that department. I like the other points you made and agree about the more mature game but so far as intangibles what it seems like you saw is that he’s just older and whiter than Beal.

Not to be that guy or anything, or accusatory, but white players do get special treatment when it comes to "intangibles" – Aaron Craft! – And all I really see intangibles wise from Beal and Thompson is that they’re both solid pros who aren’t bad to have around.

I think Klay is closer to his ceiling than Beal…see what I did there?

Give me Beal. It might be my irrational but kind of rational man crush on him but I just think he’s a dude. Somebody said he will be the best 2 guard in the league in 3 years, and I could see it. He has a poise and maturity that is rare for a youngster and he’s only going to keep getting better.

Both these guys are the future of the two-guard position, and both have great potential. It’s a pretty close matchup, but I’d take Beal. Man, this guy impressess me time and time I see him on televised games; two of which stood out the most the ones vs the Knicks at MSG. His game is just soooo smooth. His best asset is his off the ball movement, which is well beyond his years. (He works best moving off the ball alongside Nene giving him those hand-offs.)

He has so much potential to grow, and I feel his game would really elevate to the next level if his coach plays him the way Rivers played Allen at Boston and Reddick now at the Clippers, and how the Pistons played Richard Hamilton years ago. That is, having Beal CONSTANTLY move without the ball while being set tons of screens.
