vasco1610ParticipantWhy do they sign up for the draft? If they entered the league as free agents they could go to the team they wanted.
How does this work?

Ebown5ParticipantIt isn’t allowed. It is as simple as that. The league and the players association have entered into a collective bargaining agreement that defines how players enter the league.
You don’t have to be drafted to play in the league, but you had to be registered in a draft. If you aren’t picked in the draft then you are a free agent.

TomShoeParticipantAgreed.
The League does the draft to ensure there would be parity between the teams. If draft picks could just enter the league as free agents, a group of close free agents could stage a coup and all sign with one team (like Miami or LA) for bargain prices just so they could win championships together. The Draft prevents this from happening, and makes sure each lottery team has a fair shot at attaining the best potential talent.

vasco1610ParticipantOK thank you, so you have to sign up for the draft at least once, if you are not drafted then you can be a free agent. Correct?

terrancebowerParticipantIs there a cut off age for this though? For example, did Pablo Prigioni ever enter a draft? Did a quick search and couldn’t find any info on him ever entering a draft… just curious

ChrispyParticipantas an international, one becomes automatically eligile for the draft at a specific age (22). once you are undrafted, you are a free agent. Also, if overseas you have played professionally (contract) you are automaticall eligible and, again, if not drafted are a free agent.

LA12ParticipantI believe the draft cut off age is 26 if I’m not mistaken. After 26, you just enter as a free agent.

ChrispyParticipantI wasn’t clear. You are auto eligible for the draft at 22 and if you are not drafted by 26 then you enter as an FA. I left that step out.

MopgrassParticipantIf they were allowed to pick their teams, almost no one would choose As cold weather area unless it’s a really fun city.

GrandmamaParticipantBecause small market teams would never get the top prospects. Cities like New York, Chicago, LA would get most of the big names. Zero chance it would work.
