The New York Knicks have purchased the right the own a D-League Franchise that will be located in White Plains (Just outside Manhattan) and will officially be a team next season. I’m glad to see that the D-League has made so much progress within the last ten years. There are now a variety of current starters on NBA teams who at least spent some time in the D-League during their careers and how teams actually utilize their affiliates now. Pretty soon, it will be more equivalent to how minor league baseball is to the MLB. At some point, every NBA team will have their own affiliate and no teams will need to share a team (Bucks, Pacers, Pistons, Bobcats, Grizzlies and Magic all share the Fort Wayne Mad Ants). If the league could somehow manage to pay their players more money, even more of the top Europeon players could possibly come overseas since it gives them that much of a better chance making the NBA. Also more players skipping college to go pro (Brandon Jennings, Jeremy Tyler) along with upcoming NBA draft prospects from overseas. If they could really end up being more successful than they have already become, there could even be AA and single A divisions of the D-League.

With the amount of success they have had, it has gotten better and better each year since it was founded in 2001.

best move they have done in the last 20 years if they really utilize developing players and chemistry. hopefully other teams follow the trend quickly for the better of the game.

nobody goes to the games.  look at the televised games.  the stadiums are empty.  we had a team in colorado that had to move because of lack of attendance.

i think the way the nbdl is set up is fun.  the players are basically their own contractors and determine their own fates.  any player (who’s rights aren’t owned) have the chance to get called up by any team.  if every team had an affiliate, i’m guessing that would change.

Does the NBA own the rights to the old ABA?

they should bring it back with 30 teams (resurrect some names like the New York Nets and

    Kentucky Colonels too.

they could have a 4 pointer and bring back the red, white, and blue basketball.

then if the NBA wanted guys to go to college two years, they could go to the ABA minor league instead.

they could even experiment with shorter games (40 minute games with 10 minute quarters and 3 minute overtimes).

about fifteen minutes away from white plains. Im hyped to have a d-league team there. We used to have the Westchester Wildfire up there in the USBL but that didnt hold up. I’m a Nets fan, but I’ll still be happy to go to some games up there, even if it is the Knicks D-League affiliate. I will definitely be going to some games there, especially since everything in NYC is so expensive.

Considering the ‘system’ a team plays (both offensive and defensive) is pretty important in the game of basketball, having a ‘minor league’ team as affiliate can really help young players learning the game. Teams can send young prospects to the D-league, let them learn and play the system with a lot of responsibility (instead of the garbage time they might get in the NBA), so they can really develop their talents from within.

Like stated above, ideally all teams should have an affiliate, but also ideally, all teams should have an offensive/defensive identity or system which they believe in (like triangle used to be in LA, or Pop’s system in San Antonio).
