I know I will probably get laughed at but as you all probably know, Chicago sports talk has been DOMINATED by Carmelo Anthony and Joakim Noah’s little All-Star Game "talk".  I don’t want to go into details, besides the fact that there are WAAAAAAY to many moves that the Bulls would have to make to give Carmelo a decent salary.  It would have a dramatic impact on the Bulls roster next season and moving forward.  Chris Broussard didn’t factor in cap holds when he gave his report, which means the Bulls 2 2014 1sts would be counted against the salary cap, as well as $5+ million for Hinrich (which they could renounce), $600,000 for Augustin (a bargain, but he will make more somewhere else), and also 2 more $600,000 contracts because the Bulls are NOT at the league minimum of player salaries on their roster.  Instead of having $15 million with a Boozer amnesty and a Dunleavy trade, the Bulls would be closer to $11.5 to $12 million.  My question is this:

If Carmelo goes to the Knicks and says, "I am going to try and sign with the Bulls", would it be in the best interests of the Knicks to allow Melo to NOT opt out of his deal and get traded to the Bulls for the expiring contract of Boozer and 1 or 2 1sts in the 2014 NBA Draft?   I think that the Bulls would be okay giving Melo a max deal for one year, then if things work out (i.e. Rose actually plays and the Bulls are contenders and he fits into Thibs’s system, LaLa likes Chicago, etc.) he would be willing to sign a discounted 5 year deal with Chicago since he didn’t leave the first year’s $24 million on the table.  Let me be clear, that is a TERRIBLE haul for Melo.  Especially considering that they don’t have a Top 10 pick in the 2014 draft BECAUSE of the Melo trade.

But if he walks, they get NOTHING.  1 or 2 picks in the 2014 draft and a large expiring contract (in a year where they have ZERO room to manuever under the cap anyway) is probably better than absolutely nothing.  The Bulls would have to probably trade down into the 2nd round or give these picks away somehow anyway and they wouldn’t be wasting money just paying Boozer to leave.  I know AT FIRST IT SOUNDS TERRIBLE, but it really could be a take it or leave it scenario.

Just curious what you think.  I personally think it’s a sound basketball move if he says he is out the door but I don’t know if Dolan can make sound basketball moves sometimes.

I guess the premise here is that the 2014 pick the Knicks gave up will actually be 2 middle 1st round picks, so that isn’t such a huge loss from their initial investment in Carmelo.

My question is focused less on IF Carmelo is going to Chicago, or LA, or TEAM X.  I am just AMAZED at how NBA GM’s are holding onto 2014 1st Rounders (heck, even 2nd rounders) as if they are ALL franchise changing picks.  My focus is on if the Knicks were able to recoup a couple picks in 2014 if they really didn’t lose all that much in their trade with Denver.  Yes, they would have a BETTER pick in 2014 if they held onto their own choice, but getting 2 picks in the 10-20 range isn’t terrible.  Also, Galinari, Chandler, Mozgov, etc. have NOT proven to be major losses for New York.

They basically get the chance to jumpstart their rebuilding plan (that they don’t have a choice with) 1 year early.  Plus, they don’t take on any extra contracts that bleed into the AWESOME 2015 Free Agent class.  If they hit a homerun with just one of those draft picks, they are THAT much more attractive to potential 2015 Free Agents.

I agree, to a certain extent. The Knicks took a shot when they brought in Melo. It didn’t work and now it’s time to shift gears in a big way and move him for the best price. I’m not sure the Bulls 2 1’s in this draft is the best price. If I were the Knicks I would be looking out west to Phoenix. Phx. has 3 1’s this year, and 1,2, or 3 1’s in 2015. Plus they have a lot of young talent to offer in trade. Maybe Melo has his heart set on Chicago, maybe not

im a huge new york knicks fan and i would rather knicks trade melo away for a few 1st rounders and expiring contracts. if the knicks can get a few high 1st round picks the knicks can do a quick rebuild in time for the 2015 off season. this mess currently in the big apple was 100% caused by the man who doesnt know anything about basketball (dolan). Im sick of owners that are only in love with profit and not the actual game of basketball. The other front office members need to stand up to these owners and actually tell them if a certain move isnt the best interest for the franchise.

It all depends what Melo decides to do, he’s said he will opt out but if he does opt in then he’ll still be one of the very top players in the NBA amd would still be in line for a huge contract in 2015. Melo really needs to think about his options and try to get on a genuine contender. He’s already a very rich guy with several more years high earning potential ahead of him so money should not be the main motivation for him but it should be to try and get on a genuine contender.

For a guy approaching 20,000 career points and with over 25ppg, he must know that his play off record with his teams is fairly modest.

I’m sure Melo is getting a max contract next year for as long as the league rules allow. I believe he can sign a max contract of five years with the Knicks and only four years with another team if he chooses that team. I think there are huge reasons why he wants to be the face of the New York Knicks for the rest of his career. Now the Knicks are run very poorly. And the team they put together this year never had any chance of being successful. I said at the beginning of the year that they would struggle to make the playoffs. JR Smith has been worse than I thought he would be, so Knicks are even doing worse than I thought. But this was a very bad team (mainly because Bargs is a bad player who should not be in the NBA).

Anyway, there aren’t too many teams who can offer a max salary. I don’t see Melo taking a one year contract with a team to see if it can work out. He won’t risk an injury. Players who get offered guaranteed multi-year deals almost never take a one year deal to get things to work out.

The Knicks suck and they are doomed for the foreseeable future. They have no draft picks, they have an albatross contract in Amare, their defensive stoppers are injured(Chandler and Shumpert) and they have one of the worst PG’s playing right now in Ray Felton. Everyone talks as if Carmelo Anthony doesn’t see this team isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. And then to think another superstar like K. Love/Lebron or Westbrook will just sign the first offer they receive from the Zoo York Zombies in 2015, because they have the glorious benefit of being one of the largest markets in the world, it’s a little asinine and I for one am getting tired of hearing about the Knicks, Lakers and Celtics ruling the potential free agent talk.

The Knicks clear STAT and Bargs’ contracts in 2015, Tyson Chandler also expires then so they will have cap space to make a run at one major FA lets say K-Love. If the Knicks did give Melo a max 5 year deal, I recall that it would be worth around $135 million over 5 years so that would be a big undertaking even for a team of the Knicks’ resources.
