As we all know, basketball is hugely popular all across the world with some highly identifiable global icons.  And, unlike baseball, it is a fall/winter sport that really heats up after Christmas.

Not only is pro basketball popular, but college basketball is big in the US, with amateur basketball being a big thing overseas in Europe.

The Winter Olympics has hockey which obviously makes sense, and I even think that Outdoor American-Style Football would be a great event.  The US would obviously dominate but I think that other countries would catch up.

Right now, basketball is a really big even in the Summer Olympics and also popular with the World Cup (the old World Championships), but should basketball be a part of the Winter Olympics?

    Why not?

Maybe they can do an Under 21 Single Elimination Tournament sort of like March Madness.  Basically every country can field a team and single elimination would make for great entertainment.  With the pro’s being occupied by the World Cup AND the Olympics, then why not make the event for the younger players (under 21)?  That would make it even more like March Madness.  It would also help sell college basketball and our great college stars.  And, usually you would only do the event once (unless a High School player makes the team) so it would make it really special.

I would definitely watch it, and I think it makes sense.  It would also be a bit different than the other global basketball events.

Other ideas: A Three Point Shooting Contest open to ANYONE in the world.  Who is the best shooter ON THE PLANET? Maybe we could find out…  If NBA guys wanted to participate maybe they could take a couple of days off during the All Star Break, or just take off more days for All Star Weekend (maybe an entire week or two during the Winter Olympics) since there are some guys in the NBA that are under 21 that might like to represent their countries.

And, of course, a Dunk Contest that would also be open to ANYONE in the world.  The big stars like LeBron and Blake Griffin might not want to compete in the NBA Dunk Contest, but what about during the Olympics?  The great thing about this, is that anyone can win — whether they are on a pro team or not.

How could basketball be a part of the Winter Olympics when it’s midseason in both NBA and NCAA, hell even in high school??  You think the Heat, for example, are going to let LeBron, Wade, and Bosh go over to Russia to compete right now?  Lol

The NHL takes time off for the Winter Olympics.

It might be hard to get the NCAA and NBA on the same page, but I would like to see a single elimination basketball tourney during the Winter Olympics.  Let the young guys play!  It also wouldn’t take away from the Summer games or the World Cup.

The Dunk Contest would be great too!  There’s enough dunking talent around the world, where you might not even need the NBA stars (although they would help).

Quite frankly, I think the NBA season is too long anyway.  Wouldn’t mind seeing a 74 or a 68 game schedule anyway.  Why not take off two weeks every year for the all-star game? Then during the Winter Olympics some of the younger NBA players can go overseas and play that week or two.

If 32 teams competed for the Under 21 Olympic Gold Medal, you would only play 5 games TOPS.  You could probably play all five within a week and a half (they would also only be 40 minute games).

Why not take off two weeks for the all star game?  You seriously have to ask that?

The NBA takes off several days each year for All Star Weekend.  They could start the season a week earlier, make the first round best of 5 again, and take off another week in order to go to the Winter Olympics (and maybe even add some all-star events, or also market the D League All Star Game better).

Possible added All Star Game Events:

4 Point Shootout.  4 players voted by the fans compete to win the 4 Point Shoot out Title.  The 4 pointer will also be in effect for the All Star Game.

Game between the previous year’s WNBA Finalists.

    Harlem Globetrotters vs. NBA Legends.

    Celebrity Dunk Contest.

The season is too long and intense.  This would be one way to break it up a bit.  This will also allow the NBA to market itself even better overseas (by competing in the Winter Olympics).

While Basketball is played mostly in the winter, it is clearly a summer sport because that’s when it is most played by the people who aren’t in the NBA (regular people). While, professionally, it’s mostly played in a gym, basketball is the #2 (behind soccer) global sport for a very good reason. The reason is that people anywhere in the world can play because all you need is a hoop and a ball (which you can essentially make yourself if need be).
Consider people living in poverty or in countries outside of North America and Western Europe… most people don’t have access to an indoor gym and decent facilities all the time and end up playing outside on dirt/asphault/cement courts. These people are playing basketball almost exclusively in the summer (unless it’s warm all year round). This is  partly why the game is so internationally popular and successful and people love it so much.

Yeah, because during winter, I like to go out to the snow in Russia and play basketball outdoors.

On a scale from 1 to Willie Nelson, how high are you? What does bball have to do with ice/snow? Unless you plan to play it on skates (would watch) then you might as well say anything played in winter should be in. Let’s have Rugby too, NFL, AFL, Football, all the things!

As a rare diehard fan of both basketball and hockey, I prefer to keep hoops in the Summer Olympics and hockey in the Winter.  In Canada, the basketball team would be completely overshadowed by the hockey team if they played in the same Olympics.

Ok so noone has come up with the most obious reason as to why this is idiotic… basketball isn’t played on ice or snow.  Glad we got that out the way

I never said that basketball would be outdoors. I was just saying what I would like for football.

I would like to see more basketball in the Olympics.  This could help.

Many have projected that this will be the last year that NHL players will go to the Olympics because it hurts their product so much.

Why would the NBA do this?
