Phoenix, Charlotte, and Brooklyn are the only likely options left to trade Pau Gasol to.

The Lakers will only take a big expiring contract back and assets. The only teams with big enough expiring contracts are Phoenix, Utah, Boston, Brooklyn, Charlotte, Indiana, Milwaukee, Orlando, and Washington. Utah, Orlando, and Milwaukee are out of contention, so they won’t be involved. Boston is rumored to tank and trade Jeff Green (ill advised), Indiana would have to trade Granger and they’re good on big men, and Washington would have to trade Ariza and Gortat (both of whim they need). That leaves the 3.

Suns Option: Emeka Okafor’s $14 mil (Archie Goodwin or Alex Len are options)
Charlotte Option: Ben Gordon $13.2 mil (Kid-Gilchrist or Cody Zeller are options)
Brooklyn Option: Paul Pierce $15 mil (????????)

There are certainly draft picks to be had. However, unless there is some complicated trade, the Lakers may have missed their big opportunity.

I highly doubt he gets traded now. Gasol’s contract expires too so there is no point in trading him for another expiring contract unless those teams are willing to give up assets. The Lakers would have saved a ton of money in a deal with the Cavs because Bynums contract wasn’t guaranteed and they could have saved on luxury tax. That option is no longer there and a team would have to give up a ton to get Pau now.

If the Bobcats traded Zeller or MKG for Gasol, LA would laugh all the way to the bank…

We will have to wait till the deadline, when teams like PHX will either want to make a run, or tank it. Right now they look good but trading away young/cheap players for Gasol doesn’t make a lot of sense for anyone.

In all likelyhood, LA would have to take on a bad contract if they want young players and picks.

And this is why I said the Lakers are stubborn as f**k. Could’ve saved money, might’ve gotten a decent bench player, but NO. Insist on a player with a lot of potential the other team wants to keep. Damn FO.
