“The Washington Wizards will acquire Marcin Gortat in a deal with the Phoenix Suns for Emeka Okafor.
The proposed deal will include Shannon Brown and Kendall Marshall to the Wizards, while the Suns will also acquire and a top-12 protected 2014 first round pick along with Okafor.
Okafor is currently out indefinitely with a neck injury.”

  Good trade for the Wizards, in the short term.
  I love the fact that they’re going to be able to stay competitive during the stretch run of the season (remember the 0-12 Wizards minus John Wall?). Gortat is a good, underrated C that should be able to hold his own and anchor the defense. Should also keep Nene rested and at his best.
  Only gripe about this is that they gave up by far their best trade asset in that 2014 first round pick. In a draft this deep, that would have been a great sweetener for a team looking to unload a player (Greg Monroe, maybe?) near the trade deadline. Hopefully it doesn’t come back to bite them.
  It’s now or never for the Wizards. They better make the playoffs, because there’s going to be serious questions about how this team was built if they don’t.

    Its year 4 of the john wall era in Washington. Screw the draft.
    They need to be focused on the playoffs. Yea they gave up the best trade asset they had with the pick and an expiring deal but imagine the hole the wizards would be in with no center, Nene likely taking nights off if his injuries start to pile up again, and a cluster of young bigs who haven’t even developed into useful bench players. They needed to make a move a did it before they start off horrible and lose the season.

  You should throw the Jazz in there too, they should be bad as all their young players start to get playing time, now they have the most potential of those teams to be surprisingly not terrible. they let al jefferson and paul milsap go for free, which I think they might regret. I think they should have traded them and got at least a few picks in return.

ironically, i think the MIP i think will come down to either Evan Turner or Eric Bledsoe as well. maybe with James Anderson having an outside chance.

That’s a great trade for the Wizards. Gortat is a solid NBA center and those always cost a lot so getting it for Okafor and a first round pick is sweet.

  yeah but at the same time, thats a very valuable pick in one of the deeper and most anticipated draft class in some time. and gortat is an expiring so its not like the wizards will get him at a bargain price, theyll probably throw the same money to him as they would as an UFA.
  still though, marcin would be a good addition to the starting unit of washington. you just got to wonder if loosing that pick will bite them in the future despite having fairly young talent at the 1-2-3 spots.

Ehh @joewolf I think you’re jumping the gun. First we need to see them stay healthy and see how they mesh. But I do believe they’ll be better than the Cavs and I think it’s a great deal for the Wiz. I’m a Suns fan so I am no rooting for them to be the 8th seed in the east so we can get that 15th pick. This will also open up the door for Alex Len to get PT, which I’m not counting on being very productive but at least we will see what we got with the #5 pick. Kendall Marshall gets a new start as well but I’m sad to see Shannon go.

Oh don’t get me wrong I have little faith in the Knicks roster this year, but until I see the Wizards I’m not putting them ahead just yet, but you could be very well be spot on.

I thought the Wizards were already going to make the playoffs, but I don’t see how they miss it now. They just got an above average NBA Center for an injured player. I know they gave up their 2014 1st rounder, but if they do stay injured and miss the playoffs they get to keep the pick since it is top 12 protected and if they make the playoffs I do not think they are worried about not having the 16-20th pick if it means they are in the postseason.

What a great job Ryan McDonough has done so far. The Suns just got a little worse for this year, acquired another 1st rounder, and are now able to give Alex Len extended minutes. If he delivers with great picks in the draft (they might have up to 4 first round picks!), then he is easily a top 3 or 5 GM in the league despite just getting the job a few months ago.

It’s great to see the suns gm Ryan McDonough is active and is trying to improve his team but aside from tanking, what’s the plan? What are they gonna do with FOUR first round picks? That is NOT a good recipe for success, unless he is using them as assets. Having so many rookies can be a nightmare for the coaches. They will HAVE to land either Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker to make this work. That way, they can lure a couple solid free agents.

Also, Otto Porter has not been looking so great for being the number 3 pick in the draft. I would expect their ceiling this year to be #7 or #8 with a slightly under .500 record….

As a Suns fan I think we could have got less protection on the pick as I’d assume Washington were the team who made the offer. If they aren’t in the play offs then the odds are they keep the pick so I’d have wanted something like just top 5 protection on it. If the Suns are going all out to tank then fair enough but we could have got the same sort of deal for Gortat later on.
I’ll be interested to see if the Suns look to buyout Okafor ASAP or if they wait and see if he returns and what trade interest he might bring near deadline day. If he gets brought out and signs for veteran’s minimum somewhere then a contender could have a bargain.
The Wizards get a fit frontcourter to replace Okafor and if they make the play offs they won’t worry too much about the pick and have good protection on it just in case.
The Suns have options in next year’s draft which will be very useful and if it is as deep as we think then later picks could also be good.
Alex Len will get increased playing time and can develop more perhaps.
Overall I like the trade but wanted less protection on the pick.

Wolves 8th in the west(love-martin such winners, petkovic such a defensive beast, rubio such a shooter…), lakers 10th (kobe proud of him), wizards 6-8th (depending on jennings, bynum and néné), suns top 3 guaranteed with the sixers and probably the jazz, pacers not that good this year in RS like 4th in the east, 9-10th in the league.

And good for the wiz, gortat is now overrated after he has been underatted(nash gone, the 15-10 gone with him).
But he’ll be an even better pick and roll partner for wall(beal also knows, he knows everything), runs the floor like a gazelle, rebound( nene and seraphin are weak, okafor would have been really missed), better FT shooter so he’s not affraid of the touches, can shoot a 12-14 footer decently, allow néné to operate in the high post, where he’s really good(drives-assists ala point center), allow the hustlers(booker-vesely) to play the 4, allow harrington as a floor spacer too, wall-gortat…3 3pts shooters, 5 running mens…
A good insurance for nene (so injury prone), with nene-gortat-seraphin-booker-harrington-vesely you can really handle the season, an injury or 2 here or there in the frontcourt.
He will fit in the mentality, the flow of the game, of their game…
Last year they lacked health, depth and scoring…gortat-maynor-porter-harrington and a brand new beal aka the real deal.
They’ll ball and i’ll watch.
