aamir543ParticipantVia Marc Stein’s twitter. This is a solid signing for the Mavs, but their still not championship contenders and will be fighting for the 7th seed because the West is just so stacked. But with Dirk potentially taking a hometown discount next off-season and having a lot of cap space, they could make a splash then. But this will keep them competitive for the time being, and if they can find a way to make it click, they could surprise us.

CodySLCParticipantNot a bad consolation price for the Mavs after they’ve missed out on so many over big name players.

CavFanPRParticipantJose and Monta is not a bad backcourt but they’ll have problems defensively.

CavFanPRParticipantBUT! Monta finally gets to play alongside a pass first guard. He’s always had to play with combo guards troughout his career (Baron Davis, Steph Curry and Jennings). He’ll have the chance to be the primary scorer and play off the ball. He’ll succeed in Carlisle’s system.

CavsFan07ParticipantI’m not a huge fan of it, personally.
Can he score? Yes. Can he defend? No. And it’s not like Dirk or Calderon are good defenders. So I guess I hope Marion is ready to take more defensively responsibility (as if he didnt have enough) because this is a bad defensive unit.
And now when they try to pursue a big name free agent next season they’ll have 17-18 million invested in Monta-Calderon and whatever Dirk decides to take. Won’t be anywhere near enough to recruit two max free agents as was once their publically stated plan.

HotSnotParticipantAgreed,
YUCK to this signing. Monta is not a chmapionship piece. The only reason to sign him to this deal is if you believe you can also trade it later.
I’ve seen Ellis do some amazing things on the court… but so did Iverson. Neither knew how to play championship ball while involving teammates.
This also makes me wonder, Ellis or Mayo when factoring in their respective new contracts? Not saying I’d want either player but Dallas seems to have given up a cheaper version of who they just signed.

esperanzafleet69Participantin all honesty, the best FA’s next season are all on the heat or lakers. i doubt anybody leaves the heat, and kobe probably wont go anywhere.
basically that leaves carmelo, paul pierce, and some restricted FA’s.
basically they’re looking at paul pierce, pau gasol, zbo, carmelo (IF he uses his ETO), rudy gay, or some restricted FA’s like john wall, greg monroe, or cousins.
i actually dont think next years FA class will be all that great, simply because i think the heat will stay together.

HobbyOGParticipantummm…he opted out of a 11 million dollar contract to get 30 mil. I would consider that longer term.

220ParticipantPlayers can’t get 6 year deals anymore. The longest a player can do is 5 years if he re-signs with his current team or 4 if he signs with a different team.

Chilbert arenasParticipantI believe he fired his agent since he wasn’t getting the offers he wanted. 3 years 30 million is the best he should be able to get. It’s David West type money.

JNixonParticipantThis is a desperation move from Dallas IMO.
They have had a bunch of cap space for the last 2 free agent classes. And both times they havent got the guys they have wanted. This year they wanted CP3 and Dwight Howard, and got neither. When they didnt get who they wanted they should’ve just looked to rebuild, because none of the guys after Paul or Howard were going to make them a contender in the West. Especially since Bynum went to the Cavs. Ellis is a scorer, but he isnt a teammate really. But he has the name recognition of a high level guy. He is going to make the Mavs good enough to compete for the playoffs as a 8th seed, or maybe 7th, but they are still going to need to rebuild to contend probably. And all this did was prolong their rebuilding process IMO. They just got too antsy with the amount of cap space they had and went after Ellis it seems. But they are still at a crossroads.

Bmore_DCParticipantI like it…the Mavs needed some fire power…he will give them 20+ points a game, along with Dirk its a decent 1-2 punch…
They will be horrible on defense but, youre right, its slightly a desperation move. But most FA signings are…

HitsterParticipantMonta Ellis is a good scorer but not much else, it’s hardly a major franchise type signing and if you look at him replacing Mayo for $2 million a year more is it much of a value for money upgrade. Calderon is a quality pass first PG but you’d need a couple of major stars for him to feed to really say he’d be on a likely contender.
I do wonder if Dallas may also be looking post Dirk era and then rebuild but in the meantime they are looking to stay in contention without going overboard on salaries to keep Dirk and the fans fairly happy. After they won the title in 2011, I would not say Mark Cuban lost interest but he has taken his foot off the pedal and with tougher luxury taxes he is perhaps favouring a more cautious approach.
Also Dallas are looking to keep some space for the 2014 FA market.

khaled_a_dParticipantIt isn’t a bad move tbh ,Contending? give me a break
every Mavs fan knows that we aren’t gonna be a contender if D12 isn’t coming ,even Dirk admitted it in some interview (I think with German newspaper of some site) that there goal now is to reach the play offs
This team has some decent defenders like Marion ,Harris if we actually got him (will have surgery ,deal canceled but both parties remain highly interested) and now some scoring
we aren’t done ,if we got Dalembert and some good role players and Donnie and RC are actually good in getting good role players we can reach play offs, ultimate target will be to be top 10 teams and give our pick to OKC so that pick doesn’t hunt us if we decide to rebuild in 2018 ,that might be possibility now
Dirk is here ,we aren’t gonna trade him as a matter of loyalty so best to do is just make the best out of his career with some more play off appearances0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/12/2013 - 2:42pm #819622

CynthiaParticipantWhy all the Monta hate? He’s got to land somewhere. Every time someone makes a post about him maybe signing for a team it gets blasted.
He has his flaws, I get that, but he’s still one of the best scorers in the league. He deserves a starting job, and deserves decent money. The Mavs struck out big time in free agency, but this is still a good signing for them, I’m also very interested to see how he plays with a true PG like Calderon for a change.

lockdownDI think Rick and Cuban pampering him will get the best out of him. I think he will have his best season ever.
The Mavs get the most out of players.
….
….
(did some research)
Statistically speaking…Darren Collison; better w/ the Mavs than at IND
OJ Mayo: better w/ the Mavs than at Mem.
Ian Mahimi: a little better w/ the Mavs than IND
Vince Carter: Better % than 2 years ago at Pho.0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/12/2013 - 7:29pm #819704

benny15ParticipantI like it for the mavs. They’re not really breaking the bank for him and got a very good and proven scorer in the league. I see this acquisition closer to the Jason terry trade from before where in he was brought in as a starter and be the second scorer of the team but was moved eventually to the bench where he thrived in that role.

scootover7ParticipantI like this signing as well. Did they get CP3 and Dwight? No. Is Ellis a defender no. Ellis can provide you with some scoring which would help the Mavs out. I think teams are still going to focus on Dirk because he can still score and is the leader on the team. I think Ellis is going to be open more. Calderon is a pass first point guard and I can’t wait to see how Ellis does with a pass first point guard. While Dallas didn’t have the greatest off season moves they got Jose Calderon, Devin harris, Monta Ellis and I heard maybe Greg Oden. So I hope and wish the best for Dallas. I hope Monta plays great and Greg Oden comes back and not be injured becoming a beast.
