Sewok15ParticipantMCW just had another horrendous shooting game going 3-16 from the field and 0-4 from 3. Reggie Jackson didn’t even play for OKC but Lamb made up for it by going for 32 points. MCW has had games of 3-16, 4-20 and even the game he scored 26 points he was 8-23 and 0-6 from 3. In 3 games in Orlando he has such an abysmal 15-59 for 25.4% and 1-13 from 3 for 7.6%. The main knock I had on him coming in was he couldn’t shoot a lick and teaming him up with Evan Turner easily makes them the worst shooting backcourt in the league.
More surprisingly Trey Burke has also struggle for Utah. I thought he would play much better but shot 5-15 yesterday and 1-12 on Sunday. The hideous shooting from Trey isn’t as concerning considering he has already proven he can shoot the ball from distance. I am worried about Burkes ability to finish at the NBA level because his relentless attack of the basket was key to his success at UM. If he isn’t able to finish there will be no need to foul him or play heavy help defense and get him easy assists.
Do you think it is just nerves for these guys or do you see this continuing as they compete for starting spots this season?

druneave3ParticipantThe knock on MCW has always been his shooting ability but I have loved the way he has played. Great passer and love the effort he gives throughout the game and on defense. He has really shown me a lot more desire to win and that he is into the game more than I saw at Syracuse. He and Olynyk have been the biggest surprises for me so far.

providencefriars1ParticipantPeyton Siva has been the best rookie PG so far but even with his struggles Carter-Williams looks the part of a good starting PG. Siva will be a good backup PG and I have been really impressed with his decision making thus far. Pressey has shown some flashes and Neto had a good game today. Burke has been awful

druneave3ParticipantMost scouts were worried about his size and that seems to be his problem early on so far. Even struggling with ball pressure and handling, plus his shot isn’t falling for him. Should be a solid back up but I have always been leery of his abilities to be a lead guard, mainly because of that size.

princejamesParticipantYou can’t let summer league be a determining factor for how well first round picks will play during the NBA Regular Season.
For example:
In the 2008 NBA Draft:
1. Derrick Rose struggled in the summer league, throwing lazy passes, reading the defense incorrectly, having a lot of turnovers, and was a very inconsistent shooter and poor finisher around the rim. But when the NBA Regular season began he ended up being the rookie of year because of how well he played during the NBA Regular season2. Jerryd Bayless played great in the summer league, he scored at a high level, he shot the ball well and finished shots around the rim at a very high level. He was dunking on defenders at making great decisions in the open court. He actually won rookie of the month during the summer league. But when the NBA regular season began. He could barely get off the bench for the next 2 1/2 years.
I’ve learned not to put to much thought in how rookies play in the summer league. It’s an adjustment period for rookies. And some will naturally struggle early on as they learn to adapt to the NBA Style of play and enhanced skill level from the players that play in the NBA
Also the best, most skilled, and most talented rookies will always adapt and get better when their able to make the needed changes in their style of play that will help them consistently play at a high level when they are competing against the best players in the NBA

thunderjerkParticipantDidn’t Kyrie shoot like 25% at summer league AFTER winning ROY?

lakeshow22ParticipantKyrie Irving has never played in a summer league game before. His first year there was the lock out and last year he broke his hand the first day of practice

MkadozaParticipantBoth point guards are struggling with what scouts predicted would be their problems as druneave pointed out: MCW lacks strength and range, and Burke lacks strength and explosion. Combine that with the fact that they are now playing with grown men and not 18-22 year old’s, and the difference in the opponents strength only exacerbates the problem.
Trey Burke is going to have to learn that floater all small guards have (CP3, Parker, even taller PGs like Curry and Irving) to make up for the fact that hes not a Rose or Westbrook who can break people down at will. Since most NBA pgs are about as quick as him, if not more so, he has to find a way to create space for his shot and drive, or else defenders will just muscle him into bad shots.
MCW needs to learn how to shoot from beyond 12 feet. Its just that simple. His lack of strength is off set by his shiftiness and size, but his inability to shoot makes those tools null and void, as defenders will just sag off to prevent his drive.
I like both players natural instincts and IQ’s, and they have both shown flashes of being quality players. Experience and NBA strength training with certainly alleviate many of their issues. But for now, it’s fine that they struggle. Call me when they’re pulling an Austin Rivers midway through the season.

Sewok15ParticipantDerrick Rose and Kyrie Irving were obvious #1 picks….MCW wasn’t even top 10 in a fairly weak draft. I am not just basing my concern off the 3 summer league games. I haven’t been high on him at any point in his career and while I liked the direction the Sixers went with rebuilding, I wasn’t thrilled about either of the guys they got in Noel and MCW. I like their potential but I don’t see either of them ever being consistent scorers in the NBA.

HobbyOGParticipantMCW has a nice shot, just not going in..I wouldn’t worry eventually after a year or two his shot will go in, I’ve been impressed with his distributing skills and setting his teammates up.

vulture711ParticipantTough for point guards. You have 3 days of practice with guys you never played with and then go play games – no chemistry, the games feel rushed. Terrible shots, loads of turnovers. Guys who look good are usually dudes who can stroke it and active bigs

ThepessimestParticipantThe struggles mentioned are very accurate. MCW is struggling with his shot and Burke is struggling with finishing over length…
There is an adjustment period. And success in the summer league does not mean you will be great just like struggling doesn’t mean you will be bad.
I am more watching things like:
A) Can you get to the spot to get your shot off and not necessarily if it goes it.
B) Are you improving each game.
C) Are you adjusting to the speed of the game. The box score isn’t as important during summer. It’s about getting used to being a pro.

aivsdirkParticipantagree with prince james. Plus if you really watched trey burke at michigan he started out a lot of games shooting then driving. Once he made a couple shots the defender had to press up on him making it easier drive past with clearer shots and wider passing lanes. Also his pull up in your face jumper is nice. I feel like in summer league he is really forcing the dribble drive. He hasnt been taking enough jumpers like i thought he would. Maybe he is trying to prove some critics wrong about being able to finish and hes forcing the issue but thats assumptions. The real test is once you hit the league. He might just be waiting on real competition, but then again thats my assumption either way burke just be ready once you step on the nba court day1 of the regular season
