bozman11ParticipantI read an article about the biggest busts in draft history and Kwame seems to take the thrown in most top ten lists. However, a lot of “busts” don’t make it because of other reasons; injuries, addictions etc. I’m thinking of guys who didn’t quite live up to expectations or didn’t make it in the league not due to lack of talent or effort. So a few guys that I can think of off the top of my head are: Shaun Livingston, Jay Williams, Dajuan Wagner, Darius Miles, Sam Bowie, Greg Oden, Len Bias, Hank Gathers (last two are extreme cases) I don’t consider these guys busts because all of them were plagued or bothered by bad injuries. I welcome you to add to this list- guys who could definitely play but their time was cut short.

Chilbert arenasParticipantYeah Len Bias and Hank Gathers on that list is kinda ridiculous. But as an LMU alum it pains me to say that Bo Kimble is certainly up there with biggest busts.

Anton123ParticipantLet’s go super-old-school!
Bob Boozer – one time all-star paicked ahead of Bailey Howell and Wilt Chamberlain!0- Posted on: Sun, 06/23/2013 - 8:11pm #804181

ItsVictorOladipoParticipantHe wasn’t picked ahead of Chamberlain. Wilt had already been selected as a territorial pick.
Also Boozer played 11 seasons in the league, most of them as a starter, and finished his career with 14.8 PPG and 8.1 RPG. I wouldn’t really call him a bust.

ChrispyParticipantHe died DURING a college game. He never even lived until the draft… How old are you, exactly? Len Bias was dead less than 2 days after the draft. Livingston, Bowie and Oden had huge injuries that unfairly sidetracked their careers. How about Darko? How about Olowokandi? How about Pearl Washington? Plenty of real busts, not just sad deaths or injuries. Gathers? Really?

bozman11ParticipantI’m 20, and if you read the post entirely; you would see that I followed gathers and bias’ names by “(extreme cases)”. I’m not calling them busts, I was asking the draftnet community about guys who’s playing careers were cut short. Examples of careers cut short by death: bias, Gathers, petrovic, Fernando Martin, reggie Lewis. I was looking for injuries, drug addictions or legal situations that derailed careers. Before you go ahead and imply something ignorant you should chill out and go to another thread if your not contributing anything useful.

ChrispyParticipantSay what you mean, then. Don’t expect others to be able to infer your subtext. That is ignorant. I wasn’t being an a$$. As it was written I was confused that a “draft bust”list included Gathers and Bias. I simply pointed out that Gathers never even lived to the draft. Don’t be so sensitive. I’m a fan, your’re a fan. Take your own advice and chill. And grow a spine.

ropeParticipantChris Washburn comes to mind, due to drugs. He was a million dollar talent with a 50 cent head.
Darko makes the list for just being lazy. He hung around and made quite a bit of money, but come on. He wasted some much talent.
Bowie and Oden weren’t the first big man busts in Portland. Look up Larue Martin. Now that was a stretch.

ItsVictorOladipoParticipantI think most people on this thread seem to be missing the OPs thought process (although it wasn’t that clear in the opening post either). I’m pretty sure he’s specifically thinking of great prospects who didn’t pan out due to injuries, sudden death, addictions etc. Not guys who didn’t make it because they had poor work ethic, low basketball IQ or just weren’t very good players period.
“Guys who could definitely play but their time was cut short”
2 guys that pop into my head are guys that made a few all-star teams but should have been All-Time greats; Marvin Barnes who made the ABA all-star team in his first two years in the league but then his career was derailed due to drug use, and other off court troubles (his first year in the NBA in 1976-77 he missed time because he was in prison). Also Maurice Stokes who was an amazing do-everything player for 3 years in the late 50s but was paralyzed during his third season in the league.

CAROLINA BLUE NICKParticipantI was too young to remember him play but what about Bobby Hurley? He is the NCAA All time assist leader, a 2 time ncaa champion, and NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding player. However he was in a serious car accident his rookie year. Crazy how him and Jay Williams both were in accidents that derailed their careers and they both were probably the best point guards to come out of Duke. At least the Dookies have Kyrie Irving to look forward too…hopefully
