What are your top ten player rankings for each position based on skill level, upside, and potential?

My top 10 and top 5 explanations.

1. PG – Trey Burke – The only reason I have Burke over Smart is his range and more refined offensive game. I feel Burke is a more well rounded point guard and further on in his development. I could see Burke being a guy who could put up 17 ppg and 8 apg at the next level.

2. Marcus Smart – I love Smart’s toughness, physicality and intagables, but I don’t think he’ll ever be more than a 14 or 15 ppg scorer at the next level. He’s also a guy who could play some two because he’s not a pure point quite yet and he’s a well built 6’4”. I could see Smart being a guy who could get 15/5/5 pretty early in his career. I realize why he is so covetted, because he’s a winner, but if I want a PG, I still go Burke.

3. MCW – MCW is a step below Burke and Smart, in my opinion, but he’s a unique specimin and a guy I think is worth the risk in the late lottery or mid 1st round. A 6’7” PG with his kind of passing skills could be very dangerous in the right place, and even if he doesn’t become what some may seem, taking him in the 11-16 range is still worth the risk.

4. Eric Green – A guy I like, but I think he’s pretty much a sure fire 2nd rounder is Eric Green. He’s a combo, but he’ll line up at the point because of his size and he can flat out put the ball in the hole. The backup PG is being filled more and more by combo guards and Green, to me, is a guy like an Eddie House who can come off the bench for 10 or 15 minutes and fill it up. I’d give him a look at 25-30, but I feel he’ll go about 10 spots lower.

5. Isaiah Canaan – If I’m a GM, I start giving Canaan a look in the 25-35 range. I think he could be a reliable backup close to right off the bat, like another small college PG, Eric Maynor. Despite a different build, there games in college were very similar and I could see Canaan having an easy transition to a team’s backup PG as a rookie. I don’t think his ceiling is very high, but I think he’s a pretty sure fire shot of a 10 year backup and I the guys I have ranked behind him have a higher chance of fizzling out.

1. Ben McLemore – No one is thrilled about the #1 pick this season, and I can’t really blame them. That being said, Ben McLemore is a great pro prospect. With his occasional lack of offensive aggressiveness, it’s easier to imagine him as a 3rd or 2nd option screen shooter than a go to #1 option, but I offense aside, I think Ben will be a very very good perimeter defender. His athletic ability is at the elite level and he has almost prototypical size for his position, with a coulple years in an NBA weight room he’ll be closer. The way I look at it, is even if Ben never asserts himself, he’ll be a 15-17 ppg scorer off his shot and athletic ability alone, and a guy who can lock down the guy guarding him. If he does assert himeself or even if he becomes one of the league’s top 2nd options, you have a 19-23 ppg scorer who is locking down his man on the other end. The quesiton in his assertiveness is valid, but he’s still the best SG prospect in this class.

2. Victor Oladipo – Oladipo does a lot of the same things Ben does, but doesn’t have quite the stroke. I could easily see him locking down his man, getting in transition and hitting open shots, but I don’t feel his ceiling is as high, but I think 3rd option offensively is pushing it for him. He takes smart shots, gets out on the break and can hit a college 3, but I have a hard time seeing him as more than a 15 ppg scorer in the NBA.

3. C.J. McCollum – I’ve been high on CJ for a couple years now, and I think he has the making of a high volume elite 6th man type player. He is crafty, can score in just about any way possible and has the mentaility and confidence to do so, as well as a good feel for finding open teammates due to his role as a primary ball handler for 4 years. He’s a proven college player who’s game will translate and I could see him playing a very similar role to Jamal Crawford at the next level.

4. Shabazz Muhammad – Shabazz can score, and I think he’ll do just that in the NBA. Probably not at the 20 ppg level, but I could see Shabazz getting 16 ppg at some point his career if the circumstances were right. That being said, I think there is a possibility he won’t stick. I tried to watch as much of UCLA as possible this year, and he often bullied his way to points, especially on the break, and I just won’t be able to do that in the NBA. I still think he’ll be able to crash the offensive glass, where he gets some putpacks due to his aggressive nature, but he may end up playing the 3, and his athletic ability at that NBA position is sub par. He gives you little else besides scoring, and I personally would give him a look in the 13-15 range, but I don’t like him as a top 10 pick.

5. Tim Hardaway Jr. – Hardaway Jr. is a guy who I think could be a solid starter for 10 years. He has very good size, length and athletic ability for an NBA shooting guard, and he’s pretty well rounded with the execption of the fact I feel his range could be better. He reminds me a lot of Gerald Henderson and I feel he could just be a solid shooting guard in the league.
