Well, I will just post the link as opposed to the whole story, but I urge you all to read it as it is really well done. Focuses on the 1990 LSU/Loyola Marymount game, along with pointing out how much pace has changed in college basketball since that time:

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/luke_winn/10/22/LSU-LMU-scoring/index.html

As always, Winn gives some really interesting stats, in this case pertaining to the death of break-neck speed basketball in the NCAA. The LSU/Loyola Marymount game was always a game of legend. 17-year old Shaq put up a triple double (20 points, 24 rebounds, 12 blocks!):

Hank Gathers, who as the article stated unfortunately passed away 29 days later, scored 48 points after having his first 5 shots either deflected or blocked by Shaq. The final box score is amazing, 148-141 LSU victory. Along with Shaq and Gathers, you had: Bo Kimble with 32/11 for LMU, Chris Jackson aka Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf with 34/9 assists and Stanley Roberts with 21 points (10-10 FG)/12 boards in 21 minutes. Just really fun, incredible basketball that Paul Westhead constructed during his time at Loyola. On February 3, 1990, Dale Brown played his game and luckily had the necessary pieces to beat him at it.

I wasn’t even close to being born when he was playing but from what I’ve seen, Gathers could’ve been one of the best players in the 90’s. I saw in one of the videos that Spoelstra was actually playing in the where Gathers died and you can actually see him in the video (just thought I’d toss that out).

Can’t believe Shaq was only 17 during that time as well, he’s just a flat out beast.

I have this game on tape, passed down from my father, the first official thing we watched together that I could understand. Chris Jackson, just wow. This also doesn’t mention Vernel Singleton and Geert Hammink. Just wow, my favorite college basketball team of all time. Coach Dale Brown, just amazing.

As an LMU alum I very much appreciate this thread. When I was a freshman there I watched this game on ESPN Classic in my dorm room.

Can’t say the same for everyone, guess some people (or person) missed the point. Just thought it was a well done article and I was always fascinated by Westhead’s system. Must have been a pretty awesome time to have been a part of Loyola Marymount community, with the exception of the devestating early passing of Hank Gathers.

The name of the article. Think he was talking about scoring volume and number of possessions. But, guess that wasn’t news to you…..

Are you one of the "haters" from Dave Chappelle’s sketch? Because honestly, you are the most negative poster I have ever seen. Have really never seen a troll so obvious and with so little to offer. I am guessing this is what you aspire to be:

I wish you can just stop hating people and maybe try to offer something, but the above is your attitude. Without the levity of it being a comedy sketch.

The LMU program has been pretty bad since. The Gathers family sued the athletic program and they lost a lot of money and couldn’t build on their success during that time.  Also it’s understood that the ghost of Gathers haunts the gym. I worked in the athletic program for two years and people would say if you were there alone late at night you could hear a basketball bouncing and could never find the source.

Oh, and every poster on here. For no good reason. If you do not like what I write, don’t read it. You certainly did read the article or you would not have written the ignorant stuff you have in this (and every) post. That is all, carry on trolling and have a nice life.

I am surprised to learn you know how to read

There is always a chance to go back to school

Spelling things right can sometimes be "kool"

If I am rubber and glue, that is a strange combination

Every post you make would give most families humiliation

You say you don’t hate, though truly seem to

I don’t hate, just feel sorry for you

Your mind is a terrible thing to waste

So go read a book, you can’t be helped in this place
