Look Kobe’s whole career was nothing more than an Iverson hiding behind all-star bigman..

Tonight 31 points 29 minutes 34 point loss..

Kobe was an over hyped defender his whole career and got celebrity status first team all defensive awards.. Gilbert Arenas from 2005-2007 averaged over 40ppg against him interesting why?

Put it this way Gasol and Howard DNP tonight.. If they did Kobe’s defense would have been great and the Lakers would have won because it is Kobe’s team lol…

Kobe is great but does not dominate every game on both ends like mj did in the bulls uniform days…

I think we all know what Kobe has accomplished, and we also know that Kobe is a proven champion. Furthermore it is just a pre-season game and not much should be judged based on that.

However, with that being said you have a valid point. I wouldn’t say he’s a worthless big man rider. What I will say is that at this stage of his career people should seriously consider what it means to be an MVP candidate every year. Also I think we all know by now Kobe has always been an overhyped defender. So thats not exactly a secret, unless you are in denial.

I guess I’m in denial then because during his prime, Kobe was the best defender at his position and one of the elite defenders in the NBA. He didn’t become an overrated defender until late in his career when he was rewarded for what he’d done in the past.

He’s never been the defender Jordan was, but not too many are. Even Jordan took plays off and didn’t defend the best offensive player during the late part of his career.

The Lakers are 0-4 in the pre-season. Other than shake off rust, look at the roster and practice the new offense, they haven’t taken these games seriously. They’ve been blown out every game with or without Kobe. Even when Nash and Gasol have been on the floor, they’ve been blown out.

Kobe had 31 tonight, but 23 were in the 3rd when he decided to punish Gordon Hayward just because. The game was already a blow out.

im not saying kobe wasnt a great defender in his prime, one of the best, but i cant say he was the best when he was in his prime.  There were guys like Doug Christie and Bruce Bowen to name a couple that i feel were just as good as kobe at that time.

Bruce Bowen ok but Mrs Christie. and either way these are one way players with limited offense on a good day. How can you compair them to Kobe. They had one job to do its easier to concentrte you r entire energy/focus on that if thats it.

I agree with verything except that Kobe is a worthless big man rider. That’s just not fair, He’s definitely one of the best players of all time. HOWEVER, I do think his defense has ALWAYS been overhyped. Very good defender, but never was the best at his position. Even though the way he put his comments were kind of harsh, they do have some truth to em. Kobe, like most championship winning guards, have rode the coat tail of a great big man. That doesn’t mean that Kobe wasn’t the best player on his team or anything, it’s just saying that he never won chip without the luxury of all star/superstar big men.

And in response to BallerWay, it was not necessary to bring up Doug Christie and Bruce Bowen’s lack of offensive skills when the statement was clearly comparing all of their defensive abilites. IMO.

At the end of the day, Kobe is overhyped as a defender. He’s still one of the all-time greats and still has a superstar big man and will retire that way. P.S. That game was a scrimmage for the Lakers.

It’s a f**king preseason game. Kobe is not Jordan. Jordan didn’t even play preseason ball after he hit 30.

damn, he dropped 31 in 29 minutes on 10-18 shooting, just imagine how you would feel about him if he played bad, lol.

someonelse mentioned them as equally effective/superior defenders ( thats how I read, I may have been wrong). My point was that thats where they focused their energy all game while having less weight to carry on the offensive end. For good or for worse Kobe has always carried a high offensive load and still been a renoewd defender. Thats all.
