CodySLCParticipantWhen a player is drafted in the second round, especially in the mid to late second round, the expectations aren’t all to high. But sometimes teams find what most would consider to be a steal. Here’s my list of the 8 biggest second round steals in recent memory. I’m going to leave guys like Michael Redd, Gilbert Arenas, and Memo Okur off since they aren’t on a NBA roster as of now.
1. Monta Ellis- The Warriors found a star with the 40th pick in 2005. The 2007 most improved player, Ellis scored a career high 25.5ppg amd 2.2spg in 09-10, with a career scoring average of 19.5ppg.
2. Marcin Gortat- The 57th pick by the Magic turned out to be a great choice. Almost the last player selected in the 2005 draft, Gortat averaged a career best 15.4ppg and 10rpg last season with the Suns.
3. Paul Millsap- Millsap was selected 47th in 2006 by the Jazz. The undersized pf plays hard every night, and averaged 16.6ppg 8.8rpg and was 4th in the league in steals at 1.8per contest last season.
4. Marc Gasol- Picked 47th by the Lakers in 2007, Marc Gasol was later part of the package that sent Pau Gasol to the Lakers. Marc made his first all star team in 2012 averaging, 14.6ppg 8.9pgp and 1.9bpg last season.
5. Luis Scola- Was picked 56th in 2002 originally by the Spurs. In 2007 his rights were traded to Houston, and he didnt disappoint. Scola has averaged 14.5ppg and 7.7rpg for his career.
6. Carlos Boozer- Boozer was the 35th pick in 2002 by the Cavs. Origanlly thought to be a undersized 5 out of Duke, Boozer when healthy has devolped into one of the games better pf’s. The 2 time allstar has career averages of 17ppg and 9.9rpg.
7. Mo Williams- Mo another diamond in the ruff drafted by the Jazz with the 47th pick. (I guess its a good number for them) Mo has averaged 13.8ppg and 4.9apg for his career, and made the all star team in 2009.
8. Isaiah Thomas- Drafted with the very last pick in the second round (60th overall) by the Kings. Thomas would eventually take the starting job from Jimmer Fredette who was drafted 10th overall. Thomas averaged 11.5ppg and 4.5apg in only 25.5mpg as a rookie last season. And did it all standing at only 5"9.

goneParticipantI think you’re under rating Marc Gasol he affects the game in ways that don’t show up in boxscores but more importantly in the win column

CodySLCParticipantI didnt put them in order of importance. I think Marc Gasol is as important as any player on the Grizz.

torontoraptors10ParticipantYou can add Manu Ginobli to that list too.
Marcus Thorton is a productive 2nd round pick as well

SiggyParticipantDoes Ginobili not count as "recent memory"?
Where is Goran Dragic, Lou Williams, Marcus Thornton or Nikola Pekovic? I’d take them all over MoWill.

A Lil EnglishParticipantSigned in to say where the hell is Ginobili but got beaten to it.. The list could have been better with some of Siggy’s choices too
0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/30/2012 - 10:42am #717270

CodySLCParticipantGood point Ginobili should be on the list.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/30/2012 - 10:47am #717272
SiggyParticipantErsan Ilyasova belongs on the list too.

Ny2daDeathOFmeParticipantyeah i was wondering where he was. you cant mention productive 2nd round picks with out that man. he was the first person that came to mind when i seen the subject. good list though

The8thDeadlySinParticipantA list of 8 huh? I used to do that…

Lebron’s HairlineParticipantI’m pretty sure we will add to this list after watching all of this years second round picks play. Doron lamb, will Barton, Quincy miller and draymond green to this list soon

For_Never_EverParticipantHe said recent.
Manu Ginobli was drafted in 1999. I guess that is still recent to people.

llperezthe title is "2nd rounders in the league today". He also brings up michael redd as only being left out becasue he doesnt currently have a team and he was drafted just one year later then manu so i would say he just forgot about manu.

capecodderParticipant1999 is definitely recent to me…I’m 73

Mr. 19134ParticipantEven in recently Ersan, Dragic, Sweet Lou, Pekovic, Marcus Thornton would be top 4 with his play as of recent. Chandler Parsons. Glen Davis, Denadre Jordan just got a huge contract so he gotta be on the lists.
Quincey Miller is the one 2nd rounder from this draft that. feel people in 3 years will look back and say wow how in the world did he fall so low. Miller is a legit 6’10 with long arms, a versatile game yet a pure scorer at heart. If he would of stayed for his soph year he. would of no doubt been a top 3 pick. Has anybody saw him play recently? His athleticism is back and he put on 10 pounds of muscle.

BenchWarmerParticipantDeandre Jordan is a close miss. Look for him to be a double double player and defensive anchor with 60%+ fg.. Assuming he can put it together.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/30/2012 - 12:57pm #717292

JoeWolf1Goran Dragic has already shown he’s very productive in starters minutes. He averaged 18 ppg 8.4 rpg 3.5 apg and 1.8 spg on 49/38/84 % shooting. I look for him to have a big year in 2012-13 and he was a 2nd round pick.
He’s my favorite for 2012-13 MIP, I think he’s a borderline All-Star.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/30/2012 - 1:47pm #717296
shonu44ParticipantLandry Fields he just got some good money from Toronto and played well while in New York.
0- Posted on: Sun, 09/30/2012 - 1:55pm #717298

Ny2daDeathOFmeParticipantas a knick fan i really liked fields, he was a good all around player and a great glue guy but i dont think he has yet to have a season up to par with some of the guys being mention even though i do think he was a 2nd round steal.

omphalosParticipantWill Barton will be on this list in a few years.
Also, why are people mentioning Thornton so much? He’s an undersized chucker who can’t produce off the bench.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/30/2012 - 3:28pm #717305

MUbballfanParticipantGinobli and Ilyasova deserve to be on here
0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/30/2012 - 10:25pm #717341

ChoppyParticipantDetroit picked Mehmet Okur in the 40’s if I remember correctly. I think he’s still in the league and has been very productive over a long career, even if injuries and age have taken their toll recently.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/30/2012 - 10:34pm #717342

A Lil EnglishParticipantThe 1st paragraph explains why Okur was not included – he’s not signed at this moment.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/30/2012 - 11:19pm #717344

Jr. ROXASParticipantHow bout Glbert arenas? he was drafted just one year before boozer so i think it counts as "recent memory" I’d also include guys like Ariza and Varejao here
