N.C. State guard Rodney Purvis cleared to play by NCAA

Rodney Purvis’ long period of eligibility limbo has ended, and fortunately for him and N.C. State, it ended with clearance.

The star freshman guard has been waiting to hear if he could play for the past six weeks, ever since he was told he could not accompany his team to Spain in early August. The issue with Purvis was academic; the NCAA has been investigating his high school — Raleigh’s Upper Room Christian Academy. Purvis was a part of the school’s first graduating class.

Purvis was first cleared to attend classes at N.C. State last month, but he was not cleared to play until Monday afternoon. He was granted permission to play by the NCAA Committee on Initial Eligibility Waivers, according to the school.

"I’m really happy for Rodney," coach Mark Gottfried said in a statement. "It’s been a difficult situation and he’s handled the entire matter with class. Now he can move forward. I’d also like to thank the NCAA for its thoughtful consideration on this decision."

Said Purvis: "I’m really excited about the decision that the NCAA came to today. I appreciate the hard work of everybody involved and I’m looking forward to focusing on school and basketball."

Purvis, a 6-4 guard from Raleigh, is expected to contribute immediately for the Wolfpack, who return all of their key players from a team that reached the Sweet 16 last season. N.C. State is considered one of — if not the — favorite in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season, and this news only heightens expectations for the Wolfpack.

Awesome news for the NC State Wolfpack! Glad he is eligible, looking forward to seeing how his freshman year turns out. One of my favorite incoming recruits.

Good news. Excited to watch him, very talented, although I’m not a NC State fan. I really like Purvis.

Shabazz’ situation won’t be nearly as easy. The questionmarks surrounding Purvis had to do with academics and if his school met NCAA standards.  Even if wasn’t deemed eligible, he still wouldve been able to still play down the road. Shabazz’ issue is his amateur status.  This is a kid who the NCAA was warning suitors about during the recruitment process.  His recruitment was obviously dirty, the question is how dirty and how much they were able to cover up. Shabazz took an obscene amount of unofficial visits, something like 15-16, not including UNLV, which were all supposed to be paid for by he and his family.  There is no way they paid for all of them out of pocket.  Then there’s the whole Adidas issue with them possibly funneling money to his family. It’s very possible that Shabazz could be found permanently ineligible if the benefits he received exceeded a certain amount.

yes I know Shabazz’s problems are about connections and benefits and etc, but I’m speaking in general abut players currently ineligible, I want to see Shabazz play this year.

An article in which I credit the original authors and source? I also post most of the articles in the "News" section of the site. When there is news, it is usually reported from somewhere. When you credit the source of this news, I do not exactly know how that is copying it, but I guess you have your own thoughts on the matter. So glad you add to the conversation rather than, you know, being a gigantic troll offering nothing.
