Pistol Pete. The PelicanParticipantWhy does no one believe Thomas Robinson can be Blake Griffin type of player?
When it comes to measurables, there is an inch and 4 pound difference between the two, they both have really explosive games, Blake only measured a 35.5 inch vert at the combine, I think T-Rob will be around that or better. T-Rob has been improving his perimeter game, his dribbling an his jump shot, and he’s been able to score in the post in college, the same way Blake did; so why can’t his game transfer to the NBA like Blake’s did?
People keep comparing him to David West, David West has never been an explosive player, I know, I stay in Louisiana. I see some game similarities except the explosiveness and I think T-Rob will be one of the most explosive players in the draft. I also love his confidence. I know everyone saw the "Numbers Don’t Lie" statement.
Now I’m not saying he will put up Blake Griffin stats, just saying why does no one believe he can be a Blake Griffin type player. Like Blake Griffin Lite..

Chilbert arenasParticipantI’m a big T-Rob fan but he doesn’t have the ball handling that Blake does and is slightly shorter. Also Blakes vertical does him no justice in terms of what he does on the floor. Remember OJ May had a 40in vert but it doesn’t always translate. Robinson is great finishing with both hands at the rim off the dribble but I don’t see him as being as much of a focal point on the offensive end as Blake has been. I think Robinson will be much better defensivly than Blake is right now and the rebounding should be around the same due to Robinsons no-stop motor. I have more faith in Robinsons mid-range jumper and free throw shooting than Blake. So you have a good point.

RUDEBOY_ParticipantThe person i think he most compares to is Brandon Bass..I see why people might say he’s like Blake .Similar built, great in transtion…But Robinson doesnt have that superstar pedigree, like Blake..If a team selecting in the top 5 and looking for the next Griffin..He’s going to be a bust..But if you’re a team drafting 5 thru 10,looking for a guy that can possible give you a double double on anightly basis in 2 years he’s your guy..

Pistol Pete. The PelicanParticipantYeah, I’m measuring their games strictly in terms of explosiveness, and with T-Rob’s mid-range and free throw shooting it could even out his offensive production. And you are correct it always doesn’t translate, but I think from seeing T-Rob play in college his explosivenss will. When he dunks or goes for rebounds..
I don’t think he has sneaky athleticism like Oj Mayo or Brandon Roy, he has flat out athleticism.

butidonthavemoneyYou should never draw conclusions from the athletic combine. No good will come of that. According to the combine, Luke Babbitt is more athletic than Griffin. Nonsense.
Anyway, there are similarities between the two players and the comparison has been made quite a few times before. Never seen anybody actually say he is incapable of playing a "Blake Griffin Lite" role in the NBA.

WizardofOzParticipantI think he’s a poor man’s Blake Griffin. Griffin isn’t the most polished player, but he was more skilled and a better passer at the same stage.

Memphis MadnessParticipantWell, Blake was a LOCK as a number one pick coming out of college. T Rob really isn’t a lock as even the 2nd or 3rd pick. … they have sort of the same game though. High motor, athleticism, dunks, inside scoring, and rebounding. Blake has short arms and T Rob has a nice wing span so I think that favors T Rob on the next level. T Rob took his team to the title game which you have to really give him credit for. He had a great college basketball season last year.
If T Rob brings better defense, a mid-range jumper, shot blocking skills, and intangibles than Blake Griffin does then I think that T Rob can be a more well-rounded player even if Blake Griffin has more natural talent.
I can definitely see the comparison though.
T Rob should be good with John Wall and Nene in Washington or DeMarcus Cousins in Sacramento. I also think that he wouldn’t necessarily be a bad fit with Kemba and Bismack in Charlotte. Bismack is a shot-blocking center and T Rob is another athletic big who is more of a 4. Those two along with Byron Mullens would be a nice 3 guard big man rotation. I can really see that team getting out on the break with Kemba Walker at point and Gerald Henderson on the wing.
It looks like the Bobcats are a possible destination for T Rob at 2, but Drummond, MKG, and Harrison Barnes in the mix.

Pistol Pete. The PelicanParticipantYeah that’s what I was trying to say, "Poor Man’s Blake Griffin OR Blake Griffin Lite." If Thomas Robinson goes out and get whatever team he plays for 17 and 11 for his peak, that’s perfect. I think he can attain that.

mosdefParticipantAs a Kansas fan, I would bet that the person TROb sees himself the most like is Garnett cuz of the intensity. I think he is fine as an explosive player. I think coming in already has a better jumper and FT shot then Blake. Does he struggle with post moves? Sure he does but it has promise and when not effective he can lean on that faceup game. Someone once thought that TRobs career would mirror Kenyon Martin’s and I think thats fair. I actually think Blake has regressed as a player. Ive always thought Love was the better player and that gap is widening. Id actually want TRob more then Blake head up cuz I know TRob was coached by Danny Manning
I think TRob is an Allstar as long as he doesnt land in Charlotte cuz the team is really bad and will lack getting him the ball.

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantAnd this is why I believe the NBA Combine is over-blown.
"Why couldn’t Gerald Green be the next Kobe? He’s very athletic as Kobe once was."
0 - Posted on: Sat, 06/09/2012 - 9:41am #679076

Chilbert arenasParticipantI think TRob next to Cousins in Sac would be the best fit, that would be one big bad tough front line that would never back down to anyone. Wizards have enough young front court players, they need guard help.

Pistol Pete. The PelicanParticipantThat is an invalid comparison of the combine, and players abilities concerning T-Rob and Blake.
1. Kobe Bryant wasn’t KOBE BRYANT when he came into the league.
2. Gerald Green doesn’t have KOBE BRYANT’S work ethic.
3. There was a difference in skill.
4. Thomas Robinson is a skilled player with athletisicm.
5. Blake Griffin still has potenital but he is no where near a complete player. This post hasn’t been talking about just athleticism but skill also. Gerald Green’s skill level was never and will never be compared to Kobe Bryant but the argument can be made that Thomas Robinson actually does some vital things better than Blake Griffin, Blake almost lives just off of athleticism at this point.
6. Give me one person who questions Thomas Robinson’s character, passion, or work ethic, you won’t find anyone unless they are on yahoo, and we all know NO One listens to Yahoo Sports, they are always wrong in their assesments.

ivan138Participantgerald is ultra athletic , kobe was and still for his age is athletic. i spoke to russell westbrook and he wasnt happy with his 36inch vert and he told me they go one by one and sometimes players go cold and cant jump as high as when they are warmed up. but yeah its how you use your athleticism.blake uses it really well, travis outlaw not really, chase budinger not really, etc

benny15Participanti see where youre comming from, but the player Thomas Robinson who i think will be simillar to would be Kenyon Martin. Athletic, has that mid-range shot in his arsenal, likes to play physical and an under-rated defender. I see Robinson as having a long career ahead of him and if he stays healthy through out, will be the kind of guy whose described as invaluable to the team due to being a good individual and team defender without becoming an offensive liability.
0 - Posted on: Sat, 06/09/2012 - 10:32am #679089

TallmanNYCParticipantI don’t see the need to compare the two. Robinson isn’t as atheltic as Blake. Wait until you see the no-step jump. It won’t be as high as Blake’s. Robinson has a better J though, so there is no reason to think that Robinson can’t develop to be a starting PF in the NBA. Since NO is bad, he will probably start from day one. But he has work to do before he can help teams win games (and then work to do from there to get to the point where he could help a contender).

417basketballfanParticipantrobinson can shoot better then griffin. Not saying robinson is a great shooter. it just isn’t awful like griffins 15 footer
0 - Posted on: Sat, 06/09/2012 - 11:13am #679093

GrandmamaParticipantI don’t see Blake at all. He’s definitely much closer to David West in terms of skill set and ability. Someone mentioned Brandon Bass, which I can relate to as well, but not Griffin.

laarethekingsParticipantOk so he has West’s 15 foot shot in Bass’s body….. Done!
