OldSkoolBasketballParticipantIf the Clippers have kept the pick that got Irving for the Cavs and kept Eric Gordon, what do you think of the team?
Jordan
Griffin
Butler
Gordon
Irving
or the current Clippers roster?

nick5354ParticipantThinking back on this trade, it had a massive impact on the whole league.
If this never happened and that was the roster, there is no way they would have went after Chris Paul. In turn, lakers could have gotten him and that three way deal with the rockets would have most likely went through or a similar trade with another team.
The question is then asked how far the lakers would have went with Chris?
I like that core of Irving, Gordon, Griffin better. And don’t forgot they would have still kept Aminu.
Irving, to me, is a splitting image of Paul.
But who would have guessed clippers would have got the no1 pick anyway? 2.8%, come on! hahaha.

For_Never_EverParticipantI like if they could have gotten Irvin. Yes Chris Paul could be the best PG in the game. But can you still be considered the best when your injured all the time ? Irving has the same game as Chris paul, with 3 more inches of height. I been super high on Irvin.

ghettosermonParticipantI’m a huge Irving fan but to say he has Chris Paul game at this stage is ludicrous, you can’t compare their playmaking skills at this point, this is not to say he won’t reach that point one day possibly, but I think we are overrating him severly.

akhan786ParticipantPlaymaking wise he might not be at CP3’s level, but the argument could be made that he is a better offensive weapon already than CP3. There’s really no set way to guard him. He has the floater, mid range, bank shot, 3 point shot, dunks, and his crazy layups in his arsenal.
Considering all of the stuff he’s been through in the past year, you could make the case that Irving had a better rookie season than Chris Paul.

M-EazyParticipantIt would be fun watching them and OKC duke for years in the Western Conference.

IndianaBasketballParticipantHad the Clippers kept that pick, Stern wouldn’t have awarded them the top pick lol.

akhan786ParticipantI agree, the wouldn’t have give the Clips another #1 pick. so they would just give Cavs the #1 pick either way with the Cavs OWN pick but then the Cavs just wouldn’t have picked 4th.

Memphis MadnessParticipantNow, you have a few players on the Clippers in WIN NOW mode including Chris Paul, Caron Butler, and Reggie Evans. If Chauncey Billups resigns then he is in WIN NOW mode too.
But then you have younger guys with a 3-5 year window easily in Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan, Nick Young, and Bledsoe. Even Randy Foye can be put in this second group.
With CP3 and some of their older guys their window to be legit title contenders might only be a couple of years whereas Blake, Jordan, Young, and Bledsoe are young with another decade or more ahead of them.

rwd5035ParticipantThe comparisons from Chris Paul to Kyrie are ridiculous. Maybe Kyrie will reach Chris’ level, but Paul is the best PG in the game IMO (I know some will say Rose, but what I want from a PG is what Paul brings to the game.). "Chris Paul is hurt all the time" is one of the weirdest prevailing sentiments among basketball fans. The dude started 60 of 66 games this year, and has played 78+ regular season games in four of his six full 82 game seasons. Kyrie has been injured his first season in college (only played 8 his freshman year at Duke), and missed 15 games this season due to an injury. Chris has been hurt, but he’s not hurt "all the time."
Now, Kyrie has a good future, and I think he can become an elite PG in this league, but he’s not there now, and he’s not close to Chris Paul’s level. To suggest otherwise is crazier than Skip downplaying Lebron’s 40-18-9 as "filling up the stat sheet."
There is no future projections to be made with this thread, and the original post. How can we rate Gordon/Irving/Griffin on what they can be or could’ve been together, and compare them to this current Clippers roster? What if the Clips keep Paul, Griffin, and add another big piece in the future? What if they sign Eric Gordon back as a restricted free agent? There are too many unknown variables to talk about one groups future and compare it to what another group did.
I’m taking the Clippers with Chris Paul to do better than the Clippers without Chris Paul for this season. It’s the only comparison that can be made IMO.

aamir543ParticipantHindsight is 20/20, time is delicate, had that trade not have been made, he Clippers’ record would have been different, thus having a different amoung of ping pong balls, and thus probably not winning the lotto, assuming that they wouldn’t have been given the wining number because they were slotted differently.
