"Ironic" most people opinion Lebron is the greatest player in the League even if he doesn’t win a championship is also the greatest flopper.

I agree with MrWehbe– LeBron’s flopping in Game 1 on Saturday was pathetic!

not to remove the atention from James’ flopping, but i’ve been against flopping for a long time, but ive been trying to look at flopping at a different angle.

i was just wondering, how much different is flopping from gambling for a steal? i mean, if you flop and dont get a call, then youre leaving your man wide open to take an uncontested shot or open lane? if its like lebron’s scenario yesterday and the foul wasnt called, then your teamates are playing 4 on 5. i mean, players can do whatever they want on the court, they can sing a song or do a dance,  but its up to the refs to make the call or not.

is it all about image on why flopping is so looked down upon? its not breaking the rules, but exposing the lack of one. isnt that how techniques are made? by capitilizing everything you are allowed to do. taking every competitive edge you can. like i mentioned earlier, ive long disliked flopping. i just want to understand it more and see it from an unbiassed point of view.

It’s looked down upon because it’s viewed as a very cheesey and dishonorable thing to do, no it’s not against the rules it’s just…lame.

I’ve notice basketball games at a park all the rules and everything is translated and done like the NBA except for the act of flopping.

Sad… They should’ve put Blake Griffin and Chris Paul in the video to really make it fun.

at a park no, but on amature tourneys and leagues, i’ve seen it. its only done when there are refs involved. and as much as well hate it, it will never go away as long as its being effective. thats one thing that we cant deny. its like hack-a-shaq, it aint preety, but gets results. despite the negative reception from the fans who pay for the league to be alive.

Dennis Rodman as the king of flopping. The difference is that these guys are soft as charmin hen doing it. Rodman ould literally thro himself across the court or into fans to sale a flop. What ever happened to the NAB penalizing playersfor being caught flopping?

Flopping and stealing are totally different.

Flopping is trying to deliberatly manipulate the officials into giving you an advantage.

gambling for a steal is stupid, but the risk reward at least comes with a certain dignity that flopping has no place for.

but the end result is simillar. you either get the ball and the chance to go on a fast break or you get the ball and give your opponent a personall foul.

and flopping isnt always as fake as you see in highlights or videos. ive seen players flop because you know they can take the hit their opponent gave, but sold the call. i mean, why is it youre allowed to push or nudge a player out of position but its only a foul when done excessively? isnt a foul a foul? some of these guys wait for the impact then fly off even though they can hold their ground, but just because they are stronger doesnt mean the impact or hit wasnt there. i mean, does it actually say in the NBA rule book or where the lines are drawn?

JJ Barea has to be in the running for player who attempts the most flops per game. Somebody should make this a stat..

    FAPG: Flop Attempts Per Game

I’d be willing to put money down on Barea and Gasol.

I fear Lebron may actually sprain his neck one day after violently snapping his head back during one of his famous flops.  It looks even more ridiculous when he does it because he is built like a tank.

Do you guys think this is flopping?

Flopping to me is a tacitical advantage that most veterans use. But for the life of me I could never master the art. In soccer I remember as a kid I would get absolutely blasted in the box but instead of rolling around on the ground crying I would immmediately get up and continue to play. My coach would always get really pissed at me.

    @Benny15

I think selling the call and flopping are different. Flopping in my opinion is excessive blatant deliberate manipulation of officials and trying to force them to make a call. Selling a call in my opinion is more subtle to a point. Maybe I’m totally off base on this.

I believe fouls are usually defined as excessive contact so yes if someone is nudging a player excessively they should get a foul, but to say that everytime someone is fighting for position should end with a player getting a foul is taking physicality out of the game all together.

you are exactly right when you say just because they are stronger, doesnt mean the hit wasnt there. I agree, there probably is alot of contact, but when a stronger player goes flying, typically they are flopping. you essentially strengthened the point.

I get that flopping is part of the game, it is in a way like gambling for a steal in that there is a certain risk/reward involved. I just think that it takes away from the game because guys focus too much on trying to manipulate officials to gain an advantage and its becoming too much about who can act instead of guys trying to play basketball. The NBA has arguably the greatest collection of pure athleticism in the world, you cant tell me that these guys are plausibly falling over and getting knocked down as much as they are without flopping. I just think it has gotten a bit out of control.

I get where you are coming from on everything, and I understand that flopping is a big part of the game. I’m not trying to change your mind, I’m just giving my opinion, so lets agree to disagree 🙂

Is that it is not called consistently… There are the times when a big man flops to get a (correct) charge call which would not have been called otherwise and then there is what lebron did this weekend which is a superstar flailing around to get a call which a rookie or role player would never get in 1000 years. Basically, flopping is especially distasteful because it is evidence of preferential treatment by the refs… Which should not be happening…

for flopping in a basketball game………i don’t care what any of you say you can’t justify it.  It’s a direct manipulation of the refs and a mockery of the integrity of the game.  if you get hit you get a call if you don’t you don’t.  Who wants to pay to see grown men fall to the floor like a little girl when he should be playing some solid defense.

The best player in the game flopping is so f*cking sad to me….so sad.  Vlade Divac is sitting back somewhere applauding these flops.

That’d be a good stat to keep. Call it FAG: Flop Attempts/Game

I think the Heat would be leading the league in FAGs.

Lebron may be one of the best to play the game but he also gets superstar treatment from the refs where if he misses an open layup, most likely he’ll go to the free throw line. Flopping only adds to that. He might as well just start slapping his own wrist when he shoots to see if he can draw a few more calls.

An easy solution to keep people from flopping all the time is to just let them play on even if a player hits the deck… I feel like for some reason everyone and the refs especially have gotten into their heads that a foul ought to be called whenever a player falls down or even looks like they were bumped… It just doesn’t need to be called… I know in pickup games the game never stops if you fall over or lose your balance, and you just get laughed at if you try to take a charge (who does that anyway..) why couldn’t these type of rules be brought into college and the NBA… A little more common sense in calling fouls would make the game more a lot more enjoyable for everyone… Honestly I think the flopping is more dangerous than actually playing hard defense too. I was driving to the rim this year, elevated and a guy slid right in front of me to take a charge. I nearly killed him and myself and he got the call even though it was clear he was making absolutely no attempt to go for the ball. That’s not defense and it shouldn’t be part of basketball…. Now the play acting of pretending to take elbows and everything has grown pathetic too.. In almost every case not involving Metta World Peace it’s incidental contact anyway, so rub some dirt in it and call your mother if you want someone to cry to… A look at the changes in soccer has made to prevent flopping could be helpful…
