The NBA today has been dominated by guards… Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant, Rajon Rondo and the others have made great stride in today’s generation. What about the big men? In the 90’s, the crop seemed plenty… Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Dikembe Mutombo and Shaquille O’Neal are among the fruitful big men during that era… But what about today? I can only name two big men that seem to impose their name on the NBA map today… Dwight Howard and Andrew Bynum… They are the two most dominating bigs in the game today… This is where I realized how much Yao Ming is missed. The guy from China simply had skills of a basketball player that Dwight and Bynum never had during their early careers. The agility, the offensive prowess, the ability to play in and out, you can never find that in today’s game…

Sure, athleticism-wise, guys like DeAndre Jordan and JaVale McGee might have the edge over Yao but they’re nowhere near the skills Yao had. It’s sad to see Yao Ming’s career cut short over 9 seasons after suffering numerous injuries in the latter stage but I also think he made the right choice… Will we ever see a Yao Ming type of player in the future? I certainly hope so… Like the saying goes, you’ll never realize the importance of someone until he/she is gone, and on Yao’s standpoint, I miss watching him play basketball…

Can’t agree with you more, I only started watching in the 2003 season, and the first game I watched was the first matchup between Shaq and Yao. Watching those two go at it, especcially Shaq, they both quickly became my favorite players, and the reason I love the game as much as I do. I never got to see the Hakeem-young Shaq-Ewing-Robinson era, but I was fortunate enough to see Timmy, Dirk, KG, and Amare in their prime, and even Shaq for several of his prime years. But those other guys weren’t the power big men that the 90s had. As great as Dwight is, he’s not the dominating offensive force that the greats were. That’s why I’m so high on Cousins to become that guy that puts up 26 and 12.

It drives me crazy to see guys like JaVale McGee and DeAndre Jordan who are so offensively iliterate that it took Jordan 3 and a half damn years to make a shot outside of the paint. It frustrates me how they can’t learn a single post move. I believe that guys like those two should study a guy like Tyson Chandler and do the little things he does to help his team. Chandler might not be the most advanced offensive low post player, but he is always at the right place at the right time, and sets some of the best screeens I’ve seen, and always rolls and dives hard to the basket.

Yao was a great ambassador for the game and brought the NBA a whole new audience in China, it was a great shame that his career was cut short with what where not major injuries but maybe due his his size and wear and tear.

When Houston came up with that 24mpg plan for him in 2010, we could perhaps see the writing on the wall. Hopefully his injuries will not affect his quality of life going forward as he looks for his next challenge.

The 90’s were loaded with great big man, but the game isn’t THAT bad right now in regards to big men.

Dwight Howard, Andrew Bynum, Marc Gasol, DeMarcus Cousins, Al Jefferson, Greg Monroe, Roy Hibbert, Brook Lopez (has to get healthy), Andrew Bogut (if he can get healthy)…
