Ive noticed that along with brutal player FG percentages, that overall scoring has been rather low this year… a few notes

    1) There are currently 5 teams averaging 100+ PPG. Last year, we had 11… In 2009-2010 we had 18. 08-09 had 13, 07-08 had 13… i think the lockout has dramatically affected this.

    2) 4 teams are shooting over 40% from downtown… we had 0 last year. I think players have detracted from penetration in exchange for stepping out behind the 3 point line. why? i have no idea. ray allen is shooting lights out however!

    3) This year we have 10 teams shooting 45% or better…. last year we had 22! 22!!

    4) The Clippers were 2nd in the NBA in turnovers per game last year at only 13 per game… This year, they are 29th averaging almost 17 per.

    5) We currently have 33 players shooting 50% or better. Last year, we had 34. This statistic is almost identical.

    6) We have 11 averaging 20+ ppg… Last year we had 19… In 08-09 we had 20.

    7) John Wall, Deron Williams, Ray Felton, Jamal Crawford, Stephen Jackson, Toney Douglas, Danny Granger are ALL shooting below 36% from the field

    8) Brandon Jennings, Derrick Rose, Kobe Bryant, Monta Ellis, Danilo Galinari, Stephen Jackson, Luol Deng, Jason Richardson are ALL shooting below 30% from the 3pt line.

    9) LeBron is 3rd in the NBA in FG% at 60.1, he trails only Gortat and Hawes

    10) The only non PF/C in the top 20 for fg% are Mario Chalmers, Ray Alen and Bron

    11) Kevin Love has 8 double-doubles in 8 games

    12) Rondo is the only player with a triple double so far

    13) Deron Williams is leading the league in TPG and TP48 at 4.4 and 6.1 respectively… DeMarcus Cousins is the only non pg/sg in the bottom 10 for turnovers per game

There were only 6 teams that shot over 45% last lockout. Albeit this was before zone defense was instituted I believe, but the previous season the league average was 45% (In the 1999 lockout, it was 43.7%. Definitely makes a difference when you add up the amount of shots a team takes). Next season, went back to 44.9%.

Usually teams play around 7-8 pre-season games, so in this condensed season, teams are just starting to hit that mark or surpass it. Plus, it usually takes time for teams to gel even as the season begins. I expect this season to be sloppy and filled with injuries, not really to surprised that it has been up to this point.

At the very least, teams seem to be shooting better than they did in 1999 (44.1% average), not to mention averaging 3 more points per game (94.6 ppg now, 91.6 ppg than). I think some players are off to great starts, some are off to poor starts, but things will balance out as the season progresses. I doubt that shooting % comes close to the 45.9% mark it did last season, but I have a feeling players will not be incredibly off their career percentage averages one way or the other.

    Statistically speaking,

there shouldn’t be any evidence for "a decrease" in scoring after only ~1/9th of the season. yeah, it’s looking that way, but it could just be a statistical anomaly at this point.

Your point is still interesting though.

Here is an interesting stat, there are currently 14 qualified players shooting 50% or greater from behind the 3 point line and 37 shooting 40% or greater from beyond the 3 point line.

Those numbers are really high, even if it is only on during a 7-9 game span.
