Cowboys basketball coach Travis Ford received everyone’s attention last week when he took to Twitter to announce: “Be alert next week for exciting nonconference schedule information and possible roster addition early next week. Have a great weekend.”

The potential roster addition could be a big addition, as in 7-foot, 235-pound Marek Soucek of the Czech Republic.

A big man with skills – perimeter shooting and passing included – Soucek had been linked with Maryland, Washington, Seton Hall, Providence, Gonzaga and Utah State. Yet growing speculation suggests he could end up at OSU, where his name is listed in the student directory as already enrolled.

Of course, Soucek could be enrolled at other schools as well.

A source confirmed Sunday that Soucek hasn’t left the Czech Republic yet, still needing to finish documentation.

Soucek could be a key late recruiting get, with the Cowboys currently showing just three players 6-8 or taller on the roster, and that includes still-suspended forward Darrell Williams.

At the very least, seems intriguing. I would still be more excited for the addition of LeBryan Nash, but having a 7 footer that can step out is not the worst thing in the world. Take it from someone who loves a team that has had 7 footers who could not shoot outside of 8 feet (and even than, it would make you wince), having a guy that can usually means some good things once in a while. Ian Crosswhite was a 7 footer we had, who stroked treys at a plus 50% rate his freshman year. He would travel any time he had the ball inside the three point line, but he also won us a few games with some stellar performances (had 27 against UCLA as a freshman, shut down Amit Tamir at Mac Court).

Does not seem Soucek has been added to the Oklahoma State roster as of today:

Philip Jurick, a former Tennessee signee out of HS, should be an interesting addition as well. Guy was a 2nd Team NJCAA All-American, averaging almost a triple double per game with 10.5 ppg, 12.6 rpg and a modest 9.5 blocks per game. At 6’11 and 270 pounds, the guy at the very least should be a solid 5 fouls and a huge cog in the middle of the zone on D.

Well this is good news. I’m so ready for my alma mater to be relevant again. They haven’t done much since making their sixth Final Four in 2004. The Byron Eaton era was a joke. Eddie Sutton resigned because of an alcohol problem, and then his son Sean took over and then resigned because of a drug problem. They had the #1 recruiting class coming into the 2005 season, but that horribly horribly fell apart. Gerald Green opted for the NBA; Keith Brumbaugh left school before playing a game; Kenny Cooper, Torre Johnson, and Roderick Flemings transferred after their first year; JamesOn Curry left for the NBA after his sophomore year; Terrel Harris was a bit of a disappointment; Gary Flowers got into trouble and never made it on the court; and Byron Eaton was a fat point guard.

The James Anderson era was fun but the Cowboys didn’t make too much noise. Last year’s point guard Ray Penn got into some trouble and transferred.

Here’s who will get the bulk of minutes this upcoming season:

    Guards:

Keiton Page – a small senior sharpshooter

    C.J. Guerrero – pg / Rivals #71 recruit in the nation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAS_E6lonZw

Jean-Paul Olukemi – an all-around talented player with good size who showed flashes last season

    Forwards:

LeBryan Nash – we all know / hopefully he lives up to the hype

Mike Cobbins – a redshirt freshman PF / Rivals #40 recruit last year

Darrell Williams – hopefully he’ll get cleared to play / a beast

    Center:

    Philip Jurick – unknown

They definitely need Soucek or they will be screwed. They have NO depth and NO size. Nash better be amazing or this will be a long season in Stillwater.

Well, I do not think anyone is predicting Oklahoma State to make it to the Final Four, but they more than likely will be a decent team. It is not like Texas has any reliable size, and outside of Baylor and Kansas, I do not think any team has a LeBryan Nash in the Big 12 (10, whatever. I am including A&M and Khris Middleton when I say this). The guy is a tank, I think he is more than likely a one and done and should have a very productive freshman year. Throw in the fact that they return two very solid guards and actually will apparently have a 6’11 dude, depth or not, they should be competing in that conference.

Every team could use a 7 footer, but to say a team "needs" a 7 footer, well, that is just being greedy. Oregon had two guys AT 6’8 last year, one who was hurt for more than half of the season (and limited when he actually was playing) and one who was more slated to play on the perimeter. We had a 6’6 PF and a 6’5 2/3 who had to play a lot of 4. Depth otherwise? Incredibly slim. What happened? We won the CBI. Now, I am not saying that is what every school aspires to, but certainly, we did not have a LeBryan Nash and did not have a 6’11 JUCO transfer who averaged almost double digit blocks. My guess is that while Oklahoma State may be a bubble team, you will survive either way. Just be happy with what you have, because it could be much worse and your team could be in the bottom 10 in the NCAA in average height. Which, I am guessing they are not.

I see what you’re saying, but let’s say Williams isn’t cleared (it seems about a 50/50 chance). That leaves you with literally only two big men on the entire roster if they don’t get Soucek, and neither of them (Cobbins and Jurick) have played a minute in an NCAA basketball game.

Jurick has been mention in a few Juco posts around here.

That 9.5 bpg is pretty amazing and i really want to see if that kind of D transfers to D1 ball

Thinking back the "listed in the student directory" thing can still mean nothing. If i remember correctlly Deandre Daniels(now of Uconn) was listed in Ku’s earlier in the summer whan he was still undecided

The title of this post had me scared.  I’m an Illinois fan and when you said ‘OSU’ I thought you meant Ohio State.  They are going to have a tough enough team as it is, I couldn’t imagine them getting another player to hurt us this season.  But as for Oklahoma State, it’s good for them.  This could be what they need to boost their confidence and help them win some more games this year.

I guess I did leave out that our team did indeed have a 6’10 player. His name was Martin Seiferth, and he was a last second player we got from Germany. Yes, I was fairly excited to add his "size" to the team. Well, homeboy played 12 games at a whopping 4.3 minutes per game. He weighed 7 pounds (though was listed at 223) and (thankfully) transferred from our school to free up a scholarship to someone who could maybe actually contribute.

Now, I know you look at this guys highlight video and see a decent 7 footer, but I think there is very little that says he will make much more of an impact than Jurick. I mean, do not get me wrong, he appears to be 7 feet and can shoot some, but he is also a tooth pick with seemingly little post game. Not to mention, he is 21 years old, which leads to the question, what year would he be exactly? The last statistics I see on Soucek are these whopping numbers from the U-20 tourney last year:

    http://www.fiba.com/pages/eng/fa/player/p/pid/57970/sid/6624/tid/2612/_/2009_U20_European_Championship_Men_DIVISION_B/index.html

Yep, 3.3 and 1.4. Sweet. Well, I do know that these were from a year ago, and his age more than likely would be some indication that he is maybe more physically mature than the average player coming into college, but if Jurick has not proven anything, I think this guy has proven possibly even less. Yes, getting a 7 foot European sounds sweet for most teams lacking size, but I do not know if he will be a team saving player. He could be, but at further examination, looks slightly improbable.

On the other hand, I just posted a link in the news section about Olexiy Len. He is a 7 foot Ukrainian player who is actually the age of an average freshman going into college. Last year, he averaged 16 and 11.4 in the Euro U-18’s. Yes, not U-20, but as you see from Soucek’s stats, he was not exactly tearing things up back than either. Have to say, looks like Len at the very least is much further along than Soucek at the same stage, and probably a better get.

Looking even further, we could also scout the case of big man Kyryl Natyazkho. He is every bit of 6’10 (might be taller) and 265, not a bad athlete either. He averaged 17.2 and 8.4 in those same U-20 games that featured Soucek. Know Kyryl? He was the guy with curly hair sitting on the bench while Derrick Williams was killing Duke. Yes, big Kyryl plays at Zona, will be a junior. He averaged 1.9 ppg and 2.2 rpg in 9.5 minutes per game. He was a nice player for Zona, but not exactly a giant difference maker. He might have a nice season coming up with more PT, but I think you should temper your expectations on Soucek. Sorry man, but while I really hope you land him, I am not thinking he will be a huge sigh of relief as far as depth. Just a hunch.

OK State has A BUNCH of offensive firepower this year. They are always fun to watch because Travis Ford plays a wide-open style thats predicated on running and shooting, and they have all the pieces to do just that.

Page is a jump shooter who will be able to get free this year because he’s not going to be playing much PG next year. He struggled last year, he’s small (5’9 165) but he’s not a PG. He struggles with ball-handling and breaking down the D although he has a little wiggle to him. He has a lightning fast release and NBA+ range, so I expect a good Sr. year from him.

Olukemi is a matchup nightmare as a combo forward. He has a strong mid-range game, and he has the quickness to beat PF’s off the bounce., along with the strength and shooting to play SF. He should see an increase in production.

Nash is a big talent with a nice shot and good athleticism. He looks like a physically gifted NBA SF already (6’7 235) and his offensive skill-set is big time. He will play some SG-PF probably, and he could pace the team in scoring immediately. He’s a likely 1 and done. He has lotto pick-type tools.

Cezar Guerrero is a 5’11 speed demon at PG. He’s flashy, quick, and he has a nice jumper to keep the D honest off the bounce. He will be ideal to push tempo for the team with Ray Penn out of the picture. He’s a similar player to Denis Clemente to give an idea of how he plays.

Phil Jurick is a big-bodied JUCO recruit who will provide a big body more than anything. He can finish around the rim with basic shots, he’s going to factor. He will have to adjust on D though, he might be foul prone. Depends alot on if Coach Ford plays zone.

Markel Brown is a developing scorer too. He should be better as a Soph.

If Darrell Williams beats the rape case, and this Soucek guy can stretch the D forreal, they could be Sweet 16 good.
