Real Madrid forward Nikola Mirotic, chosen as the 2010-11 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Rising Star, made history at the European under-20 Championships in Bilbao, Spain.

Mirotic, chosen as the tournament’s MVP, led the Spanish national team to the gold medal and broke the competition’s scoring record, averaging 27 points and 10 rebounds in 9 games.

He led Spain with 29 points and 11 rebounds to an 82-70 win against Italy in the title game on Sunday. Mirotic had done even better – 37 points, 8 rebounds – in the semifinals against Russia and helped Spain to finish the tournament unbeaten.

He did it really efficiently, 63% from inside the arc, 40% from 3pt and 85% from the FT line, will be very interesting to see how he develops this year with Real Madrid.

Glad to see he’s playing well. I’m a Bulls fan and a lot of people were pissed when they heard his name called. Everyone kept talking about how the Bulls needed other things, but I saw him as a great upside pick, especially for a guy picked that late in the 1st. I’m not going to jump all over this performance and get excited because it’s still a long ways from NBA talent, but don’t be surprised if he ends up being one of the top 5 players in his draft class. Anyone that has seen footage of him can tell he is very versatile and moves well for a guy his size. His numbers in the tournament reflect the same and show that he’s doing it at a very efficient rate. Above all else, he’s leading his team to wins and winning big games.
