PulseGlazerParticipantFor those who think Rubio, Irving, Knight, Kemba and Jimmer will be busts:Panned out: Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Rey Felton, Mike Conley, Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, DJ Augustin, Brandon Jennings, Stephen Curry, John WallBusts: Acie Law, Johnny FlynnUnsure Yet: Ricky Rubio, Jerryd Bayless…There are still plenty of busts in the draft, but the odds of a consensus 1st round PG are excellent. I mean, even the bust, Johnny Flynn, showed promise last year despite being in a terrible system, while Bayless has full-time starter potential judging how he ended the year. Some of these guys it took a year or three, but the busts seem, at this point, far more likely at the big (Udoh, Thabeet, Aldrich, Jordan Hill, Jason Thompson, etc.) or wing (Turner perhaps, Foye, Terrence Williams, Joe Alexander) positions. The lesson? We know what we’re evaluating far more now with 1’s than the rest of the court. They have the ball in their hands, so the skills are easy to evaluate, even with the differences in the college and foreign games. There’s a lot more projection involved elsewhere, especially with bigs, though at least big stiffs seem to be out of fashion. However, if you’re drafting early, a PG seems the safest position, followed, strangely, by 4’s who produced in college. While one of the above list (in the topic) may be busts, scouting on 1’s has been so good that it’s highly unlikely more than one is.0 - Posted on: Fri, 06/17/2011 - 4:38am #546143
Cardinal_FanParticipantI still have yet 2 label Flynn a bust. Imo he is just not a good fit for the triangle, if he were to get on a team that plays a style that better fits his game such as Houston or Sacramento i think he could still be a solid nba point guard. Nothing spectacular but solid. As for Jerryd Bayless i dont think he has ever really got a fair shot. In portland they were ready to win now so they couldnt really afford for him to have growing pains in the ultra competitive western conference. But u cant tell me that this kid isn’t better then Calderon??? Toronto should play him and draft a center such as Vessely or Kanter if they are avalible and continue building.

PulseGlazerParticipantFlynn is thus far a bust. I don’t expect him to remain there, but to this point, since he has zero trade value apparently, that’s where he remains. He will be good, just like, apparently, everyone on the list but Acie Law. Teams have gotten quite good at drafting 1’s.

TallmanNYCParticipantThe question mark for Rubio is his shooting. He will probably have the worst shooting percentage in the league if he comes over this year and gets serious play time. That isn’t the end of the world since he will probably also put up good assists, steals and rebounds on a per-minute basis. Rubio will be very interesting because of the wild differences in his abilities. Jimmer also is a big risk reward player I think. If he can be an elite 3 point shooter in the NBA, I think he becomes a real starter. I know people talk about defense being a real issue, but there are lots of teams who play guards who aren’t that hard to guard.

Andrew1984ParticipantPulse,
Good post. I agree with your point about the lead guard position being easier to evaluate because we see more of it. I don’t think Rubio fits into that category though, because we haven’t seen much of him, and what little we have seen only shows that he can’t score at all.
If there’s one player I’m absolutely positive will be excellent not only as a rookie, but for his career, it would be Jimmer Fredette. He will be successful, period. No question about it. Does that mean All-Star, ROY, perennial 25-a-gamer? No. But absolutely, undoubtedly successful NBA player. Period.
Irving’s best-case scenario is Chris Paul/Zeke Thomas, and worst-case scenario is DJ Augustin.
Kemba’s best-case scenario is Tim Hardaway and worst-case scenario is Bobby Jackson.
Point being, even their worst-case scenarios are solid NBA contributors, not busts.

PulseGlazerParticipantAndrew – We haven’t seen enough of Rubio, sure, but NBA scouts? The guy’s been a top prospect since he was 16.

PulseGlazerParticipantAugustine is a solid-good starting 1. That’s what was expected, generally, unless I’m misremembering. And I didn’t even count all the awesome non-lotto 1s.
